Nature Across the Carolinas: Fiber Art with Quilts
Sep 9 all-day
NC Arboretum

This exhibit showcases the work of three leading fiber artists who explore Western North Carolina’s mountains, meadows and marshes using fabrics and fibers. Their quilted wall art offers a link to familiar images of this region, echoing the Arboretum’s role of connecting people with plants. Through their diverse styles, construction methods and subject matter, artists Mary Stori, Judy Simmons and Kate Weston add a contemporary twist to the area’s rich and storied quilt-making tradition. Their exhibit features  pieces of varying sizes, from large focal-point wall hangings to medium-sized wall art to small work suitable for tabletop display. All pieces are for sale, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting The North Carolina Arboretum Society.

About the Artists

Mary Stori

From her home in Clyde, N.C., Mary creates botanical and organic themed art quilts using artisian-made, hand-dyed cotton, linen, silk and rayon fabrics. She also utilizes hand-felted and hand-dyed wool as rich backdrops, offering texture and depth to her work. Bead embellishment is another one of her trademarks. Learn more on her website.

Judy Simmons

Judy creates her own fabric in her Fletcher, N.C. studio using surface design techniques, including fabric marbling, dyeing, color lifting and silk screening. Much of the imagery in her work utilizes her own photography printed on fabric. To learn more about Judy, please click here.

Kate Weston

From her home in Statesville, N.C., Kate focuses on the creation of complex cloth through the application of dye, paint and embellishment, such as fabric overlay or manipulation and the application of non-fiber materials.  Coupled with skillful machine quilting, Kate’s works create and stunning interplay of color and texture. Nature Across the Carolinas: Fiber Art with Quilts
Sep 13 all-day
NC Arboretum

Please visit Kate’s website to learn more.

Brews and Bears
Sep 14 @ 5:30 pm – 5:45 pm

“Brews and Bears has sold out each year we’ve had it, and people enjoy it so much. This year we added
two more dates to make sure that everyone who wants to join in can do so,” said Kelly Shanafelt,
Executive Director of the Friends of the WNC Nature. The fundraiser gives attendees the rare opportunity
to visit the Nature Center past 5PM. “Many of our animals are more active in the evening and guests
really enjoy seeing them in this different setting,” said Shanafelt.

Admission to Brews & Bears is $8 for Friends of the WNC Nature Center members, and $10 for
non-members. The event is intended primarily for adults, although youth are welcome to attend with the
purchase of a ticket. Children under 2 are free. Tickets are available online at www.wildwnc.org/event or
in person at the Center. Proceeds from both ticket and beverage sales will go to support the Friends of the
WNC Nature Center.
The Friends’ mission is to support the programs, facilities and the residents of the Western North Carolina
Nature Center, which showcases the fauna and flora of the southern Appalachian region. The WNC
Nature Center connects people with the animals and plants of the Southern Appalachian Mountain region
by inspiring appreciation, nurturing understanding, and advancing conservation of the region’s rich
biodiversity. For more information on the Friends of the WNC Nature Center, or to join the Friends and
support future projects, visit www.wildwnc.org.

Naturalist Niche: Fall Migration Bird Walk
Sep 15 @ 7:30 am – 10:00 am
Chimney Rock Park

The early bird gets…to see and hear early birds! This special bird walk was designed to start before the Park opens to ensure participants get the best chance to encounter a variety of birds. Taking place during fall migration also enhances the number of species expected to be in our area. This hike is considered moderate and is the prelude to the our 10th Annual Flock to the Rock event which starts at 11am. Click here to see what birds you might see during your hike. This hike is considered easy to moderate.
We  love our visitors’ furry friends, but we do understand that some hike participants may consider animals a distraction on the trail. Pets are not allowed on Naturalist Niche hikes because of this.
Advance registration required. Cost includes Park admission for the day.
