The Haen Gallery, located in downtown Asheville, North Carolina, is proud to present their 12th Annual Lynn Boggess Exhibition. The exhibit will run through November.
Lynn Boggess is one of the most unique and noteworthy American landscape painters of the 21st Century. He resides in West Virginia, a state whose diverse mountains, forests, and rivers provide abundant inspiration for the artist’s plein air paintings. In place of brushes he uses palette knives and trowels to thickly layer the broad sweeping strokes and exquisite fine detail that capture all the colors of the seasons in rushing rivers, snow covered hillsides, and thick forest vegetation. Mr. Boggess’ work is recognized internationally for its incredible three-dimensional texture, rendered solely in oils. These remarkable paintings combine elements of Abstract Expressionism and Photorealism to create a style that is totally unique and original.
The Haen Gallery in Asheville is located at 52 Biltmore Avenue between City Bakery and Chestnut. There is a parking garage at the Aloft hotel across the street, another garage just up the hill, as well as street parking.
The gallery is open Monday through Saturday 11am-6pm & Sunday 12-5pm. For more information: 828-254-8577 or www.thehaengallery.com. Gallery contacts: Chris Foley, Director; Leslie Logemann, Gallery Manager.
With locations in Asheville and Brevard, The Haen Gallery offers the work of established artists whose distinctive and unique style sets it apart from ordinary and imitative efforts. Visit the website at thehaengallery.com.

“Metamorphoses” condenses Ovid’s epic and selects the most powerful myths to illustrate the theme of change. The gods, though “not altogether unkind,” exert their influence on the mortal world by dramatically interfering with the lives of humans.
From Midas to Orpheus, and from Alcyone to Baucis, mortals undergo various metamorphoses, or physical changes, which reflect their internal traits. Hubris is punished, while charity and love are rewarded. To stress the timeless nature of these myths, some take place in antiquity, while others have anachronistic references to better tie their stories to today. These myths, however, offer more than just simple morals like the importance of humility and piety. “Metamorphoses” also shows why myths themselves retain importance and relevance.
Performed by students ages 13-17 in our Tanglewood Youth Theatre Production Class.
Geek. Poser. Jock. Beauty Queen. Wannabe. These are the labels that can last a lifetime. With an unforgettable rock score from Tony Award-winning composer, Jason Robert Brown, (Parade, The Last Five Years, Bridges of Madison County) 13 is a musical about fitting in – and standing out!
Evan Goldman is plucked from his fast-paced, preteen New York City life and plopped into a sleepy Indiana town following his parents divorce. Surrounded by an array of simpleminded middle school students, he needs to establish his place in the popularity pecking order. Can he situate himself on a comfortable link of the food chain… or will he dangle at the end with the outcasts?!?

Award winning New York City director and actor Reginald Wilson will be the guest director of “Dearly Departed,” the next play presented by Mars Hill University’s theatre arts department. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday through Saturday, November 15-17, 2018, with a 2:30 p.m. matinee on Sunday, November 18. The production will feature director talkbacks after each performance; an opening night reception before the production on Thursday, November 15; and a diversity improv workshop at 12 p.m. on Sunday, November 18. Extra events are included with ticket purchases for that day’s performance.
Dearly Departed, written by David Bottrell and Jessie Jones, is a fast moving play that takes place in the backwoods of the Bible Belt. The beleaguered Turpin family proves that living and dying in the South are seldom tidy and always hilarious. Despite their earnest efforts to pull themselves together for their father’s funeral, the Turpins’ other problems keep overshadowing the solemn occasion. Amidst the chaos, the Turpins turn for comfort to their friends and neighbors, an eccentric community of misfits who just manage to pull together and help each other through their hours of need, and finally, the funeral.
Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students with student identification, free for Mars Hill University students and staff. For more information, contact the Owen Theatre box office at (828) 689-1389.

On a hot August night, an inebriated Jimmy Wharton stumbles into in his backyard to converse one last time with the larger-than-life father he laid to rest earlier that day. As he works his way through their often fraught relationship, Jimmy ends up face-to-face with his own shortcomings in this colorful, comedic and poignant play written by award winning North Carolina playwright, Tom Huey. Dorrance Dance is an award-winning dance company that aims to honor and expand America’s original art form: tap dance. The company’s inaugural performance garnered a Bessie Award for “blasting open our notions of tap.” Founder Michelle Dorrance was awarded a 2018 Doris Duke Artist Award and has been called “one of the most imaginative tap choreographers working today” (The New Yorker).
The program includes the new and exhilarating Myelination (2017), the rarely seen, Bessie Award-winning Three to One (2011), and the whimsical Jungle Blues (2012).
“[An] effervescent, twitchy piece… [Myelination] showcases a bit of everything: from graceful, gliding swoops to one-armed balances that pull hip-hop back to tap… Throughout, Dorrance, a brilliant conductor, pushes the boundaries of tap while exposing its true nature: that it is music.” (The New York Times)
Three to One: “An odd, seemingly impossible marriage of tap and modern dance that came off edgy, seductive, and smart.” (Chicago Tribune)
“Jungle Blues unleashed undulating torsos, rolling hips, and shimmying shoulders. Knees and feet swiveled side to side like well-oiled levers, and dancers slid across the floor and balanced on toes.” (The Boston Globe)

The jack-of-all trades, Bert, introduces us to England in 1910 and the troubled Banks family. Young Jane and Michael have sent many a nanny packing before Mary Poppins arrives on their doorstep. Using a combination of magic and common sense, she must teach the family members how to value each other again. Mary Poppins takes the children on many magical and memorable adventures, but Jane and Michael aren’t the only ones upon whom she has a profound effect. Even grown-ups can learn a lesson or two from the nanny who advises that “Anything can happen if you let it.”

Alceste is an iconoclastic rock purist. He has declared that he is sick of hypocrisy and will tell everyone exactly how he feels. Simultaneously, he is romantically involved with Cecelia, a break-out pop star who is shallow, venal, and not the most faithful lover. In order to prove his devotion to truth, Alceste tells would-be rapper Lil’ Tastee that he has no talent, only to discover that the fickle Cecelia might be carrying on with Lil’ Tastee behind his back.
Playwrights Andrew Gall and Megan Powell originally created this adaptation of Molière’s The Misanthrope for the Wing & Groove Theatre Company in Chicago. This production will be its North Carolina premiere.
