George Trouble, frontman for The Zealots’, just released his first solo album “Plow”. His songwriting weaves unconventional lyrics with a wide palette of classic Americana. His carefully crafted phrases tell stories of cartoon saviors, ditch diggers, and cynical romance. The melodies recall folk-punk, rockabilly, surf and honest country blues. Not to be missed, George Trouble’s live shows are a classic slice of Tar Heel rock ‘n’ roll.

Once you have signed up for the trip, we will be emailing you with a form to fill out which includes a waiver, health form, and information about gear needs and dietary restrictions. We will need to get this form back from you at least 1 week before the trip.
You may also sign up by giving us a call at 828-713-5451. Also feel free to give us a call or email us if you have questions regarding the trip. We can be reached by email at [email protected].
Itinerary:
The hike will meet at our new location in Hot Springs, the “Appalachian Trail-er”. The address is 200 Lance Ave, Hot Springs, NC. Feel free to book accommodation here the night before your trip by giving us a call, or choose somewhere else nearby.
You will park your vehicle in Hot Springs and then take a shuttle around 11am to Davenport Gap (1975′) where you will start your hike. On day 3, your group will hike through and camp in Hot Springs in order to resupply, shower, let go of any unwanted gear and regroup for more trail on day 4 and 5.
We will be ascending and descending over mountains up to 5000′, so daily mileage needs to be considered with an elevation gain and loss of up to 2000-4000′ per day.
Approximate Daily Mileage (guide can always alter to work with group):
Monday: 7.1 miles: Davenport Gap to Snowbird Mountain (4263′)
Tuesday: 9.4 miles: Snowbird to Max Patch campsite (4291′)
Wednesday: 9.1 miles: Max Patch to Bluff Mountain (4686′)
Thursday: 10.7 miles: Bluff Mountain to Hot Springs (1326′)
Friday: 8.3 miles: Hot Springs to Rich Mountain (3543′)
Saturday: 6.5 miles: Rich Mountain to Allen Gap (2246′)
After reaching Allen Gap, a shuttle will pick you up and take you back to your car to finish up the trip. For planning purposes and taking into account the lenght of the trip, you may want to plan for accommodations either in Hot Springs or head towards Asheville prior to returning home; trip typically ends in the early to late afternoon on the last day.
Cancellation Policy:
Payment in full is required to hold your spot with 15% of the total cost non-refundable ($105). Refunds (minus the 15 percent) can be issued up until 2 weeks prior to departure time.
Within 2 weeks, a refund will be issued if Blue Ridge Hiking Company decides to cancel the hike due to severe weather. Remember, we hike rain or shine. :)
What to bring:
Food: BRHC provides all on-trail food for the trip. When your guides arrive, they will pass out your food for the weekend. You will be expected to carry your own individually packaged food (such as oatmeal packets) as well as some shared community items (such as a jar of peanut butter or a block of cheese).
Community Gear: BRHC provides all community gear for the trip, including water filters and back-up chemical treatment, camping stoves and fuel, bowls/spoons/cups, trowels/toilet paper/hand-sanitizer, first aid kit, and map/compass. While we do cater to dietary requests within reason, please keep in mind fresh food options are limited due to trying to keep food lightweight; we are only out for a short time.
Gear Rentals: BRHC offers the following 4 main pieces of gear for rent for no extra cost:
1. Backpacks – We ask for your torso measurements in order to fit the pack appropriately to you; male and female specific packs available.
2. Tents – We have single-person tents and two-person tents. Let us know if you’d like to share with a friend or are willing to share with another hiker. We will do our best to accommodate these requests.
3. Sleeping bags – We strongly encourage you to provide your own sleeping bag if possible, but we do have sleeping bags for rent if necessary.
4. Sleeping pads – These will insulate you from the ground and provide some cushion and comfort.
Personal Items: You are expected to bring your own clothing, personal gear (such as headlamps and water-bottles), medications, and approved optional items. Generally, comfortable walking shoes are better than heavy hiking boots. Please do not pack any cotton – if it gets wet, it does not dry quickly and will not keep you warm. Athletic clothes are a good option. You will need only ONE outfit to hike in and ONE outfit to sleep in, plus a rain coat, and a warm layer. You will NOT need a new set of clean clothes each day. You will NOT need any make-up, hair products, scented products or deodorant. Just a toothbrush! Your guide will teach you how to brush your teeth in the woods and enjoy going all natural :)
If your guide does an exceptional job, you may show your appreciation with a tip.

Join us for another free legal name change clinic. We will supply you with all of the paperwork needed for the name change and help you answer any questions you may have while navigating this often confusing process. It’s easier with friends!
Our clinic is free, but there are different costs associated with the name change process that you will pay to different agencies along the way, and they are as follows:
Fingerprint fees: $10 each (you’ll need 2 sets)
State background check: $14
FBI background check: $18
Name change petition: $120
Notary fees: vary by location
There is also a charge for a new copy of your birth certificate, but that depends on what state you were born in. To find that info, check https://www.vitalchek.com.
Not all fees are due at the same time in the name change process. Fingerprints are the first step in the process which you then send off for the the state and FBI background checks. The federal background check can take up to 3 months to return, so you will have a little time to get the filing fee for the name change petition together.
If you feel like you would be more comfortable with an escort to the ID Bureau for fingerprinting or to the courthouse to file papers, please let us know in advance of the clinic date so that we can make the proper arrangements.

Summer is almost here. Get ready to take the plunge into the pool of refreshingly challenging and entertaining classes offered by The Asheville School of Improv. The sunny sky is the limit for your comedic instincts and spontaneity skills with three different levels of classes staring up the second week in May For information and signup, click here: http://ashevilletheatre.org/education/adult-classes/ or call (828) 254-1320 x2
Here are the classes currently offered:
Improv I: The Basics of Inspired Improvisation
Incorporating aspects of the top improv programs in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles, this course covers the fundamentals of improvisational acting with an emphasis on comedy; such as listening, commitment, adding information, agreement, intuitive reaction over desperate invention, as well as recognizing and capitalizing on emerging patterns. The class is crafted in such a way to have participants gradually gain their improv instincts through enjoyable and achievable exercises rather than teaching them the taste of disappointment and frustration. Students will gain experience in unscripted comedic performance through improvised stories, scenes, games and group structures. The final class will be open to friends and family to attend to give the students a chance to feel the lift of performing for a live audience.
Summer 2019 Dates:
Mondays, 6:30 – 9:00 pm
May 13th – June 17th
Performance: Wednesday, June 19th, 2019
Cost: $225
Improv II: Beyond the Basics – Learning to Fly
Improv II will reinforce all of the skills learned in Improv I by applying those skills to advanced scene work, original character development structures, and intentionally conflict-filled scenarios. Beyond Basic will encourage students to no longer be bound by the rules of improv but to swing freely and see that the strategies are not restricting but sound instincts. Students will gain further experience in unscripted comedic performance through more involved improvised stories, scenes, games and group structures. The final class will be open to friends and family to attend to give the students a chance to feel the lift of performing for a live audience.
Prerequisite: Improv 1 or extensive improv experience (approved by instructor)
Summer 2019 Dates:
Tuesdays, 6:30-9:00 pm
May 14th – June18th, 2019
Performance: Wednesday, June 19th, 2019
Cost: $225.00
Improv III: The Performance Lab – The Harold
The Asheville School of Improv is excited to offer a special edition of The Performance Lab focused on the classic long-form improv structure, The Harold. Originally performed by the troupe, The Committee, in San Francisco in the late 60s, this three-tiered structure is now performed by troupes all around the world. Instructor Tom Chalmers studied The Harold with one its original creators, Del Close, at Improv Olympic in Chicago. Tom performed Harolds as part of the college troupes, The Purple Crayon of Yale and Columbia’s Six Milks. Tom continued to do Harolds with a number of NYC troupes, including Gigantic Man, The Upright Citizens Brigade’s first house team, with fellow members Paul Scheer and Rob Huebel. Tom is currently a member of the popular Ashevile improv troupe, Reasonably Priced Babies.
This six-week course will focus on teaching the basic structure of The Harold as well as strategies on how best to execute the stages of the long-form structure; the opening, the scenes, and the group games. Students will learn how to pull apart themes, insert and invent fun filler games, as well as how to establish and return to scenes through practiced approaches like time dash, same dynamic, world within a world, and more. The class will also reinforce the philosophy preached by Del Close: there is no set way to do a Harold. Rigidity is the enemy of spontaneity.
Students will act as a Harold troupe (or troupes) and perform the format several times over the several Sundays and eventually perform a Harold in front of a paying audience as part of an end-of-class performance, currently scheduled for June 23rd
Prerequisite: Improv 1 and II and/or teacher’s approval
Class Size: Maximum of 12 students
Summer 2019 Dates
Sundays, 6:00-8:00 pm
May 12th – June 15th, 2019
Performance: Sunday, June 23rd, 2019 at 6:30 pm
Cost: $200
About the Asheville School of Improv
The Asheville School of Improv has emerged as the central training ground for aspiring improvisers in the Asheville area. Led by esteemed instructor Tom Chalmers, the Asheville School of Improv offers classes that cover the fundamentals as well as the finer points and far-reaching possibilities of performing in an improvised format. More and more people from more and more places are saying “yes” to The House of “Yes And,” from those focused on a future as an improv comedian, to aspiring actors seeking to expand their skills, to interested individuals who are intrigued by the challenge of the sport of spontaneity.
Launched in 2016 , the Asheville School of Improv grew out of the former Asheville acting conservatory, NYS3, which had been offering improv classes since 2012, all taught by one teacher, Tom Chalmers. A graduate of Columbia University, Tom has been absorbing, performing, and advocating improv comedy for over thirty years. While at college, Tom spent summers in Chicago studying with Second City and Improv Olympic, where he learned under improv legend, Del Close. Tom chose to stay in New York where he trained with The Groundlings East / Gotham City Improv. He was a student, performing company member, teacher, and eventually Artistic Director. While in New York, Tom also trained with the Upright Citizen’s Brigade and Burn Manhattan. Tom’s former students have gone on to work on such shows as Saturday Night Live, The Simpsons, and Family Guy, as well as several successful feature films. Tom has been an instructor at NYU, a guest lecturer at Columbia, and is currently an Adjunct Professor at Warren Wilson College. Tom takes all the best ideas and approaches from all the people and programs that he has worked with and blends them together to define his supportive yet demanding style of teaching.
