Chicago Don hosts the AGB Stage for our Big City Blues Jam. Come sign up to play!
Chicago, Detroit, New York. Bright lights. Big city. Get mesmerized in the sound of Big City Blues. Clear, sharp melodies on horns and harps contrast the deep, rich back beats of the electric bass. Keyboard riffs battle electric guitars that are on fire, and classic blues drum beats drive home the groove. Lose yourself in a night of soulful music reminiscent of Freddie King, Charlie Robison, Billie Holiday, Luther Allison in the smoke filled dance halls of the past.

“A potent mix of soulful blues, Latin roots rhythm, and moody pop” – NPR
Phat Lip is a Greenville-based band that fuses Afro-Cuban and Colombian folklore rhythms with catchy, American pop.
Colombian American singer-songwriter Kelly Jo Ramirez began as a solo acoustic act, performing in South Carolina’s most reputable bars and restaurants, and formed funk-rock band The Kelly Jo Connect in 2010. In 2016, even after a band hiatus, The Greenville News named her “Best Female Vocalist.” Ramirez’s exposure to a constant flow of bilingual culture – growing up listening to Latin heroes like Joe Arroyo and Celia Cruz alongside pop greats like Prince and Paul Simon – set the stage for Phat Lip.
Ramirez started Phat Lip as a GarageBand pastime. Her build-it-and-they-will-come mentality led to a five-song EP and a group of four guys ready to dabble in Latin fusion. The EP, Vision, offers a spectrum of American, Latin, and even Brazilian influences that intertwine effortlessly. The single “Stranger’s Love” is completely immersed in Afro-Caribbean flair, while “City Lights” dances between capoeira and grunge-era rock.
“Phat Lip is a perfect-fit combination of Kelly Jo’s passionate, explosive voice and a modern-day version of the Latin pop she loved as a child.” – Greenville Journal

The Music of Frank Zappa: An Evening With Ugly Radio Rebellion ft. Ike Willis at The Grey Eagle
Ugly Radio Rebellion origins go back to a Detroit band known as Uncle Meat. In 2002, guitarist Scott Schroen felt inspired to start a project consisting of everyone and anyone capable of playing the music of Frank Zappa, a definite challenge.
An ad was placed in the local paper simply stating, “musicians wanted to perform the music of Frank Zappa”, and so ensued a few weekends of what was later dubbed, “Zappa Survivor”. Groups of musicians drilled selected pieces during rehearsal, and later everyone would vote on who they think should stay for the next round. The few that were left from the ‘survivor’ sessions ultimately became the lineup for the band Uncle Meat. The project performed FZ around the greater Detroit area until the last show on Frank’s birthday, December 2003. Eventually Uncle Meat was disbanded but Scott Schroen and bassist Preston Parish reformed the project as… Ugly Radio Rebellion.
IKE WILLIS
Singer and guitarist who was a regular sideman for Frank Zappa, first joining Zappa’s band for the 1978 tour. He didn’t tour with Zappa in 1981 and 1982, but returned for Zappa’s final two tours in 1984 and 1988.
Among others, he is featured in Joe’s Garage, Tinsel Town Rebellion, You Are What You Is and is the title character and narrator in Zappa’s off-Broadway-styled conceptual musical Thing-Fish.

The 8th Annual International Black Jar Honey Tasting & Cocktail Event begins on Thursday, June 13, 2019, at 5:30pm, just about the time our panel of celebrity judges are completing their mission to choose the Best Honey In The World from submissions from all over the world. Attendees will also get to taste national and international honeys, bid in our silent auction, mingle with the judges who include Mayor Esther Manheimer, internationally reknown Chef Katie Button of Curate, singer Kat Williams and more, snack, drink and schmooze, all to the sounds of live music. It all takes place at the Renaissance Hotel where the Center for Honeybee Research, beneficiary of this fundraiser, maintains hives on the roof. This is our 8th Annual event, marking the same number of years that the Center’s research into colony collapse disorder has been underway – possibly the longest running such project anywhere! CCD is threatening the lives of honeybees around the planet, so supporting the Center’s work is critically important, and we’ve planned a delicious, pleasant way for attendees to do it.
Mountain Voices is a community chorus with 70 members from Franklin and surrounding counties. The concert will include a variety of music: Broadway, pops, patriotic, folk and gospel. The chorus is accompanied by piano, brass, strings and other instruments. Come join us for a joyous musical evening!

An estimated 5 million older persons are abused, neglected, and exploited each year. In addition, elders throughout the United States lose an estimated $2.6 billion or more annually due to elder financial abuse and exploitation; funds that could have been used to pay for basic needs such as housing, food, and medical care.
Each year, BCHHS dedicates the month between Mother’s Day and Father’s Day to Elder Abuse Awareness efforts. These efforts draw attention to the important issue of elder abuse and offer our community the chance to learn more and speak up.
Please join BCHHS and other community agencies at the 3rd Annual WEAAD Walk on June 13 from 5-7 p.m. at Carrier Park. This is a family friendly event facilitated by WLOS news caster, Kimberly King. There will be food, ice cream, and vendors representing important services that protect our community from elder abuse. CLICK HERE to register and to get a free tee shirt! Supplies are limited so reserve your spot now.
The 12th annual Firefly Gathering will take place June 13-16, 2019 at Deerfields in Mills River, NC, just 30 minutes outside of Asheville.
We gather each summer to learn and celebrate the skills necessary to live with the Earth. Our family-friendly content and culture bring together folks of all ages.
Each day is full of workshops spanning wilderness survival skills to permaculture, plant identification to cooking over fire, cow milking to bowl carving, basket weaving to blacksmithing. Through our time together at Firefly, we not only share skills to connect to the land, we connect also with ourselves, one another, our ancestors, and our future generations.
Please note, our magical gathering at Deerfields has no cell phone service and no wifi available. Plan to bring cash or check for materials fees, food vendors, and craft vendors.
