Early Daoism was essentially a reflective and contemplative practice that aligned the adept to the natural phenomena of the world. Intrinsic in such meditations was the individual’s connection to the forces of nature and their movements. As these vectors of energies became internalized, the Daoist adepts were able to “capture” or “summon” such forces and displace their dynamics into objects — eventually relegating their intentions onto mediums of writing (e.g., silk, bamboo, and paper) that became known as Fu-talismans. This workshop will introduce participants to energetic symbols and the cultivation of drawing upon those symbols into empowered paper.
Please note: Calligraphy supplies are not included in the course fee. Supplies can be purchased on Amazon or at many art supply stores. You will need:
– Calligraphy brush.
– Ink stick (we will not use liquid ink)
– Ink grinding stone
– Calligraphy paper (also called xuan paper or rice paper), approximately 11×17 or 10×18 inch size. You will want something larger than 8 1/2 x 11 paper.
– Newspaper to protect your work surface and cloth rag to clean up any messes

Just like the names of Chinese acupuncture points, there is much richness in the names of herbs used in Chinese medicine. Drawing upon folklore, philosophy, and history, much of the names of the herbs confer the experiential realizations of their “discoverer”, the mundane to the extraordinary revelations exemplified by the plants, and the reverence accorded to their existences in fostering healing and evolution of humanity. Studying herbs can be as entertaining and provocative as poetry. This two-day class explores how some formulas represent the intricate weaving together of each plant like an acupuncture trajectory that offers a pathway to understanding, healing, and liberation.
This class is taught by Master Jeffrey Yuen who is one of the most sought-after teachers of Classical Chinese medicine in the world.

Enjoy a ‘spooky’ twist on our monthly farm tour as we get into the holiday spirit! But don’t let this hike scare you. It will be a moderate 2.5-mile loop across the hills and pastures of the SAHC Community Farm, with plenty of stops along the Discovery Trail to talk about farm production and conservation projects on the property. You’ll learn about our stream restoration efforts, shortleaf pine reforestation project, and more. FREE for SAHC members, $10 for non-members.

Join us for a self-guided tour of artists’ studios in North Asheville’s beautiful Beaverdam Valley
The artists working in Beaverdam Valley—plus guest artists—are excited to welcome visitors to see their work, talk with them, and offer handmade art and craft for sale. Media include ceramics, painting, jewelry, sculpture, textiles, paper art, photography, and more.

All studios are off Beaverdam Road which is off Merrimon Avenue in North Asheville
Twenty-six artists and craftspeople—21 who live in Beaverdam Valley plus 5 invited guest artists—are excited to welcome visitors to view their handmade artwork. Media include ceramics, painting, jewelry, sculpture, book art, textiles, photography, glass, mixed media, and more. Visitors come from Asheville, from over 15 states, and from cities and towns all over North Carolina. What they have in common is an appreciation for art and craft.
This year we have multiple artists in several locations—26 artists in only 17 sites—making this tour easy to see and easy to navigate. We hope you come out and visit all the talented artists. All studios are off Beaverdam Road, reached from Merrimon Avenue in north Asheville. This summer, tour maps will be available online and in our brochure. Visitors can learn more about our two-day, self-directed, geographically convenient tour, and view artists’ work on our website, in our brochure, in print and online advertising, and in articles. A downloadable map is available on the website.
Take a 90-plus minute stroll along 7th Avenue/Historic Depot District, where the action was when the first steam engine locomotives rolled into town starting in 1879 bringing hundreds of tourists. The district surrounding the historic Railroad Depot was where it was happening in the Gilded Age of Hendersonville from 1879, when the first steam locomotive arrived with hundreds of tourists daily, till the Crash of 1929 … learn about the drays, the hustle, the inns, the summer visitors, the shoot-outs, growth of agriculture, and popular candy stores.
