Catman2 is having an interest meeting for a youth club.
Youth participants will learn about companion animals and the organizations that help them and the people who care about them in our community. They will learn the value of community service, enhance youth leadership skills, form new friendships and bonds with mentors, and get introduced to advocacy for animal welfare. The club will be led by humane educator Kaleb Lynch (Shelter Manager of Catman2) and will eventually become youth led, where participants will decide on issues that are important to them and come up with service projects for the community.
There is no requirement to volunteer at Catman2 (although we would absolutely welcome anyone interested!) or being around live animals for those who are allergic but still care about animal welfare. Service projects may include bake sale fundraisers, change collecting, supply drives, etc.
Our goal is to encourage children to be compassionate and empathetic, and to learn about issues in the community through a humane lens. We want the youth participants to feel like they are stakeholders in animal issues and know that their ideas are valued.
We will meet in the Conference Room at the Jackson county Public Library from 6:30-7:30pm on Tuesday Nov 6. We will have snacks and can seat up to 20 people. Parents/guardians are welcome to attend though depending on the number of attendees, it may be limited to standing room.
Open to youth grades 4-8. We plan to have a teen club and a younger club created at a later date.

We’ve been talking to the folks from Bardic Alchemy, a Celtic Rock band from Asheville and they’ve agreed to play at Triskelion as many Tuesdays as they can come down to the Brewery.
Bardic Alchemy is a brand new element in the Celtic Rock world. This trio, based in the mountains of Asheville, North Carolina is comprised of multi-instrumentalist Connell Sanderson, guitarist Nick Marcone and percussionist and vocalist Tyler Watts.
Bardic Alchemy is best described as a psychedelic trip into a musical world that is heavily inspired by the Celtic musical traditions…run through various effects pedals. Everything from soothing, mellifluously reverberating whistle melodies supported by groovy guitar lines and thumping djembe beats to high energy dance tunes on the Scottish and Irish pipes to three part vocal harmonies and even improvised pieces, Bardic Alchemy is a surprisingly dynamic and unpredictable musical journey.
So… Tuesdays… will now be…
Celtic Rock Tuesday!

Join us at Habitat Tavern and Commons as we partner with UNC Asheville to learn about our electoral systems on Tuesday, Nov. 6!
Dr. Ashley Moraguez (Political Science) and Dr. Patrick Bahls (Math and Honors Program) present:
“Why Do / Don’t People Vote? And What Can Go Wrong With Voting, Anyway?”
Since it’s Election Day, tonight we’ll consider elections with UNC Asheville Professors Ashley Moraguez (Political Science) and Patrick Bahls (Mathematics).
Fifty-five percent of eligible voters turned out to vote in 2016, a 20-year low for presidential elections. Turnout in the 2014 midterms was just 36.4 percent, the lowest since World War II. Why are turnout rates so low in the US, especially relative to other advanced democracies? And, let’s assume for a second that we managed to hold an election completely free of fraud and unfairness, that everyone who’s allowed to vote does so and does so only once. Can we go home and pat ourselves on the back for a successful dose of democracy?
Tonight we’ll talk about Arrow’s Theorem, Duverger’s Law, and Donald Saari’s geometric analysis of positional systems in order to learn just how much can go wrong with a seemingly ordinary election. And, we’ll discuss the paradox of voting in the United States, explore some of the individual and institutional factors that determine turnout, and discuss the implications they have for our democracy.

CLASSES
7pm: Continuing Class: Blues w/ Charlie
The music and dance aesthetics of Blues and Lindy share a common heritage as African American artforms which developed from late 1800’s, through the turn of the century, to today. We will be looking at blues in terms of four core concepts: Grounding, Pulse, Polyrhythms, and Lag. We will also talk about the concept of ‘dance idioms,’ specifically the blues idioms of Drag, Struttin, and the Texas Shuffle. Nov 6 — Basics of blues and added vocabulary to build you blues sentences. Nov 13 — Modulation and isolations in blues and an intro to Drag. Nov 20 — Dance control, speeding up, and Struttin’. Nov 27 — The Texas Shuffle and breaking down. This series of lessons will be focused on progressive concepts which will build on one another from week to week. This would be very useful for beginners looking to move up to intermediate or for intermediate dancers to hone their core skills.
“Continuing” classes are for those dancers who have cemented the basics of the dance being featured that specific month. This includes knowing (and being able to execute cleanly and consistently) basic footwork and lead/follow skills for that dance. Some continuing classes may require no advance knowledge of a dance. This will be noted in the the class description.
*******************
8 pm: Core Class: Beginner Partner Charleston & Jitterbug w/ Sparrow & Jean
This month we will be doing beginner partnered Charleston. Focusing mostly on side-by-side 30s style, we will also add in some jitterbug steps to give your dancing a little more variety and swing. No partner necessary! You’ll get to switch roles and dance with everyone.
“Core” lessons stress the fundamentals of swing dancing for beginning dancers. Lessons rotate monthly to focus on a different kind of swing dance (6 Count Lindy, 8 Count Lindy, Charleston, Balboa, etc.). Because good fundamentals are hard to develop in one month, we recommend repeating Core lessons (on the same topic) to help develop the solid foundation you’ll need in continuing classes. Core lessons are also great for intermediate and advanced dancers who want to “get back to basics” or learn a different dancing role (lead vs. follow).

GIFT CERTIFICATES
Do you want to buy a gift certificate for our classes as a gift, or to pre-pay for a block of classes for yourself? You can purchase gift certificates at the door at our weekly dance! They are $40 for a block of 4, and a great way to dive into the fun world of dance.

Masterful genre-benders and the leading virtuosos on their respective instruments, Béla Fleck, Zakir Hussain, and Edgar Meyer move with ease among the worlds of classical, bluegrass, and world music. Three of the most limitless creators and composers in the history of music, Fleck, Hussain, and Meyer touch every geographical and stylistic corner of the musical world.
Béla Fleck has been called the premier banjo player in the world and has virtually reinvented the image and the sound of the instrument. He has won 11 Grammy® Awards and has been nominated in more different categories than anyone in Grammy history.
A classical tabla virtuoso of the highest order, Zakir Hussain is widely considered a chief architect of the contemporary world music movement. This Grammy Award winner won the 1999 National Heritage Fellowship – the United States’ most prestigious honor for a master in traditional arts.
Hailed by The New Yorker as “…the most remarkable virtuoso in the relatively un-chronicled history of his instrument,” Edgar Meyer is in demand as both a classical bassist and composer. In 2011, Meyer joined cellist Yo-Yo Ma, mandolinist Chris Thile, and fiddler Stuart Duncan for the Sony Masterworks recording The Goat Rodeo Sessions, which was awarded the 2012 Grammy Award for Best Folk Album.

Jerry Joseph And The Jackmormons
w/ Daniel Hutchens (of Bloodkin)
November 6, 2018
Weird Blood is Jerry Joseph’s third album released in as many years with his band the Jackmormons, Steve Drizos on drums and Steven James Wright on bass, and produced by Dave Schools (J Mascis and the Fog, Hard Working Americans, Stockholm Syndrome). Glide Magazine premieres the album opener, “Sweet Baba Jay”, “reminiscent of Elvis Costello but with more of a defiant punk edge… the song taps into a sort of UK pub rock glory, but with Josephâs own unique and vivid storytelling at the helm.” Read and listen here.
In 2015, Joseph and the Jackmormons went into TRI Studios with Dave Schools and walked out with 20 songs. Those songs became the albums Istanbul/Fog Of War (10/2015) and By The Time Your Rocket Gets to Mars (4/2016). The plan was to release a third album, an EP, with the remaining three finished songs supplemented by couple of new songs that Joseph would write. The plan went sideways.
I rented a tiny house about a mile from my home so I could write but be home for dinner and kid bedtime. I ended up writing a fistful of songs. It was cold early January but a perfect place to write. Weird stuff was happening in general, one of those weeks where I had my copy of Black Star and David Bowie died, Joseph recalls. I tend to do the mad scribble thing when I write.
When after a week of writing, Joseph arrived at Jackpot Studios, Schools was adamant they record all the new songs. They also recorded a couple written in Scotland, Sweet Baba Jay and Late Heavy Bombardment and a few that theyve been performing, but had never recorded. The past few years weve been trying to figure out album slots for some of the hundred originals that are part of our live repertoire but have never been recorded, like Wild Wild West which has been around since the late 90s, remarks Joseph. The tiny house songs became the core of Weird Blood.
âWhen I write in a flurry like that, it’s hard to see a thread. It feels more like a purge than a considered attempt at art but in the end I seem to get to stuff that I can’t get to when I’m thinking too hard.
So here is the ârecorded during a massive snow storm at Jackpot Studiosâ record. âThere was a lot of blood, it was pretty weird,â I don’t even know where that came from, scribbled on something, and turned into a uncomfortable song.â
The prolific writer has released more than 30 records and has a catalog of over 250 original songs and counting. Joseph has always stayed busy on the road, not only touring the US but also far-flung, under-explored locales. In the past couple years he has traveled to war-torn regions to bring supplies and teach and share music. In 2015 he brought instruments and volunteered as a music instructor at an underground co-ed rock school in Kabul, Afghanistan. This Spring, he brought guitars and supplies and taught and performed for the residents of a permanent refugee camp in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.
“For me, it was pretty profound. There were these teenage girls learning to play, Syrian Kurds. I wonder sometimes about the power or magic of music, but we certainly attach a lot to it. I think that there are these moments that Iâve found where music does make a difference. Showing these kids how to play a few guitar chords or teaching them ‘Three Little Birds’ by Bob Marley and teaching them about empowerment. It doesn’t matter if itâs clay or dance shoes, no one can take it away from you. They can take the guitar or the paint, but they canât take your creative thinking. A lot of these kids and adults feel isolated and alone, and you go, ‘Here [hand them a guitar and a social media account], Youâre not alone. Youâre part of something beautiful and bigger.'”

Daniel has been writing, recording, and performing his songs professionally since 1994. He has recorded and toured solo, as well as with his rock n roll band Bloodkin. He has also toured and recorded with Moe Tucker and Sterling Morrison of the Velvet Underground, appeared onstage with Lou Reed, Mike Mills, Government Mule, Allen Ginsberg, Drive-By Truckers, and the touring giants Widespread Panic (who have also recorded and regularly perform several Hutchens compositions). He has co-written songs with Widespread Panic, Jerry Joseph, David Barbe, and more. He has recorded with Johnny Sandlin, Roger Hawkins and David Hood of Muscle Shoals fame, John Keane, and David Barbe (eight records and counting).
Officially-released Hutchens compositions now number over 200, and counting unreleased material, the song catalogue has now passed 500 titles. Hutchens plans to release a book of lyrics, as well as a book of selected poems, journal entries and essays in 2018.
Justin Gage of AQUARIUM DRUNKARD has written of Daniel, “I put his catalog right up there with the likes of Townes Van Zandt, Alejandro Escovedo and Steve Earle in terms of truly capturing the nuances of humanity, both the light and the dark, in song…[Hutchens] is a national treasure.”
David Fricke wrote in ROLLING STONE that “There may be no better description of America’s original family values than Hutchens’ reference in the acid-country jangle of ‘Rhododendron’ to ‘A touch of Old Testament iron/And a whiff of wild rhododendron.’ ”
Stephen M. Deusner wrote of Hutchens’ songwriting in PITCHFORK: “As if the legacy of Faulkner or even the Beats were alive on vinyl rather than in ink.”
Bassist/producer Dave Schools said in Popmatters, “I’ve been very lucky…to work with genius songwriters like the guys in Widespread Panic, Vic Chesnutt, Jerry Joseph, Danny Hutchens, and Todd Snider. Their ability to render their emotions in words blows my mind on a daily basis.”
The newest Daniel Hutchens record, THE BEAUTIFUL VICIOUS CYCLE OF LIFE, was released on April 22, 2016. Produced by Widespread Panic’s Dave Schools and engineered by David Barbe, the release also features musicians Dave Schools, Duane Trucks, David Barbe, Jesse Aycock, Frank MacDonnell, Todd Nance, William Tonks, Eric Carter, and Thayer Sarrano.

When not touring, Emma lives in Idaho, where she keeps kids and bees with varying degrees of success.
