Discover America’s most-visited national park with a guided day hike! The Classic Hikes of the Smokies feature interpretation of the history, flora, and fauna of park trails. Hikes vary in distance, difficulty, and location within the park to provide a comprehensive overview of the Smokies, exposing hikers to high Appalachian vistas, streams teeming with aquatic life, the best collection of log structures on the Eastern Seaboard, and much more.

Due to COVID-19 we had to reschedule our our signature annual fundraising event, which is normally held in the fall. We will be following state and county guidelines to determine how to best hold our Authors for Literacy event for the health and safety of all. In the meantime, we will share more details in the coming months about our very special guest, so mark your calendar now!
The Break the Silence Speaker Series is Our VOICE’s largest fundraising event of the year. The series highlights the voice of a national leader, activist or survivor who has worked to improve systems in responding to and ending sexual assault or human trafficking in our communities.
This year, we are pleased to host Chanel Miller as our speaker.
Chanel Miller is a writer and artist who received her BA in Literature from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Her critically acclaimed memoir, KNOW MY NAME, was a New York Times bestseller, a New York Times Book Review Notable Book, and a National Book Critics Circle Award winner, as well as a best book of 2019 in Time, the Washington Post, the Chicago Tribune, NPR, and People, among others. She is a 2019 Time Next 100 honoree and a 2016 Glamour Woman of the Year honoree under her pseudonym, “Emily Doe.”
The event will kick off with a performance by Asheville vocalist, Jane Kramer.

The Break the Silence Speaker Series is Our VOICE’s largest fundraising event of the year. The series highlights the voice of a national leader, activist or survivor who has worked to improve systems in responding to and ending sexual assault or human trafficking in our communities. Before the world knew her name, Chanel Miller was inspiring millions and changing the landscape of how we talk about sexual assault.
As Emily Doe, the survivor of a highly publicized rape case at Stanford University, her victim impact statement (published with permission on BuzzFeed News) went viral—11 million people viewed it in just four days. Her perpetrator received a six-month sentence (of which he served only three months), but her story inspired changes in California law and the recall of the judge in the case.
Join New York Times bestselling author, Chanel Miller, as she talks about her breathtaking memoir, Know My Name. Her story illuminates a culture biased to protect perpetrators, indicts a criminal justice system designed to fail the most vulnerable, and, ultimately, shines with the courage required to move through suffering and live a full and beautiful life.
Her work has forever transformed the way we think about sexual assault, challenging our beliefs about what is acceptable, and speaking truth to the tumultuous reality of healing.

Asheville Outlets to Host March 2021 American Red Cross Blood Drives
Help those in need by donating blood. In response to continued demand, Asheville Outlets will host three blood drives in the month of March with the American Red Cross on Saturday, March 6, and Fridays March 12 and 19, 2021, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Each American Red Cross donation drive will be held at Asheville Outlets in Suite 850 located next to Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams Home Furnishings. Donors are asked to register in advance by visiting RedCrossBlood.org/give and entering the sponsor code AshevilleOutlets. All Blood Donations are tested for COVID-19 Antibody.
Blood donation organizers will practice social distancing procedures and advanced safety protocols. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has stated that the coronavirus (COVID-19) does not pose any known risk to blood donors during the donation process or from attending blood drives, and that it is safe to donate blood. The Asheville Catholic School Shamrock 5K/10K returns on Saturday, March 13 with a format designed to keep us all safe.
Registration
Everyone who is entered and those that cancelled in 2020 for the 5K and 10K have been automatically entered into the 2021 races. There is no need for further action.
Cost: Includes Park admission. Advance registration required.
Chimney Rock is an amazing spot to see spring migrants as they make their way back from the warmer, sunnier regions. Make sure you bring your binoculars to get a peek at numerous species traveling north. Just how many will you add to your list? A Park bird list can be found here. This hike is considered easy-to-moderate and does require advance registration.

The campaign aims to preserve the legacy of the Playhouse, ignite the passion for theatre in the community, and revitalize the arts in Henderson County and beyond. The campaign kicks off with a generous match from David Leiman, meaning donors’ contributions will be matched dollar for dollar up to $118,000.
With the pandemic and government mandates still impacting live event venues, the Playhouse remains dark for the safety of patrons and artists. With performances on hold, the Playhouse has announced a capital campaign, Rock Solid, to preserve the viability of the State Theatre of North Carolina. Donations to this campaign will help to sustain the Playhouse through the following:

Maintain and build back the staff as the Playhouse carefully returns to producing;

Upgrades to technology;
-
Management of the historic facilities and grounds;

Ongoing operational needs; and
-
A “rock solid” infrastructure for long-term sustainability.
- The Rock Solid campaign will be led not only by Playhouse leadership but also by a committee of community members committed to preserving professional performing arts, theatre arts education, and the history of the Playhouse. Dr. Pete and Jan Richards are co-chairing the Campaign Committee. These community members will be sharing their stories about the importance of the arts and their connection to the Playhouse throughout the duration of the campaign.
