12th Annual Lynn Boggess Exhibition At The Haen Gallery
Nov 1 @ 12:00 pm – 6:00 pm
The Haen Gallery

The Haen Gallery, located in downtown Asheville, North Carolina, is proud to present their 12th Annual Lynn Boggess Exhibition. The exhibit will run through November.

Lynn Boggess is one of the most unique and noteworthy American landscape painters of the 21st Century. He resides in West Virginia, a state whose diverse mountains, forests, and rivers provide abundant inspiration for the artist’s plein air paintings. In place of brushes he uses palette knives and trowels to thickly layer the broad sweeping strokes and exquisite fine detail that capture all the colors of the seasons in rushing rivers, snow covered hillsides, and thick forest vegetation. Mr. Boggess’ work is recognized internationally for its incredible three-dimensional texture, rendered solely in oils. These remarkable paintings combine elements of Abstract Expressionism and Photorealism to create a style that is totally unique and original.

The Haen Gallery in Asheville is located at 52 Biltmore Avenue between City Bakery and Chestnut. There is a parking garage at the Aloft hotel across the street, another garage just up the hill, as well as street parking.

The gallery is open Monday through Saturday 11am-6pm & Sunday 12-5pm. For more information: 828-254-8577 or www.thehaengallery.com. Gallery contacts: Chris Foley, Director; Leslie Logemann, Gallery Manager.

With locations in Asheville and Brevard, The Haen Gallery offers the work of established artists whose distinctive and unique style sets it apart from ordinary and imitative efforts. Visit the website at thehaengallery.com.

Save Our Old Growth Rally & Protest
Nov 1 @ 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm

The Chattooga Conservancy is calling for the public to attend an important meeting about the Southside Project, and to participate in a PROTEST RALLY at 12 NOON, to demand that their voices be heard. This is an “objection resolution” meeting hosted by the US Forest Service. It will take place on Thursday, November 1st from 8:00am to 12:00pm, at the National Forests NC Supervisor’s Office, 160 Zillicoa St., Asheville, NC 28801.

Though the Forest Service received over 200 comments on the Southside Project, just 30 organizations and individuals will be recognized at the conflict resolution meeting. It is a public meeting and other members of the public are allowed to attend, but WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO SPEAK. The public owns our national forests! Citizens should be allowed to have their voices heard at this important meeting! The 12 noon protest rally will provide a forum for those who would like to speak in protest of the Southside Project, and to ask that—as the owners of our national forests—their voices be heard. Take a stand for the land, and for some of the last old growth in the Chattooga headwaters!

Historic Arts & Crafts Destination - Tours

Visitors to Grovewood Village will have the opportunity to learn the story of Biltmore Industries on a guided history tour, offered Wednesday – Saturday at 1pm during April – November. The tour includes a visit to Biltmore Industries’ production facility (aka Dye House), where guests can peek into the past and view the original looms, carding machines, spinning mule and dye vats used to make the famed Biltmore Handwoven Homespun.

The tours last approximately 45 minutes and operate on a first-come, first-served basis, open to 25 people. There is no charge to take the tour, but donations are appreciated. Tours begin at the Homespun Museum in Grovewood Village, where a docent will give a detailed overview of Biltmore Industries’ historic importance before leading guests into the 100-year-old Dye House (usually closed to the public).

Private group tours are also offered for a fee and should be scheduled at least one week in advance.

Powerful Tools for Caregivers
Nov 1 @ 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm
The Shift Studio

Registration Required.
Powerful Tools for Caregivers is a class series designed to
help family caregivers take better care of themselves
while caring for a family member or friend.

In the six weekly classes, caregivers develop a wealth of self-care tools to: reduce personal stress; change negative self-talk; communicate their needs to family members and healthcare or service providers; communicate more effectively in
challenging situations; recognize the messages in their emotions, deal with difficult feelings; and make tough caregiving decisions.

Class participants also receive a copy of The Caregiver Helpbook, developed specifically for the class.
Week 1 – Taking Care of You
Week 2 – Identifying and Reducing Personal Stress
Week 3 – Communicating Feelings, Needs and Concerns
Week 4 – Communicating in Challenging Situations
Week 5 – Learning from our Emotions
Week 6 – Mastering Caregiving Decisions

As the series progresses, the six classes build on each other.

CLASS #1: TAKING CARE OF YOU
This class sets the stage for the entire course. It emphasizes that the focus is on “YOU, the caregiver, not on the family member receiving care,” and that caregivers will develop a “box of self-care tools.” The challenges of caregiving and significance of caregiver self-care are dramatized through a video. Beginning in this class, caregivers make a weekly action plan for self-care.

CLASS #2: IDENTIFYING AND REDUCING PERSONAL STRESS
Four steps are presented for effective stress management: (1) Identifying early warning signs, (2) Identifying personal sources of stress, (3) Changing what you can change and accepting what you cannot change, and (4) Taking action. Tools to reduce stress are discussed. Participants learn how to change negative self-talk – which increases stress and erodes confidence – to positive self-talk. Beginning in this class, caregivers learn five relaxation activities that are easy to incorporate into their daily lives.

CLASS #3: COMMUNICATING FEELINGS, NEEDS, AND CONCERNS
Participants learn how to communicate their feelings, needs and concerns more effectively by using “I” messages. Through brief dramatizations, participants experience the impact of both “I” messages and “You” messages (which tend to sound blaming and put people on the defensive). They practice changing “You” messages to “I” messages, and identifying when statements beginning with the word “I” are actually “Hidden You” messages.

CLASS #4: COMMUNICATING IN CHALLENGING SITUATIONS
Participants practice two communication tools – assertiveness and Aikido – which are helpful in difficult situations. They learn a four-step process, called DESC (Describe, Express, Specify, and Consequence) for using the assertive style of communication. With Aikido, participants learn how to align and find “common ground” with a person who is distressed. A segment highlights guidelines for communicating with a person who is memory impaired.

CLASS #5: LEARNING FROM OUR EMOTIONS
The overriding theme of this class is “our emotions are messages we need to listen to.” It emphasizes that feelings occur for a reason and that feelings are neither good nor bad. Focus is on identifying constructive ways for dealing with difficult feelings – especially anger, guilt, and depression – and resources for professional help.

CLASS #6: MASTERING CAREGIVING DECISIONS
Focus is on the internal emotional process caregivers go through when they experience a life change. Tools for dealing with changes and for making tough decisions – including a decision-making model and the family meeting – are discussed.

Mid-Century Sustainable Design
Nov 1 @ 5:00 pm – 7:30 pm
The Collider

“Not-So-Utopian Futures: Solar & Climate Architecture of the 1950s”.

What can we learn from cutting edge, sustainable mid-century modern architecture? On Thursday evening, November 1, AIA Asheville and CASE, present a lecture, “Not-So-Utopian Futures: Solar & Climate Architecture of the 1950s”. Networking and refreshments 5:00pm, lecture to begin at 6:00pm.

The lecture, by Daniel A. Barber, will discuss how solar house heating methods and techniques of climatic design were essential aspects of the global architectural discussion in the period surrounding World War II. These “techno-cultural” developments produced novel designs that emphasized the role of architecture as a practice to present new ideas to connect the built environment with the natural environment.

“The Not-So-Utopian” future was imagined as a way to transform social relationships. Black Mountain College here in Western North Carolina was a hub of such imagination, where architects like Buckminister Fuller taught and experimented with new and novel designs.

Daniel A. Barber is an Associate Professor of Architecture and Chair of the Graduate Group in Architecture at PennDesign. He is an architectural historian studying the relationship between the design field and the emergence of global environmental culture across the 20th century.

This event is free to the public and will also include a reception with refreshments, including local beer and food. The talk is part of a larger program, “Building Science Meets Climate Science”. Reception: Fragments

Milliken Art Gallery at Converse College

Zane Logan’s photography ‘Fragments’ will run from November 1-25, 2018. Logan will present a gallery talk on November 1st at 6:00pm at Milliken Art Gallery, followed by a reception from 6:30-8:00pm. This event is free and open to the public.

Zane Logan’s photography showcases an honest account of his time spent with a parent who is no longer able to care for themselves. The photographs are cathartic and allowed for “breaks” from the confinement Logan’s mother’s small living space, providing a catalyst for alone time. Over time, the images have become metaphors that both reflect the mood of each day and serve as a keepsake of their time together.
