The Man in the Mirror
The contradictions in John Butler are evident, and, despite his magnificently successful career (with number one albums in Australia and sell-out tours) his is a troubled soul. One of the most successful recording artists Australia has ever produced and a musician whose reputation has begun to rock the waters of both Europe and America, Butler is nevertheless a man on the edge. Where will he go next? Up or down? Despite the tensions within the man and his music the new album makes his future trajectory abundantly clear.
An independent role model, founder of Australia’s Jarrah Records, family man and proud skateboard aficionado, JB, in spite of his matey public persona, remains an enigma. He is from everywhere and nowhere, an Australian/American, Everyman/Nowhere Man, and his music mixes rootedness and rootlessness, pain and celebration in a way that is utterly beguiling. He is the consummate rebel-refugee whose songs chart disenchantment with the corporate world and show a yearning for truth along with an ongoing struggle for a sense of locus. The songs’ off-centre grooves have always been their charm, and yet now there is a sense, in the new album at least, of resolution and peace after years of being against the world and what it offered. Maybe the man on the brink will not jump after all?

The Sufi Brothers are Aaron “Woody” Wood on vocals and guitar and Jason Krekel on vocals, mandolin, guitar, and fiddle. We represent over 15 years of Americana from Asheville – as true locals that have played a diverse collection of venues from revivals to dive bars. The Sufi Brothers play an improvised set that starts with a tribute to country roots, blues, gospel and folk, then travels a path unknown guided by an openness and sensitivity to each other and the universe. Like our namesake the Sufis – we let love and a higher power determine the course the music takes. (Photo: Libby Gamble)

Katherine Jessup hopes you like her comedy, but it’s cool if you don’t. (You probably will though.) Commanding stages with the winsome charm of your slightly too honest best friend, her comedy’s been described as sublime, profoundly relatable, and also available for birthday parties. She’s performed at festivals across the country, including Bentzen Ball, Women in Comedy, Blue Whale, Seattle International Comedy Competition, and Asheville’s own Laugh Your Asheville Off. She is a regular at clubs and theaters like the DC Improv and Kennedy Center, and is most proud of encouraging friends and colleagues to wear truly ridiculous sneakers.

Fux
Fux is like an Electric Storm, bringing back the Raw to Rock-n-Roll. The name derives from composer Johann Joseph Fux, who helped modernize Western Music and played an integral part in the development of the Counterpoint Theory. Blending their love for Phish, Umphrey’s McGee, TAUK, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Steely Dan and many classic rock bands, Sultan set out to find the final puzzle pieces to this mystical musical monster, which lead to the discovery of Daniel Hodsdon, Dylan Porper and Eric Johnson. Thus in an erotic crossfire hurricane Fux was born.
Fux decided it was time to take their knowledge and mend it with their soul to work towards getting the masses dancing, laid, and spreading Love. After receiving knowledge from idols Jacob Alan Cinninger, Brendan Bayliss (Umphrey’s McGee) and Gabriel Marin (Consider the Source) they were finally ready to show the world what was brewing in their mind to create music that makes sense.
Fux combines their goofy and laid back personalities on and off stage to help spread cheerfulness and positivity to the world. Don’t let their silly attitudes fool you, these boys show up to play. With the machine like transcendental rhythmic varieties from Eric , smooth melodic phrases from Dylan, thunderous bass love bombs from Daniel and sporadic ignition from Sultan, Fux will keep you dancing all night long.
