Raffle: Trip to London or Cash Asheville Community Theatre
Jun 7 – Jun 6 all-day
Asheville Community Theatre

Tickets on sale through June 28, 2020

We know how completely odd it seems to be raffling off a trip to London right now. We’re barely leaving our homes for any reason, so jetting off around the world seems flat out bonkers! We’re hopeful that international travel and fun vacations will happen again in the future – and that’s why we extended and amended the raffle prize! If you win, you can choose the trip to London (and you have 18 months to book your travel) OR you can choose to take the cash value of the trip instead ($10,000).

Our raffles have been important fundraisers for ACT over the years, and this one is no different. ACT has lost 85% of our income as an organization, so this raffle is one of the few ways we can continue to bring a little money in the door.

Buying a raffle ticket is a great way to support ACT right now – and it just might be you who gets some really great news from us!

Summer Reading Program 2020: Imagine Your Story
Jun 7 all-day
Online

Libraries are currently closed to the public but your local librarians are working hard to provide resources and programs to keep you entertained from home.

Check out the BCPL Summer Reading Program website for virtual programs, activities you can do from home, links to get you started with e-books, e-audiobooks, and more. Be sure to keep checking back throughout the summer. We are coming up with new ideas every day!

We would love to see what you are up to this summer. Tell us about the books you’ve been reading or share pictures of the projects and activities you are doing from home! Tag Buncombe libraries on Facebook or Instagram using our hashtag #yourstorymatters. You can also email photos and stories to [email protected]. We miss you and look forward to seeing your faces and hearing your stories when we reopen. In the meantime, be safe, be kind, and keep reading!

Successful Planting Strategies for Native Perennials and Shrubs
Jun 7 @ 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm
Botanical Gardens at Asheville

BGA BUTLER ROOM

Bad luck with rhododendron or some other native plant? Natives present us with a lovely palette of plants that bring beauty and much-needed ecosystem services to our gardens. But, just like humans, native plants enjoy a range of environments and thrive when they are planted in conditions that are well-suited to their nature. In this talk we’ll guide you through best planting practices for a variety of native shrubs and perennials. In addition, we will discuss the growth habits of some favorite natives, what to consider before siting a plant, and designing gardens that showcase the beauty of natives. We will leave time for questions and discussion at the end.

Participants must pre-register and pre-pay for classes: 828-252-5190.

Black Mountain Poems: An Anthology by Jonathan C. Creasy
Jun 9 @ 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm
zoom
Black Mountain College had an explosive influence on American poetry, music, art, craft, dance, and thought; it is hard to imagine any other institution that was so utopian, rebellious, and experimental. This anthology begins with the well-known Black Mountain Poets―Charles Olson, Robert Creeley, Robert Duncan, and Denise Levertov―but also includes artist Josef Albers and musician John Cage, as well as the often overlooked women associated with the college, M.C. Richards and Hilda Morley.

Books are available via Malaprop’s for a 10% discount.

This free program will take place virtually via Zoom. Space is limited.

Racism, white privilege

and what it all means

Recognizing and understanding racism, and actively unlearning the everyday, built-in mechanisms of systemic racism is an ongoing effort that must be made by every single one of us. It can be difficult to navigate issues, origins, and solutions surrounding systemic racism, especially with so many different angles portrayed by the media.
There are countless truthful resources to help us find our way to social justice and equity. Here are just a few educational resources and ways to help our Black communities:

Jun 14 @ 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm

BGA BUTLER ROOM

The way humans have treated the earth has resulted in the shocking disappearance of 45% of insect populations in just the past 40 years. This terrifying decline threatens our entire food web and our future as a species. In celebration of National Pollinator Month, insect enthusiast Heather Rayburn of MonarchLover.org will show what gardeners can do to join together as part of a “Victory Garden” style effort to reverse this decline and begin what scientist Doug Tallamy calls the “largest collective conservation effort in history.”

Fairy Trail at Bullington Gardens
Jun 15 @ 9:00 am – 4:00 pm
Bullington Gardens

The Fairy trail is open Monday thru Saturday, 9am-4pm. We encourage all visitors to be patient as there will be limits to the number of people allowed on the trail at the same time. While the trail is outdoors, there are some small spaces and we want to ensure our guests and fairies are safe. Please practice appropriate social distancing and bring a mask in case. Masks are not required, but are considerate in a close area. Our restrooms are not open to the public at this time. Please make arrangements prior to visiting.

Rules of the trail:

Do not move or rearrange fairy displays. The fairies are very fond of their own decorating.

Do not leave trash on the trail. Fairies do not like litter in their town.

Please ensure children and pets are supervised at all times. Dogs and loud noises can scare the fairies into hiding.

Do not disturb wildlife or vegetation. The fairies depend on the vegetation to build their homes.

The trail is one way only. Please stay on the trail at all times.

The Fairies can’t wait to see you all here!

P.S. the Fairies would like us to remind you that we are a non-profit and donations are greatly appreciated. Help us keep the fairies living in the style with which they’ve become accustomed.
