Wicked

So much happened before Dorothy dropped in.

Wicked, Greenville’s most ‘popular’ musical, looks at what happened in the Land of Oz…but from a different angle. Long before Dorothy arrives, there is another young woman, born with emerald-green skin — smart, fiery, misunderstood, and possessing an extraordinary talent. When she meets a bubbly blonde who is exceptionally popular, their initial rivalry turns into the unlikeliest of friendships…until the world decides to call one “good,” and the other one “wicked.”

From the first electrifying note to the final breathtaking moment, Wicked — the untold true story of the Witches of Oz — transfixes audiences with its wildly inventive story that USA Today cheers is “a complete triumph! An original musical that will make you laugh, cry, and think.”

“She Kills Monsters: Virtual Realms” Theatre
Nov 5 @ 7:30 pm
Online

This online theatrical experience is an adaptation of the original script that allows the production to take place on Zoom. Nguyen, a screenwriter and co-founder of the Vampire Cowboys Theatre Company of New York City, saw a need for theatre in the time of quarantine and re-wrote the play to accommodate social distancing.
The plot centers around the character of Agnes Evans, an average girl, whose life takes an unexpected turn when her Dungeons and Dragons-loving younger sister Tilly tragically dies in a car accident. When Agnes finds Tilly’s Dungeons and Dragons notebook, she sets out on an adventure she never saw coming.

The cast includes returning performers Olly Taylor and Adrian Gonzalez taking on the role
of Chuck Biggs; theatre major Remy Fifield and Hendersonville High School student
Ashlie Hanke playing Tilly; and theatre major Sarah Freeman and IC Imagine student
Jayna Gerber portraying Agnes. Other appearances include local homeschooler Mary
Treadway as Demon Queen Lilith Morningstar; Blue Ridge theatre majors Logan Justice
and Colton Putnam as Orcus; and even some remote Iowan performers Bri Stoever and
Alex Foote as Kaliope Darkwalker.
The tech team includes stage manager Chloe Hallman; assistant stage manager Alex
Farrell; production designer Courtney Creasman; Zoom liaison Aidoneus Walton; and
director Jennifer Treadway.

Keith’s Corner at Brevard Music Center: Debussy’s “La Cathédrale Engloutie
Nov 6 all-day
Online

I’ve been involved with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution for the last five years. My wife, Emiley, followed her passion for the sea and originally joined the organization as a volunteer, and followed that by accepting a position in WHOI’s administration. She is currently the Deputy General Counsel, and participates in policy and planning for all facets of the organization, which is involved in cutting-edge ocean research all over the world.

When they asked me to perform at their virtual gala in October. I chose Debussy’s piano prelude “La Cathédrale Engloutie,” a piece I have always loved but never gotten around to learning. Debussy’s gorgeous work, which dates from 1910, is a quintessential example of his impressionist style. Its veiled musical imagery paints the subtle play of wind, water, and light. Its program tells of an old Breton legend, about a magical cathedral that rises, on certain crystal-clear mornings, from the watery depths. One hears music that depicts dawn on the ocean, muted sounds of monk’s chanting, bells pealing and the cathedral organ in its full glory as the edifice breaks the surface of the water, and then the long, slow diminuendo as the mystical cathedral returns to the depths.

I chose this piece for them because, at its core, the story it tells is one of humanity’s age-old fascination with what lies below the surface of our oceans. Woods Hole is dedicated to just that knowledge. For more information on this extraordinary institution, please visit whoi.edu.
