We’ve set aside a quiet space for all our aspiring novelists to come work towards their word count goals. So come spend an hour or two with us and get into the creative flow. Refreshments provided
Great news for poets and poetry lovers: Dark City Poet’s Society is returning to the Black Mountain Library. DCPS is a completely free poetry group that is open to poets of all ages and experience levels. Join us at the Black Mountain Library from 6-7:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of every month for our (respectful) critique group. Now, each year on November 1, hundreds of thousands of people around the world begin to write, determined to end the month with 50,000 words of a brand-new novel.

Several branches will be hosting “Write-ins” throughout the month of November, offering quiet spaces for writers to come chip away at their word count. As the holiday season starts with Thanksgiving leading the way, many of us count our blessings for all that we have. During this season of gratitude and giving, we may also consider others who are less resourced. Perhaps we volunteer to serve Thanksgiving turkey at a shelter or take a child’s name from an angel tree to provide holiday gifts.
This forum will expand our minds to consider the 365-days a year reality of racial and economic injustices and inequities. We will be inspired by the soulful lyrics of Kyshona Armstrong and then hear the stories of some of our neighbors navigating our housing, financial and criminal justice systems. These stories will challenge our beliefs about why so many people are financially insecure and inspire us to seek solutions.
Village Engage’s Faith & Justice Forum: Economic Liberation for All is a daylong event designed to inform and connect us with inspired solutions and people working to build a community where everyone can thrive. The symposium includes live entertainment, panel discussions and a networking lunch.

Writer Jasmin Pittman Morrell will host a class on constructing personal narratives November 11 at 10 a.m. in the Laurel Forum in Karpen Hall. Registration is $20 and open to the public. During the class, participants will explore constructing personal narratives, defined as stories about ourselves, the world, and the intersections of the two. By engaging poetry, excerpts of memoir essays, and using a tool called “the ladder of abstraction,” we’ll discuss the value of showing and telling in storytelling – and why we need both to deepen meaning. Making meaning is the purview of storytellers, and when we share our interpretations of events both public and intimate, we have a powerful opportunity to create empathy and shared understanding. There will be time for writing and feedback in this workshop that welcomes you to craft art birthed from your true stories.
Jasmin Pittman Morrell writes about identity, place, and belonging. Her work is most recently featured in “Bigger Than Bravery: Black Resilience and Reclamation in a Time of Pandemic,” as well as “Meeting at the Table: African-American Women Write On Race, Culture and Community”.

Visitor Parking
Visitors may park in faculty/staff and All Permit lots from 5:00 p.m. until 7:30 a.m., Monday through Friday, and on weekends, holidays, and campus breaks. Visitors are not permitted to park in resident student lots at any time.
Prior to 5pm, any visitor (regardless of their reason for visit) need to adhere to the current practices listed on the parking website. Get your visitor parking permit here
TFAC invites all artists: painters, sculptors, writers, performers & more — to a casual weekly drop-in gathering on Saturday mornings at 9 AM to share your works in progress, alert others, and chat about art and what’s happening in your community.
The first weekly Coffee is Saturday, August 20 at 9 am.
No RSVP needed, just drop by!

National Novel Writing Month National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is a fun, empowering approach to creative writing. The challenge: draft an entire novel in just one month. Why do it? For 30 wild, exciting, surprising days, you get to silence your inner critic, let your imagination take over, and just create! We want to help. Come by our library and have a quiet space with other would-be authors to think, plan and perhaps, talk over ideas.
