Depending on the season, topics of discussion include wildflowers, plant and tree identification, natural history, and the cultural and land use history of The North Carolina Arboretum. Guides may include areas such as the Natural Garden Trail and Bent Creek.
Programs are held rain or shine and participants should dress appropriately for the weather. Individuals should also wear sturdy shoes and bring water. Walks last 1.5- 2.5 hours, depending upon the interest of the group, and are approximately one to two miles in length. Due to length and content, this program is not recommended for children under 8 years of age.
Walks begin in the Baker Exhibit Center Lobby and space is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Groups of five or more are required to pre-register by calling 828-665-2492. Walks are FREE, however, donations to The North Carolina Arboretum Society are appreciated. Regular parking fees apply. Arboretum Society Members always park free.

Sol Driven Train and Mountain River Guides are excited to present Sol Slam Mountain Jam, a family-friendly camp out music festival on the banks of the Nolichucky River in Erwin, TN, over Labor Day Weekend, August 31-September 2, 2018. Our mission is to be the best “end of summer” music festival in the region while celebrating music and life in an intimate, naturally stunning environment. Ticket quantities will be limited to promote the highest quality event experience.
After seven annual Sol Slam Music Festivals in the midst of the sweltering summer heat at Charleston’s oceanfront music venue The Windjammer, Sol Driven Train is moving the party to the Blue Ridge Mountains of Tennessee. USA Raft is a whitewater outfitter boasting a beautiful tent campground along with cabins nestled in the woods. Daily activities will be offered including hikes, stand up paddle boarding, tubing and caving. Vendors will be on hand selling delicious food and libations. The musical entertainment will include Yarn (Americana), Empire Strikes Brass (horn funk), Jeff Sipe’s Slam Shine (jazz/jam), Josh Roberts And The Hinges (rock n roll), Lovers Leap (progressive bluegrass), two nights of Sol Driven Train (jamericana), as well as a Sol Driven Train kids show and Terraphonics. Expect collaborations and jams from these longtime musical conspirators.
A portion of the proceeds will go towards benefiting the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy. SAHC works to conserve the unique plant and animal habitat, clean water, farmland, scenic beauty, and places for people to enjoy outdoor recreation in the mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee for the benefit of present and future generations. We achieve this by forging and maintaining long-term conservation relationships with private landowners and public agencies, owning and managing land and encouraging healthy local communities. ZSCN is a small group of volunteers dedicated to providing care to special needs and senior animals… and spaying all the cats!

Vaden Landers is a multi-instrumentalist from eastern Tennessee. As a young man he began traveling America’s highways and railroads, studying American folk music styles such as Old-time, Country, Blues, Cajun & Jug. With a voice like a young Hank Williams, and an acute musical attention to detail, he plays with an authenticity that he hopes will spread the knowledge of American culture and music through his own.

Dan Keller trio is an instrumental jazz project comprised of upright bassist Ryan Kijanka, drummer Micah Thomas, and guitarist Dan Keller. They put their own spin on timeless standards and melodies, without losing the grit and authenticity of jazz. Many eras from early swing, latin jazz, bebop, and soul-jazz are represented. They strive to entertain both casual listeners and connoisseurs. This week’s show features special guest violinist Alex Travers.

Adopting Asheville as his home town in 2016, Alex has since been working as a collaborative artist, arranger, performer, teacher, violinist and songwriter. His style permeates into a variety of musical styles and genres. Absorbing every experience like a sponge, he is likely to squeeze the most out of any piece, performance or project he comes across. But when asked what it comes down to, his reply is one simple word: “Honesty”. Having performed on the same venues with such acts as Thor and Friends, Explosions in the Sky, Carly Taich, and many more, his musical influences include Phillip Glass, Charlie Parker, Elliott Smith, the Pixies, Andrew Bird, J.S. Bach, Buckethead, and others. Taking a break from symphony work this year to spend more time in the studio, he is heavily working with artists and musicians as a collaborator in the Asheville area.

The band, led by the world famous Italian mandolin player and scholar Carlo Aonzo, presents a very interesting repertoire of Italian musics, chosen among the evergreens of the Italian national tradition, arranged with the unique personal ‘Carlo Aonzo Trio’ style.
The Trio, featuring Carlo Aonzo on the Italian mandolin, Lorenzo Piccone on the guitar and Luciano Puppo on the double bass, made a real trip around the world musical genres last year with the release of their first album “A Mandolin Journey”. This work celebrates the Mandolin as icon of the Italian culture in the world following its evolution through centuries and continents and was presented during a very intense musical tour through many Italian towns and the United States where it was warmly welcomed by both audience and critics.
The new project focuses now on the roots of the Italian music enriched by the flavor and uniqueness of the Carlo Aonzo Trio sound: swing, jazz, elaborated rhythms strongly influenced by North and South American elements interact here with classical, folk music and movie soundtracks.
The show is completed by stories and anecdotes, introducing the different musical pieces in a very lively and capturing atmosphere.
