Isis Music Hall kicks off the summer season with free outdoor concerts in West Asheville every Wednesday and Thursday evenings.
Concerts on the Isis Music Hall lawn bring the community center stage for evenings filled with free music and fun festivities throughout the summer from 6 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
“It’s just going to be a great vibe for the community and welcoming for our visitors,”” said Lillianna Woody, Isis Music Hall owner. “It’s the perfect way to unwind from the day full of responsibilities and just have fun.”
From bluegrass to blues, jazz and a few surprises in between, the summer series brings an array of local acts to the stage to satisfy nearly any song-filled soul.
“It’s really refreshing for me as a musician to be able to play in a family-friendly environment,” said breakout artist Whitney Moore, of Queen Bee & The Honeylovers. “I love the laid back community vibe of it and that people can stroll down Haywood and just happen by some great live music. It’s also early in the evening which gives families a great opportunity to see live music.”
Cold brews, food, wine and cocktails are available for purchase. Come, kick off your heels and relax on the patio or spread out a blanket and hang out on the lawn to enjoy free music for the evening.
No reservations needed, just stop by and enjoy! Weather permitting, of course. Alcohol is permitted on the lawn, but must be purchased from Isis Music Hall.
Check their website at isiaasheville.com for a full schedule.

Two renowned radical justice organizers discuss learnings and challenges for successful movement-building in an era of ascendant white supremacy.
Together, Mandy Carter and Matt Meyer are co-editors, with Elizabeth “Betita” Martinez, of “We Have Not Been Moved: Resisting Racism and Militarism in 21st Century America” (PM Press, 2013), an essential text for organizers committed to the intersections of resisting structural racism and war/imperialism. Matt has also written and edited several other books that appear on the bookshelves at Firestorm, most recently “White Lives Matter Most: And Other ‘Little’ White Lies” (October 2018, with foreword by Sonia Sanchez) and “Look for Me in the Whirlwind: From the Panther 21 to 21st Century Revolutions” (2017).
On this N.C. speaking tour, Mandy and Matt seek to engage deeply with intergenerational audiences about strategic organizing and intersectional movement-building in this current sociopolitical moment, drawing on historic lessons from such diverse figures Bayard Rustin, Black & Puerto Rican political prisoners, the Black Manifesto movement for reparations, and much more.
Mandy Carter is a Durham-based Black queer activist who co-founded Southerners On New Ground and the National Black Justice Coalition. She works in the Carolinas and nationwide for racial, gender, and LGBTQ justice. Matt Meyer is a white Brooklyn-based writer, educator, and activist who currently serves as chair of the International Peace Research Association, and co-chair of the Fellowship of Reconciliation’s National Council.

How do we speak of place? Are lineage and place geographical, cultural, emotional, and spiritual? Alicia Jo Rabins and Kevin Coval are privy to the traditions, rituals, and struggles of being Jewish Americans. Rabins is a writer, musician, composer, performer, and Torah teacher. Her work explores the intersection of ancient wisdom texts with everyday life. Coval is a poet and community builder. As the artistic director of Young Chicago Authors, founder of Louder Than A Bomb, and professor at the University of Illinois-Chicago—where he teaches hip-hop aesthetics—he’s mentored thousands of young writers, artists, and musicians. These poets stem from very different literary traditions, but both have so much to contribute about lineage and place and how they write about it.
The Poetic Conversations series is an opportunity for the community to witness powerful poetry through readings, conversations, and talkbacks with esteemed poets. Moderated by the Peace Center’s award-winning Poet-in-Residence, Glenis Redmond, Poetic Conversations welcome literary giants to the stage and embrace topics that reflect the diversity of our communities. Events are FREE of charge, reaching a broad audience brought together through the power of the written and spoken word.
Poetic Conversations may contain mature language and content.

Charlie Parr
Easily confused and very shy, Charlie Parr has been traveling around performing his Resonator-fueled folk songs ever since leaving Austin, Minnesota in the 1980s in search of Spider John
Koerner–whom he found about 100 miles north at the Viking Bar. The experience changed his life, made him more or less unemployable, and transformed him into the force of nature known to fans today. Those who have been following Charlie Parr through his escapades of nonstop touring already know that the Duluth-based songwriter has a way of carving a path straight to the gut. On his newest record, Dog, he digs deeper and hits those nerves quicker than ever before. In quieter moments, Parr confronts hard issues head-on, using only an acoustic guitar or banjo to light the way, then ramps up to raucous, punk-tinged soundscapes that make you want
to howl at the moon.
Phil Cook
Phil Cook is an accomplished multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, and producer based in Durham, North Carolina. He has composed music for Bon Iver, Kanye West, The Blind Boys of Alabama, and Hiss Golden Messenger, among others, as well as contributed to studio recordings for Bruce Hornsby, Amy Ray (The Indigo Girls), The Mountain Goats, Kathleen Edwards, Matthew E White and more. A founding member of Megafaun and The Shouting Matches (with Justin Vernon), he currently makes records and tours under his own name. His most recent album, “People Are My Drug”, was release in 2018 via Thirty Tigers/Psychic Hotline.

Mary Ocher returns to the US with two drummers! Fresh off the recording of a new album and touring over 20 countries with the much celebrated “The West Against The People” and its companion release “Faust Studio Sessions and Other Recordings”. Mary Ocher + Your Government will be hitting the East Coast, Midwest, parts of Canada and The South with a spectacular blend of audio-visual components, synthesizers and heaps of percussion.
Mary has been persistently creating passionate, uncompromising work, raw, thought provoking, socially and creatively pushing against the current, dealing with subjects of authority, identity and conflict. Her work is as enchanting as it is polarizing, ranging from traditional folk to raw 60s garage, ambient with ethereal vocals and abstract synths, to experimental pop with African and South American rhythms.
“The West Against The People” was released on Hans Joachim Irmler’s label Klangbad (of Krautrock pioneers Faust). It features collaborations with elusive legends Die Tödliche Doris and Felix Kubin and an essay elaborating on the themes of the album and analyzing the current sociopolitical climate*. Her previous solo release was produced by Canadian Psych Rock&Roll guru King Khan.

Bank Of Christ
Haphazardly Channeling the sonic and vivacious creativity of the early electronic, musique concrete pioneers Pierre Schaeffer, Delia Derbyshire, Else Marie Pade as well as later artistic instigators Faust, Nurse with wound, Einstürzende Neubauten and Toto Coelo with unbraided punk rock breaha.
Bank of Christ is a unique amalgam whom started their journey in Oakland Ca. In 2006 w Priyadarsini Ray, Robert Price ( Kreamy ‘Lectric Santa, Monostadt 3) and Marlon Kassberg (Liquorball).
Seeing the release of several now long out of print and heavily sought after cassettes on Serbian label “No basement is deep enough”. Robert and Priya unanimously decided to move to Asheville Nc in 2010. They then worked with Tashi Dorji under the revised moniker 2nd Bank of Christ
a few years later joined with Ben Asbury(Axxa Abraxas) and Matthew Marx (Sinnersoid) as the all new 3rd Bank of Christ.
Here returning to their original glory Bank of Christ is joined by acclaimed virtuoso, experimental jazz guitarist Mr. Andrew Burns (Mouth-breathers) on effected electric piano and guitar.
“Boc” Now with a revised love for interfacing more melodic, almost poplike intervention into their references and somewhat organically generated experiments, are currently working on a video, seeking lucrative empowerment (work?) and misappropriately utilizing thousands of dollars in gear for the cerebral expectancy of others. This will be their 1st and perhaps last appearance for many many years.
Come early-stay late.
