What is a Clean Up Day? How do you participate? Is this a family-friendly event? How long is the clean up? What is for breakfast? Should you bring anything? What happens at the end?

Read on for answers to these questions below.

What is a Haywood Road Clean Up Day?
A morning where volunteers work to pick up trash and recycling along the Haywood Road corridor with the support of Asheville GreenWorks. We alternate between the east end and west end of the road. (Clean Up Days this year are on March 31, June 1, September 7, and November 2, 2019.)

How do you participate?

1-RSVP, especially if you are bringing multiple people with you
2-Show up at 10am at Westville Pub
3-Eat some breakfast
4-Gear up with gloves, safety vest, bags, and tools
5-Head out to pick up trash and recycling along the corridor and side streets
6-Finish at ALL SEVENS BREWING (Westville Pub) to return gloves, vests, tools and pick up your ice cream coupon or free beer (21 and up)!

Is this a family-friendly event?
Yes, although not recommended for very small children. Haywood Road is a busy street and it is important that you and your children stay alert and safe throughout the clean up. An adult signature on the Asheville GreenWorks waiver form is required.

How long is the clean up?
Generally volunteers are out about 1.5 hours, so you should expect to finish up about noon.

What is for breakfast?
Westville Pub, Sunny Point Café, and Biscuit Head are donating delicious breakfast items for volunteers including scrambled eggs, potatoes, breakfast meats and veggie options, biscuits, juice, and coffee. WABA will also be proving fresh fruit.

Should you bring anything?
Asheville GreenWorks will supply gloves (adult size), safety vests, and trash bags for everyone. They’ll also have a limited supply of tools. Madden’s Ace Hardware has donated 10 trash grabbers to WABA, so those along with some brooms will be available.

If you have your own grabber, a flat-headed shovel, or industrial broom, we recommend you bring it.

What happens at the end?
Finish up back at Westville Pub and return items you borrowed from Asheville GreenWorks, or WABA to receive a coupon good for a scoop of ice cream at The Hop West or a beer (21 and up) from ALL SEVENS BREWING!

We look forward to seeing you! Remember to RSVP by clicking through on the ticket link.

Your support of the businesses that support these clean up days is greatly appreciated.

Free Tool Sharpening Event
Jun 1 @ 11:00 am – 3:00 pm
Asheville Tool Library

Free Tool Sharpening Event! There will be library volunteers on site waiting to sharpen your dull tools.

You can bring your pocket knives, kitchen knives, axes, pruning shears, lawnmower blades or any other dull tools with a straight edge and they’ll be ready to send you home with sharp, and therefore safer, tools.

While we’re confident we’ll be able to sharpen most tools that people bring in, we do reserve to right to turn away any tools they feel cannot be safely or properly sharpened. For example, serrated blades are difficult to sharpen. Also, if the waiting lines are long, we may not be able to sharpen time-consuming items like chainsaw chains or carbide circular saw blades.

Oteen Baptist Church

We will have BBQ PLATES, RAFFLE TICKETS AND CAKES FOR SALE. AT 6 PM WE WILL HAVE A GOSPEL MUSIC CONCERT FEATURING 13 YEAR OLD FIDDLE EXTRAORDINAIR, MACKENZIE BELL ( Kentucky) , NEXT CHAPTER from Lumberton, FAITH WALKERS 4 (Asheville NC), JAYDEEN GEORGEFF (Hendersonville NC) and THE WARDS. MUSIC STARTS AT 6 PM. PLATES AVAILABLE AT 4 PM. Bruce has had kidney failure for 3 yrs. now. He was diagnosed 2 days after their 3rd anniversary. He had to have lung surgery a month ago on Valentine’s day because the lining of his left lung kept filling up with fluid & he’d have to have 2 liters of fluid drained every wk. That’s not counting fluid retention in the rest of his body from kidney failure. Because of all that fluid his lung couldn’t expand. When he got all the fluid off the 4th time they discovered on x ray that the bottom of his lung had atrophied & had a tennis ball size growth. He had surgery to expand his lung & biopsy of the growth. He also had a $5,000 PET scan that Medicare won’t pay for. They both confirmed that it is Mesothelioma. Theywere told 2 days after their6th anniversary. This is a rare & aggressive cancer that maybe 1% of patients live through. Because of being on dialysis he has to go to Mission Hospital & the closest lung surgeon is Asheville which is 105 mi. from where we live. We have an older vehicle over 200,000 mi. & have had to travel to Asheville @ least once a wk. We are going to need tires soon, we have filled the oil & radiator twice in 6 wks. Not to mention the increasing gas prices. We are responsible for 20% of all medical bills. Last yr. our 20% was over 18,000 that doesn’t include dialysis treatment 3 times a wk. I forgot to mention that in between all this his 5th fistula (port for dialysis) clotted & is no longer working so he had to have tubes put in his chest for the 3rd time. Bruce is 5’8 & weighs only 134 lbs now. Bruce is a fighter & a miracle a few times. We aren’t giving up. We are humble people & have always helped others. We volunteered with a pregnancy crisis center & with recovering addicts to help get back on their feet & stay clean. We have a 2007 vehicle & have downsized from a condo to 500 square. ft. rental. We appreciate anything & everything especially prayers. Thank you & God bless you.
