Bob Moog Foundation announces its fall raffle featuring a coveted, fully restored vintage Memorymoog Plus synthesizer, formerly owned, played, and signed by Dr. Fink of The Revolution. The Memorymoog was part of The Revolution’s touring rig on the Purple Rain, Around the World in a Day, and Parade tours.
Funds raised from the raffle will be used to expand the Foundation’s hallmark educational project, Dr. Bob’s SoundSchool, currently inspiring over 3,000 elementary school students per year through the science of sound. The raffle will also help support the Foundation’s newest project, the Moogseum, an immersive, experiential facility that brings Bob Moog’s legacy and the science of sound and synthesis alive for people of all ages. The newly opened Moogseum is located in downtown Asheville, NC.
The Junior League of Asheville, Inc. (JLA) will hold its third annual Volunteer Expo, on Saturday, February 29, 2020 at the Crowne Plaza Expo Center from 10am to 3pm. Modeled after a job fair, this free event will feature more than 70 local nonprofits looking to fill ongoing and future volunteer needs. Nonprofits in almost every area of community concern will be present at the event: health, poverty, legal aid, environmental stewardship, women’s issues, arts, civic leadership, technology, education and animal welfare.
Excitement for the Volunteer Expo continues to grow, with nonprofit participation growing year over year. The 2019 event featured over 70 non-profits with attendance at well over 1,000 community members coming to network and sign up to volunteer with nonprofit organizations.
The 2020 Volunteer Expo will be accepting applications starting in September. Due to the increase in interest for booths at the Expo, this year the League plans to review all applications received instead of awarding booths on a first come first serve basis. They hope this will ensure a good mix of volunteer opportunities in a variety of service areas as well as allow new nonprofits the chance to have a booth at the event. There will be a silent auction fundraiser, Cheers to Volunteers, the evening before the Volunteer Expo from 6pm to 9pm at the Masonic Temple in downtown Asheville. his urban scavenger hunt will take teams of four around the downtown area via a series of clues to sixteen different locations where they will be required to complete a task before receiving their next clue. Two volunteers will staff each secret location, checking teams in and out, throughout the day. Hot Works 4th Asheville Fine Art Show, October 26 & 27, 2019 takes place in Pack Square Park, downtown Asheville. This art show is juried by art professionals and brings artists to sell his/her art in all discipline including paintings, sculpture, clay, glass, fiber, jewelry, wood and more. All art is original and personally handmade by the artist who is present at the show. There is something for everyone, in all price ranges. You will see many artists at this show who do not attend other shows in North Carolina or South Carolina.
As part of our commitment to bring art education into the community, a Youth Art Competition for grades K-8 or ages 5-13 is integrated within a 10×20 space at the Asheville Fine Art Show. Sponsored by Institute for the Arts & Education, the associated 501c3 non-profit organization, all students in grades K-8 or ages 5-13 are encouraged to enter his/her original and personally handmade art that will be publicly displayed in the art show the entire weekend. On Sunday, October 27 at 3pm, there is $250 in youth art awards presented. Students are exposed to the rules and entrepreneurship opportunity of doing art shows for a living. The program brings families to the art show and exposes them to great art.
Artist Henry Richardson arrives this week to install his sculpture Reflections on Unity, Thursday, September 19. The two-ton sculpture, to be placed upon a boulder selected by Richardson from a local quarry, will be the first work installed in the Museum’s plaza as part of its inaugural public art sculptural exhibition.
- 6-foot, 2-ton, glass orb to be installed on the Museum’s plaza.
- The boulder will be installed by crane at 8am, followed by the orb at 11am.
- Pack Square will be closed only in front of the Museum for the crane from 8am to approximately 2pm at the latest.
- TIMES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE. Due to the nature of this installation (art and a crane are involved) we might run a little early or late.
Come join in the fun with stories and songs, then make a hands-on art project just for the little ones! The Education Department staff is visiting public libraries for preschool storytime at locations near your neighborhood.
Storytime & Art takes place at Skyland/South Buncombe Library on third Thursdays at 10:30am.
Our program for preschool-aged students accompanied by an adult is at a library near you! During the school year, come join in the fun with stories and songs, then make a hands-on art project just for the little ones.
Tour artists will be present and will
exhibit an example of their artwork to be found on the tour. Art Pod Maps
and refreshments from the Artful Cup will be available. The evening will
also include an art raffle benefitting Backpacks for Kids. Attendees can
catch the Rhythm and Brews music as a bonus.
This month visit ha! as we celebrate the launch of a new addition to the ha! shop textile collection. Designed by amber m. jensen and made entirely by hand of woven wool and waxed canvas – just in time for the season of cozy weather and holiday. What is it, you ask? Shhhhh…Its top secret until the opening!
We are also thrilled to showcase a large scale ceramic installation created by textile and ceramic artist Eleanor Anderson. Over eight feet tall the work is made of hard fired clay yet a clear reflection of her weaving practice and love for hand-drawn line and color.
Finally, our dear friend and baker Brennan Johnson of Walnut Schoolhouse joins us in a celebration of our shared Scandinavian Heritage with decadent Scandinavian pastries and baked goods. we can’t wait to invite you in!

Homework Diners take place weekly (except on school holidays or early release days). Families are invited to the cafeteria of the middle school during the scheduled time each week. No pre-registration is required to attend. Homework Diners currently take place at four area middle schools: Asheville, Enka, Erwin and Owen Middle. All are open to any family with a K-12 student in the surrounding school district with an adult family member in attendance with the participating student.

Community Garden located at the Buncombe County Sports Park.
The mission of Sand HIll Community Garden is to share in garden space, knowledge, and labor with all members of the community. Using organic growing practices we promote community health and wellness by providing fresh produce for garden members and local people in need of food.
Kudzu is actually tremendously useful, and the time will come (sooner rather than later) when we will appreciate that. Young leaves are delicious cooked like spinach, the flowers make a lovely jelly, and the vines themselves make durable cordage as well as fiber rivalling bamboo and hemp fibers now being used in everything from carpeting to bedsheets and clothing. Event Details
Big Sweep is a cooperative effort to close out river season with as many cleanups in one day as possible! Not only will groups be on 25+ miles of river, they will also be on land and in creeks doing cleanups. As just one of many organizations involved in this year’s 32nd Annual WNC Big Sweep, RiverLink will be leading a cleanup of the French Broad River along the Biltmore property.
Schedule of the day:
10am: Meet at Hominy Creek River Park
10am-10:30am: Safety training and carpool down to Bent Creek River Park
11am: Cleanup time!
3-6pm: Get off the water and then meet at Zen Tubing on RiverSide Dr. for an after-party with food and beverages!
What to Wear:
Prepare to get wet and dirty! Swimsuits, shorts, tank tops, tshirts. Shoes are important: please wear old sneakers or appropriate water shoes. NO flip flops, crocs, or heavy boots. Bring hat, sunscreen, and water for on the river. All safety gear and cleanup supplies will be provided.
Please note: Asheville Greenworks, MountainTrue, Mills River Partnership, and the City of Hendersonville will also be leading crews on the same date, on different sections. If you’d like to join them please contact each organization with questions about signing up for their teams.
Make sure to RSVP below as we have limited spaces in our boats. If you’d like to bring your own boat(s) you don’t need to RSVP, but we ask that you handle shuttling for your boat(s) yourself.
This free self-guided tour is a
celebration of local art when once a year artists across Henderson County
open their doors and invite the public behind the scenes to experience
their creative process. Meet the artists and see their latest work; find
special buys; view demonstrations of their craft. Original works in painting,
sculpture, pottery, jewelry, fiber arts, metal arts, woodworking and glass will
be offered by over 60 artists in 40 studios in the towns of Flat Rock, Tuxedo,
Hendersonville, Horse Shoe, Mills River, and Laurel Park. The Art League
of Henderson County is the Premier Tour sponsor.

Learn the basics of colorwork in this two hour workshop! This workshop comes with a copy of the beautiful Foliole Cowl pattern by Christina Danaee, and 20% off our Ranger DK yarns. During the workshop, you’ll work through as much of the Foliole cowl as possible with guidance from the teacher, Emilie Gate. By the end of the class you’ll have the skills you’ll need to finish your cowl on your own, and the skills for any other pattern that involves colorwork.
About the teacher
Emilie works for Echoview selling their Yarn to Shops around the country. She has been knitting for several years and loves to help others learn how to knit, grow in their skills, and be stretched in new ways. When she isn’t knitting she can be found with her four boys or raising their herd of Miniature Dairy Goats on their Mini Farm in Candler.
Come learn the basics of felt painting and needle techniques to create 2D felt wall hangings. We will demonstrate how to create wet felted batts as a base, the quickest way to start a 2D project. Then, we will needle tack merino, alpaca, angora and other types of wool to create a 2D painting of whatever your heart desires. Finally, we’ll run them through Echoview’s Felt Loom to quickly finish the project, a process that would take hours needling by hand! All supplies are included, but feel free to bring your own wool or roving if you’d like.
About the teacher:
Yoko is a felter, spinner, knitter, gardener and mother to many rabbits and ducks, including 8 Angoras who share their wool for lots of fiber fun. She has been an artist her entire life and rarely follows a given pattern, preferring to find a medium and make it her own. Working at Echoview with all the roving around her, she took up felt work and hasn’t looked back. She’s constantly on the lookout for new fibers, techniques and creative friends – whether chatting at craft night or cruising the isles of local craft events. She has taught a variety of art mediums to makers from babies to hospice patients over the years and enjoys bringing out the creative side in everyone!

Bob Moog Foundation announces its fall raffle featuring a coveted, fully restored vintage Memorymoog Plus synthesizer, formerly owned, played, and signed by Dr. Fink of The Revolution. The Memorymoog was part of The Revolution’s touring rig on the Purple Rain, Around the World in a Day, and Parade tours.
Funds raised from the raffle will be used to expand the Foundation’s hallmark educational project, Dr. Bob’s SoundSchool, currently inspiring over 3,000 elementary school students per year through the science of sound. The raffle will also help support the Foundation’s newest project, the Moogseum, an immersive, experiential facility that brings Bob Moog’s legacy and the science of sound and synthesis alive for people of all ages. The newly opened Moogseum is located in downtown Asheville, NC.
The Junior League of Asheville, Inc. (JLA) will hold its third annual Volunteer Expo, on Saturday, February 29, 2020 at the Crowne Plaza Expo Center from 10am to 3pm. Modeled after a job fair, this free event will feature more than 70 local nonprofits looking to fill ongoing and future volunteer needs. Nonprofits in almost every area of community concern will be present at the event: health, poverty, legal aid, environmental stewardship, women’s issues, arts, civic leadership, technology, education and animal welfare.
Excitement for the Volunteer Expo continues to grow, with nonprofit participation growing year over year. The 2019 event featured over 70 non-profits with attendance at well over 1,000 community members coming to network and sign up to volunteer with nonprofit organizations.
The 2020 Volunteer Expo will be accepting applications starting in September. Due to the increase in interest for booths at the Expo, this year the League plans to review all applications received instead of awarding booths on a first come first serve basis. They hope this will ensure a good mix of volunteer opportunities in a variety of service areas as well as allow new nonprofits the chance to have a booth at the event. There will be a silent auction fundraiser, Cheers to Volunteers, the evening before the Volunteer Expo from 6pm to 9pm at the Masonic Temple in downtown Asheville. Asheville Urban Odyssey, Sept. 22
his urban scavenger hunt will take teams of four around the downtown area via a series of clues to sixteen different locations where they will be required to complete a task before receiving their next clue. Two volunteers will staff each secret location, checking teams in and out, throughout the day.
