Empyrean Arts instructor Maddy Battles invites our LGBTQIA+ friends and their friends to an evening of aerial fundamentals and playtime jam. Expect light instruction & guided exploration of the aerial arts. Open to all queer, trans, & non-binary humans ages 14+ as well as 1 friend. Attendees under the age of 18 must be dropped off by a legal guardian for their first visit to the studio. The Paper Crowns are taking honest music from the roots of the American musical bloodline and are bringing it into the here and now. Their chemistry has been compared to June and Johnny. Their intimacy has drawn parallels to The Civil Wars. Their hard won stories in their lyrics have won over personal friends and fans of Shovels and Rope. Their musical intensity and soul has earned them comparisons to Tedeschi Trucks. They are earning their reputation as the genuine article and as a band on the cutting edge of the modern roots music movement.
Their musical chemistry is a gumbo of Appalachian folk and bluegrass, Dixieland melodies, delta blues, acid rock, murder ballads, outlaw country and Southern Gospel that they cook up into a sound that they call mojo roots music. The Paper Crowns’ Nicole and Spiro pair their tight vocal harmonies with tasty musicianship and instrumentation sounding big like a four piece band yet always honors their intimacy and rawness as a duo. They have played at events such as Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, Summer Meltdown, Baja Bash, The House of Blues and more. Their music has found placement in major network TV campaigns including the Olympic Games and for Visa.

The Red Hot Sugar Babies perform sassy jazz and sultry blues of the roaring 20’s-30’s including Vintage Jazz, Blues, Swing, Ragtime, Dixieland, New Orleans. Influenced by Ethel Waters, Fats Waller, Louis Armstrong, Bessie Smith, Jelly Roll Morton they play a mix of the pop music that created the first dance craze to sweep the nation. Band members Joanne Domka (trumpet), Lois Jolly (trombone), Wendi Loomis (vocals), Mario Piccolo (guitar), Dan Patrella (plectrum banjo), Laurie Fisher (bass) bring alive music that makes you swing and tap your toes. Come dance The Charleston and revisit the era of flappers, speakeasies, rumble seats, and bathtub gin.

Multi-instrumentalist, producer, and vocalist, Astoria sculpts sonics with both organic and synthetic sounds, birthing experimental pieces that bridge genres. The Asheville based artist explores trip hop, soul, sky wave, hip hop, pop, folk and ambient, and the project is always evolving to reflect new influences. Astoria has a voice and lyricism that evoke ethereal, colorful, and mystical worlds, while gracefully shifting into phonetic flows that have blunt, earthy, and soulful qualities as well. Their exploration of sonic arrangements creates distinct and enticing atmospheres, ranging from bright and vibrant to dark and bewitching.
Astoria’s passion and intention is to use sound to explore the subtle layers of our inner and outer experiences. To utilize music as an alchemical process that may help us discover more about ourselves through it’s unbridled expression, fascination, and experimentation.

Adding a Southeast destination for designer toy makers and collectors, *Assembly Required brings designer, bootleg and art toy artists from around the country, to present and sell their work.
Asheville’s premiere designer toy expo, *Assembly Required, is presented by Unboxing Asheville, Morgan’s Comic’s, 103.3 Asheville FM and Appalachian Pinball Museum. Focusing on this artistic movement, designer toys are a form of lowbrow pop art. These toy makers pull inspiration from a variety of subversive segments of culture, as well as subcultural elements, including (but not limited to) comics, tattooing, street art, and everything related to toys of the 60’s through the 80’s.
Echoing production methods of traditional toy manufacturers, designer toys are usually intended to be displayed as collectibles, rather than to be played with. Toy makers mediums range from resin to vinyl, from plastic to plush; with molding, and production techniques such as kitbash, sofubi and bootleg (recently coined ‘Artisanal Action Figure’, by New York Times writer, Rich Juzwiak [11/23/18]). Juzwiak interviews such artists as the Sucklord and Killer Bootlegs, both of whom will be present at *Assembly Required.
Blue Ridge Taekwondo is opening a martial arts studio in Black Mountain (right beside the Tractor Supply) to serve Black Mountain, Swannanoa, and Old Fort residents ages 4 and up. Are you up for the challenge? Six Hours on the Ridge is back for its third year! This race features the 6 mile JFA trail with just over 800 feet of elevation gain and fast rolling single track it is the perfect setting for this endurance event.
We will have individual categories – adult (17 and up) male and female and youth (16 and under) male and female as well as team categories. Teams will be made up of two people and categories will be as follows – male, female and co-ed.
Prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers in each category. Riders will be scored on laps completed; most laps wins. Teams may ride at the same time to accumulate more laps. Get registered today for this great race!
