“The Tel Aviv performance troupe Mayumana has an infectious beat and physical pyrotechnics to match.” (The New York Times)
“The 90 minutes of dancing, songs, and percussion will have your inner child smiling.” (The New York Times)
Currents is a spectacular show of “funky moves and cutting-edge technology” (Time Out New York) inspired by the historical Battle of Currents between Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla in their quest to find energy sources for the world.
Audience members will be taken on a “non-stop, action packed” (ABC News) journey between two troupes, each representing a different view of the essence of light and electricity. The show combines a variety of elements including specially designed musical instruments, massive video art projections, and 11 skilled performers musically juggling between different sounds.
About the company
In 1996, Elyon Nuphar and Boaz Berman, driven by their deep love for percussion and music, created the first Mayumana show. The company’s shared passion for rhythm, fueled by their unique sense of humor and mischief, is inexhaustible and infectious. Sixteen years later, with performers from more than 20 different nationalities, Mayumana has become one of Israel’s leading cultural exports and has entertained millions of people around the world.

The Open Jam at Noble Kava welcomes players of all kinds to come explore, push boundaries, step out of comfort zones, gain experience, and meet and play with musicians from Asheville and beyond. There are no genre restrictions, as long as it’s not too loud for the room. All genders and all peoples are welcome (also well behaved animals are welcome, too).
We provide full backline–drum kit, amps, piano, keys, and PA with mics/inputs. The jam is hosted by the house band, the Kavalactones, who play for the first half hour or so, and then the jam opens up. There’s no list. Just show up and let us know you want to play. We recommend bringing your own instrument (guitar, bass, musical saw, ect.), unless you play keys, or sticks if you play kit.
This is a weekly opportunity for experienced musicians to get together, talk, and share ideas in a living room-like setting. No alcohol is served, but players are invited to try kava at the two-fer-one rate, and kavalactone elixir shots are $1 off anytime the Kavalactones are playing at the bar. Bula!

Tuesday Night Funk Jam – 11PM – Ca$h Donation$ – 21+
EVERY Tuesday at Asheville Music Hall!
Tuesday Night Funk Jam has been a huge part of Asheville’s vibrant music scene since 2008 and is #Asheville’s hottest weekly concert.
Tuesday Night Funk Jam is programmed and orchestrated by an evolved Legendary House Band with trombonist Derrick Lee Johnson at the helm.
At 11PM sharp, the Legendary House Band kicks off the night followed by opening up the stage to jam to our local community of musicians for an ‘Open Jam’.
While this is an amazing opportunity for musicians to network and refine their musical chops it is ALSO an event for the people who support our music scene and need a night to shake their hips to the best funk around town!
Regularly, nationally touring musicians, TONIGHT funk jam is going to be off the chain. We have Lee Allen (of Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band) jumping back in with The Legendary House Band. Come out to the Asheville Music Hall tonight and help us kick off the first funk jam of 2019. We start at 11pm. #asheville #noplacelikehome #makemusiceveryday #mftnfj

Adding a Southeast destination for designer toy makers and collectors, *Assembly Required brings designer, bootleg and art toy artists from around the country, to present and sell their work.
Asheville’s premiere designer toy expo, *Assembly Required, is presented by Unboxing Asheville, Morgan’s Comic’s, 103.3 Asheville FM and Appalachian Pinball Museum. Focusing on this artistic movement, designer toys are a form of lowbrow pop art. These toy makers pull inspiration from a variety of subversive segments of culture, as well as subcultural elements, including (but not limited to) comics, tattooing, street art, and everything related to toys of the 60’s through the 80’s.
Echoing production methods of traditional toy manufacturers, designer toys are usually intended to be displayed as collectibles, rather than to be played with. Toy makers mediums range from resin to vinyl, from plastic to plush; with molding, and production techniques such as kitbash, sofubi and bootleg (recently coined ‘Artisanal Action Figure’, by New York Times writer, Rich Juzwiak [11/23/18]). (https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/23/style/bootleg-toys-action-figures.html).
Juzwiak interviews such artists as the Sucklord and Killer Bootlegs, both of whom will be present at *Assembly Required.

New UNC Asheville Chancellor Nancy J. Cable:
LAF Feb 27th Critical Issues Forum Luncheon
Dr. Nancy J. Cable, UNC Asheville’s eighth permanent chancellor, is now six months into her new job and already has dealt with at least one major challenge: just one day after she assumed the office, a fire safety issue was reported at a newly-completed campus dormitory complex. To insure the students’ safety, Dr. Cable worked out an agreement with state and local officials to temporarily house #Asheville firefighters in the dormitory while the issues were being corrected. That work has since been completed and the firefighters have moved out.
Dr. Cable has a distinguished resume. A member of Phi Beta Kappa, she earned her B.A. from Marietta College, a M.Ed. from the University of Vermont, and a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia. She also completed the Harvard University Institute for Educational Leadership.
Dr. Cable served as Dean at Denison University from 1977-1986, Guilford College from 1986-1991, and Vice President and Dean of Admission and Financial Aid at Davidson College from 1991-2005. Most recently, she had been president of the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations. She succeeds Dr. Mary Grant, who left in December 2017 to serve as president of the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate in Boston.
About her new position, Dr. Cable says “I am delighted and honored to be chosen… UNC Asheville is a true gem of an academic liberal arts and sciences institution…” At LAF’s February 27th event, she is expected to outline her vision for the university’s future.
If you have already made a reservation, please disregard this reminder.
