Back to school time is right around the corner (sorry kids), and Buncombe County wants to help make sure every student has everything they need.

When: July 15-Aug. 12

Where:  Donation boxes will be located at:

  • County HR, on the first floor of 200 College St.
  • 60 Court Plaza, Sheriff’s Office on the 4th floor
  • Buncombe County Detention Facility
  • Jeff Hewitt’s Office at Leicester Crossing on New Leicester Hwy

Types of donations needed: backpacks, pencils, crayons, glue sticks, packs of Kleenex, paper, wireless notebooks, folders, money donations.

Take The Plunge for Health!

This fun and family-friendly lakeside celebration will support The Free Clinics and its unique healthy living program, HealthWays, which makes good health contagious in our community.

Local celebrities, including Superintendent Bo Caldwell, WTZQ’s Mark Warwick & Paige Posey, Vision Henderson County’s Ruth Birge, Major Frank Stout of the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office, and The Free Clinics’s own Judith Long will be lined up on the tossing block where bidders can vie for the chance to push them in the lake.   Infamous auction-tainers Duke & Bird will lead the sure-to-be raucous event, awarding the “Early Bird”, “Hot Ticket”, and “Golden Plunger” awards to the “Plungees” who bring in the most donations in advance, at the event, and in total respectively.

Community members who want to see a Plungee “take the plunge” can visit them in person to fill their donation buckets, make contributions online, or on-site at the event. All Plungee and event proceeds will support The Free Clinics and its HealthWays program, a free community health program open to all Henderson and Polk residents.

Event attendees will enjoy wood-fired pizza from Flat Rock Village Bakery, burgers and hot dogs from Kanuga, and a selection of craft beers, cider, and soft drinks. Live music will be provided by Hendersonville’s TNT Band, specializing in popular rock and country oldies. Children will enjoy the lifeguarded splash and play area and face-painting, while all guests can partake in swimming, kayaking, games, and fun photo opportunities.

Plungee Ruth Birge says, “I am so lucky to be included in The Plunge. Who wouldn’t want a chance at winning the “Golden Plunger”?! I mean, what an honor! Really, such fun. By the way, does anyone have a really big inner tube I can use so I won’t have to go all the way under? Yikes!”

“After 14 years working in healthcare in our community, I know someone has longed to push me in the lake. Well, now’s your chance. Give in to that urge…and help our vulnerable neighbors at the same time,” dares TFC’s executive director Judith Long.

Tickets are on sale now for $20 for adults (13yrs+) and $5 for children (5-12 yrs). Children under 5 are free. Family tickets are available for $45 to admit two guardians plus children. Admission includes one food item and one beverage per person, with additional food and beverages available for purchase.

After graduating from the University of Georgia she hit the local comedy scene and has thrilled audiences since day one. To her credit she has appeared on NickMom’s Night Out, Viceland and was a semi-finalist on Season 9 of NBC’s Last Comic Standing. She has appeared on Inside Amy Schumer and the movie Mother’s Day. In 2017, she was named a New Face at the Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal and Atlanta’s Creative Loafing named her the city’s Best Stand-Up. Smart, funny, and versatile, Mia entertains all types of crowds. She just filmed her Comedy Central special at the end of January.

Sweet Dreams, Full Plates Third Annual Campaign September

Asheville’s hospitality industry is proving sweet dreams can truly turn into full plates.

This September, over 45 hotels are coming together for the third annual Sweet Dreams, Full Plates campaign – a major collaboration aimed at connecting Asheville area’s thriving tourism industry to local hunger relief issues.

The idea is simple. Hotel guests, during the month of September, are given the opportunity to forgo stayover services by hanging a door hanger on their room door. The door hanger says, “We Fed A Family,” and for every room that chooses to participate, the hotel makes a $2 donation on their behalf.

With each $2 donation, MANNA FoodBank is able to provide enough food for seven meals.

Sweet Dreams, Full Plates Third Annual Campaign September

Asheville’s hospitality industry is proving sweet dreams can truly turn into full plates.

This September, over 45 hotels are coming together for the third annual Sweet Dreams, Full Plates campaign – a major collaboration aimed at connecting Asheville area’s thriving tourism industry to local hunger relief issues.

The idea is simple. Hotel guests, during the month of September, are given the opportunity to forgo stayover services by hanging a door hanger on their room door. The door hanger says, “We Fed A Family,” and for every room that chooses to participate, the hotel makes a $2 donation on their behalf.

With each $2 donation, MANNA FoodBank is able to provide enough food for seven meals.

Please join us on the evening of Thursday October 24, 2019 at the Diana Wortham Theatre. This event supports the quality health care and education programs that Planned Parenthood provides in the Asheville community.                                                                                                    STANDING STRONG details

Sponsor Lunch with Irin: 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Sponsor Reception with Irin: 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Main Program: 7:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Private Champagne and Dessert Reception  8:00 to 9:00 p.m.

The Sponsor Reception ($1,000+) begins at 5:30 p.m. at Diana Wortham Theatre. Guests will meet Irin Carmon and enjoy complimentary wine and heavy hors d’oeuvres before the program.

Doors open for all at 6:30 p.m. with curtain time at 7:00 p.m. in the Diana Wortham Theatre. Irin will deliver the keynote address.

To close out an evening supporting our critical work, sponsors ($500 – $150) are invited to the Private Champagne and Dessert Reception immediately following the program.

Come enjoy the greatest tunes of several generations with The Rewind Band, enjoy some of the tastiest beverages from the famous taps of Highland Brewing Company, and fill up with “Creative Tex-Mex” from Baa’d Sheep Burritos Food Truck on October 3, 2019 at Highland Brewing Company in Asheville, North Carolina.

This fun and fabulous event will be the first of many coming your way to raise funds for administrative costs and to garner awareness for Throwing Bones, a patient-focused registered 501(c)3 for patients fighting multiple myeloma and other blood cancers. Throwing Bones’ mission is to inspire ALL blood cancer patients to keep moving forward with active lifestyles during treatment and beyond.
