Flood Gallery Fine Art Center

DeWayne Barton (BLove) and Saige Hipkins to exhibit at the Flood Gallery in Black Mountain, Oct. 27th

The Flood Gallery Fine Art Center and Courtyard Gallery are pleased to announce the opening exhibitions of Asheville artist DeWayne Barton (BLove) and Black Mountain Artist, Saige Hopkins at 850 Blue Ridge Rd in Black Mountain on October 27th from 6pm to 9pm. Saige Hopkins will be exhibiting in the main gallery while DeWayne’s exhibition is the grand opening of the new Gateway Center next door to the main gallery. Both exhibits will be opened simultaneously from 6pm to 9pm with food and live music provided by Tom Johanson.

DeWayne “B-Love” Barton
Show title:
“Ancestors in the Garden” — Repurposed Sculptures —
Helping fund Hood Huggers International

DeWayne Barton, affectionately dubbed “B-Love”, repurposes found objects and trash to create three dimensional sculptures, to inspire people to become heroes and to come up with solutions to social and environmental problems. He has been an effective social and environmental artist, poet, teacher, and activist. Originally from the Burton Street Community of Asheville, NC, Barton grew up in the Southeast side of Washington, D.C., then served four years in the Navy, stationed out of Norfolk, VA, after which he returned to Burton Street. Since then, he has been actively engaged in his community focusing on environmental issues and social justice. He co-founded the Burton Street Community Peace Garden, Green Opportunities, and is a board member of the Blue Ridge Sustainability Institute.

His new exhibit, Ancestors in the Garden, includes a large six foot statue titled, “Why Vote?” It is inspired by presidential elections that ignores and undercounts black American votes. Now expanded to include rusted chains, a wireframe man and headshots of former presidents, it is mounted on a trailer for exhibit at the Flood Gallery, and was displayed at the Smithsonian in 2005. His artwork has been shown in several galleries and museums, including the Smithsonian Institute, the August Wilson Center for African American Culture, Duke University, and his poetry has been read at the Library of Congress. Barton recently founded Hood Hugger International that serves to build greater communication, connection and wealth in systemically marginalized neighborhoods in the Appalachian region through the arts, environment, and social enterprise. Driven by his love of people and this planet, B-Love uses art to encourage us to heal each other, and then focus on healing the planet.

Saige Hopkins
Show title:
“hunky-shanky-piddygutt” — prints & journals —
whimsical woodland characters

Saige Hopkins is exhibiting a collection of monoprints inspired by science, daydream, drama, and Western North Carolina folklore, resulting in whimsical characters she interacts with in the woods of NC. Included in the exhibit is Hopkins’ first hand-bound book, “Searching for Hill Rubies”, a compilation of excerpts from her mother’s journal as well as her own writing, plus a series of journal entries written by a ghost, chronicling her experiences with regaining consciousness through interacting with her environment. Saige Hopkins grew up nearby in the woods of Gerton, NC. Hopkins recently graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from The Cooper Union in New York City, where she loved absorbing all that she could of the city’s own form of wildness. However, even amidst all the excitement, she never stopped feeling the tug of the mountains. This show is her first independent exhibition in a gallery. Saige is now intentionally living near her childhood home and working to foster its unique spirit; beautiful, bizarre, and inclusive.

Both exhibits open Oct 27th at the Flood Gallery Fine Art Center at 850 Blue Ridge Rd, in Black Mountain, NC and close on December 8th. All exhibits and events at the Flood Fine Art Center are free and open to the public.
