Sunset Hike
May 14 @ 6:30 pm – 10:00 pm
Blue Ridge Hiking Company

Enjoy our beautiful mountain sunsets on a guided hike!

Cost:
$100/person. Price includes transportation from downtown Asheville, snacks, and a headlamp for you to use during the hike. Each trip will run if there are a minimum of 2 participants signed up

Sign-Up Details:
In order to sign up for this trip, please go to our Day Hikes calendar and select the trip date. You will find the trip listed there.

Itinerary:
You will meet your guide at our downtown location (70 College St, Asheville, NC 28801). Hike start time depends on sunset time.

You will fill out a waiver and health form, then travel in our company vehicle to the hike location. The hike is approximately 1.5 miles round trip, and is strenuous, with a very rocky section toward the top. We’ll hike up to a western-facing viewpoint, where we’ll take a break, grab a snack, and (hopefully!) catch a great sunset! After sunset, we’ll hike back to the trailhead and drive back to Asheville. This hike will begin in daylight and end in the dark. It is ideal for guests who have some hiking experience or who are physically fit.

This trip’s itinerary may change if we are expecting rain. Remember, we do not control the weather, so we cannot guarantee that we’ll have a great sunset!

Cancellation Policy:
Payment in full is required to register, which includes a 15% non-refundable administrative fee. Refunds (minus the 15%) can be issued until one week prior to departure date. Until one week prior to departure, you may transfer your registration to a different date for full credit.

Within one week, a refund will be issued only if Blue Ridge Hiking Company cancels the hike due to severe weather. Remember, we hike rain or shine!

What to Bring:
Please wear comfortable shoes and clothing, and bring a rain jacket and an extra layer for warmth. We recommend each guest brings at least 1 liter of water. You are responsible for any medications or personal items needed during the hike.

Your guide will provide snacks and a headlamp for you to use during the hike.

If your guide does an exceptional job, please show your appreciation with a tip.

Bardic Alchemy at Triskelion
May 14 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Triskelion Brewing Company

We’ve been talking to the folks from Bardic Alchemy, a Celtic Rock band from Asheville and they’ve agreed to play at Triskelion as many Tuesdays as they can come down to the Brewery.

Bardic Alchemy is a brand new element in the Celtic Rock world. This trio, based in the mountains of Asheville, North Carolina is comprised of multi-instrumentalist Connell Sanderson, guitarist Nick Marcone and percussionist and vocalist Tyler Watts.

Bardic Alchemy is best described as a psychedelic trip into a musical world that is heavily inspired by the Celtic musical traditions…run through various effects pedals. Everything from soothing, mellifluously reverberating whistle melodies supported by groovy guitar lines and thumping djembe beats to high energy dance tunes on the Scottish and Irish pipes to three part vocal harmonies and even improvised pieces, Bardic Alchemy is a surprisingly dynamic and unpredictable musical journey.

So… Tuesdays… will now be…

MUSIC
The Low-Down Sires have been busy reviving rare early 20th century jazz classics for the past five years, and are known and respected widely as true traditionalists. Consistently hailed as one of the most popular dance bands in the region, the Sires have had the pleasure of performing at events all over the eastern US, in addition to their regular circuit of local swing dances, club appearances, and private parties. Dedicated to the lost sounds of the earliest roots of jazz, and inspired by the compositions and arrangements of King Oliver, Kid Ory, Jelly Roll Morton and other giants from the storied origins of the art form, their authentic sound transports listeners to the streets of Old New Orleans and the barrelhouses of early 20th century Mississippi river towns. Their hot swingin’ style is a surefire hit with audiences everywhere, from concert halls, bars and back-porches, to swing dances and street corners.

BLUES
Band finished and you’re not done dancing? You’re in luck… stick around for our blues after party! Continue dancing to DJ’d music until the bar kicks us out. $2 suggested donation for those coming just in time for the blues.

FOOD: Feeling peckish? The bar has a small selection of vegan goodies to help keep your stamina up! Ask a bartender for more details. Buncombe Botanicals and Sowing Ceeds will also be out their with their rotating selection of freshly made, allergy friendly, plant medicine infused goodies including banana based “Nicecream”, baked goods, and savory bites!

CLASSES
7pm: Solo Jazz & Charleston w/ Jean

It’s not as scary as it looks! The Charleston, a dance that came out of the Gullah communities in Charleston, SC and traveled north with the Jenkins Orphanage marching band, is the original American dance that predates lindy hop and other forms of swing. It’s intimidating to a lot of dancers, but don’t worry! This class will be a fun, high-energy way to learn a bunch of solo jazz steps and help build your confidence on the dance floor. We’re going to start at the bottom and work our way up, so you don’t need any Charleston experience, just be willing to play around and have a good time.

“Continuing” classes are for those dancers who have cemented the basics of the dance being featured that specific month. This includes knowing (and being able to execute cleanly and consistently) basic footwork and lead/follow skills for that dance. Some continuing classes may require no advance knowledge of a dance. This will be noted in the the class description.
*******************

8 pm: Beginning 8-Count Lindy Hop w/ Sparrow & Keith

Come find out what this dance is all about! Originating in Harlem in the 1920’s, the Lindy Hop has been bringing joy worldwide ever since. We will start from the top, getting comfortable with the rhythms, steps, and patterns that are the building blocks of this style, practicing first on our own and then with a partner. We will get the basics ingrained, and also learn a fun turn or variation each week to spice it up. No partner necessary, we will rotate partners throughout the class.

“Core” lessons stress the fundamentals of swing dancing for beginning dancers. Lessons rotate monthly to focus on a different kind of swing dance (6 Count Lindy, 8 Count Lindy, Charleston, Balboa, etc.). Because good fundamentals are hard to develop in one month, we recommend repeating Core lessons (on the same topic) to help develop the solid foundation you’ll need in continuing classes. Core lessons are also great for intermediate and advanced dancers who want to “get back to basics” or learn a different dancing role (lead vs. follow).

GIFT CERTIFICATES

Dressing for the Occasion: a New Temporary Exhibit
May 15 @ 9:00 am – May 16 @ 5:00 am
Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site

A new temporary exhibit titled “Dressing for the Occasion: Mid-Century Sandburg as Celebrity and Family Man” opens on May 13, 2019. The exhibit, which runs through October, is part of the Sandburg Home tour and features clothing and accessories from both the park’s permanent collection and loaned items from the Sandburg family.

“Dressing for the Occasion” offers visitors a window into the style, culture, and feel of mid-century America. The family’s clothing and accessories weave together the roles of Carl Sandburg as a prominent writer, celebrity, father, and husband. This temporary exhibit offers an exciting opportunity for the public to view objects that are normally in storage or in the possession of Sandburg family members. Tours of the Sandburg Home are offered daily from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. Tickets are available first come, first served, each day from the visitor information area in the ground level of the Sandburg Home.

Nearly every room in the historically furnished house museum will be included in the exhibit. Visitors will see the characteristic scarves Carl Sandburg wore as he played his guitar and sang folk songs to entertain his family and guests, the dress Lilian Sandburg wore to meet President Lyndon B. Johnson, and many other mid-century pieces worn by the Sandburgs and their daughters. Historic photographs, paired with the clothing, will provide context.

“The VA2K Walk & Roll is one of the ways we encourage our staff to adopt healthy lifestyles. In addition, it’s also a great way for them to help homeless Veterans,” said Steph Young, Charles George VAMC Medical Center Director.

Community groups who are interested in participating in the event should contact the local VA2K coordinator, Lauren Zaloshinsky at (828) 575-4542 or via email at [email protected].
