Live Music by Back South
Feb 15 @ 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Mad Co. Brew House

BACK SOUTH is a trio from Asheville North Carolina. The bands sound is derived from the use of different homemade instruments with a focus on the cigar box guitar fashioned in the style of North Mississippi Diddley Bow. Back South bridges many southern music styles ranging from Bluegrass and Old Time with hints of Spiritual Gospel on the beat of Rock and Blues. The music is easy to move to, fun and up beat along with the attitude of the band being warm and light-hearted which creates a very welcoming atmosphere. The members of Back South are Todd Cecil: cigar box guitar/bass and songwriter – a Nashville music-scene transplant, Mike Fore: Harmonica – an uprooted Louisiana via Columbia SC transplant and Scott Harte: Drums, Washboard and Spoons – an Up-North Down-South transplant. Together the three make a monstrous sound and an entertaining mixture of music styles on the backbone of a driven Blues Rock.

Wine & Crafts: Suminagashi Paper Marbling w/ Ayako Abe-Miller
Feb 15 @ 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Tryon Arts and Crafts School

Join us for 2019’s first Wine & Crafts Workshop!

Suminagashi is a very fun and meditative way of marbling paper (making marble-like designs on paper) using an ancient Japanese technique and Sumi-Ink. Drop-by-drop different colors of the special Sumi-Ink is floated on the surface of a water basin. The ink spreads over the surface of the water like oil in concentric but random forms. A piece of paper is lowered carefully into the basin picking up the floating Sumi-Ink design. For many centuries, the Japanese have used Suminagashi to make decorative paper for their scrolls (Makimono), books and stationary. In this workshop, we will create beautiful designs on paper that can be used as stationary, envelopes or be mounted as works of art themselves. The process is fascinating to everyone from the creative type to the engineer, and anyone can do it, so everyone can produce beautiful art in a Zen-like, stress-free environment.

Don’t Miss The Asheville Designer Toy Expo
Asheville’s Designer Toy Expo is February 16 and 17 at Highland Brewing Company in Asheville. Adding a Southeast destination for designer toy makers and collectors, *Assembly Required brings designer, bootleg and art toy artists from around the country to present and sell their work. Asheville’s premiere designer toy expo, *Assembly Required, is presented by ZaPow, Unboxing Asheville, Morgan’s Comic’s, 103.3 Asheville FM and Appalachian Pinball Museum.

Focusing on this artistic movement, designer toys are a form of lowbrow pop art. These toy makers pull inspiration from a variety of subversive segments of culture, as well as subcultural elements, including (but not limited to) comics, tattooing, street art, and everything related to toys of the 60’s through the 80’s. Echoing production methods of traditional toy manufacturers, designer toys are usually intended to be displayed as collectibles, rather than to be played with. Toy makers mediums range from resin to vinyl, from plastic to plush; with molding, and production techniques such as kitbash, sofubi and bootleg (recently coined ‘Artisanal Action Figure’, by New York Times writer, Rich Juzwiak [11/23/18]).
