“I turned thirty and I was like, ‘What do I want the rest of my life to look like?,'” says Brittany Howard. “Do I want to play the same songs until I’m fifty and then retire, or do I do something that’s scarier for me? Do I want people to understand me and know me, do I want to tell them my story? I’m very private, but my favorite work is when people are being honest and really doing themselves.”
As the frontwoman and guitarist for Alabama Shakes, Howard has become one of music’s most celebrated figures – the band has won four Grammys (out of its nine nominations), and she has performed everywhere from the Obama White House to the main stage at Lollapalooza, where she sang with Paul McCartney at his invitation. But for her solo debut, Jaime, Howard boldly decided to explore new directions, with diverse instrumentation and arrangements and intimate, revelatory lyrics.

This fun and family-friendly lakeside celebration will support The Free Clinics and its unique healthy living program, HealthWays, which makes good health contagious in our community.
Local celebrities, including Superintendent Bo Caldwell, WTZQ’s Mark Warwick & Paige Posey, Vision Henderson County’s Ruth Birge, Major Frank Stout of the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office, and The Free Clinics’s own Judith Long will be lined up on the tossing block where bidders can vie for the chance to push them in the lake. Infamous auction-tainers Duke & Bird will lead the sure-to-be raucous event, awarding the “Early Bird”, “Hot Ticket”, and “Golden Plunger” awards to the “Plungees” who bring in the most donations in advance, at the event, and in total respectively.
Community members who want to see a Plungee “take the plunge” can visit them in person to fill their donation buckets, make contributions online, or on-site at the event. All Plungee and event proceeds will support The Free Clinics and its HealthWays program, a free community health program open to all Henderson and Polk residents.
Event attendees will enjoy wood-fired pizza from Flat Rock Village Bakery, burgers and hot dogs from Kanuga, and a selection of craft beers, cider, and soft drinks. Live music will be provided by Hendersonville’s TNT Band, specializing in popular rock and country oldies. Children will enjoy the lifeguarded splash and play area and face-painting, while all guests can partake in swimming, kayaking, games, and fun photo opportunities.
Plungee Ruth Birge says, “I am so lucky to be included in The Plunge. Who wouldn’t want a chance at winning the “Golden Plunger”?! I mean, what an honor! Really, such fun. By the way, does anyone have a really big inner tube I can use so I won’t have to go all the way under? Yikes!”
“After 14 years working in healthcare in our community, I know someone has longed to push me in the lake. Well, now’s your chance. Give in to that urge…and help our vulnerable neighbors at the same time,” dares TFC’s executive director Judith Long.
Tickets are on sale now for $20 for adults (13yrs+) and $5 for children (5-12 yrs). Children under 5 are free. Family tickets are available for $45 to admit two guardians plus children. My name is Meagan Lucas and I am a Hendersonville-based writer. I’m having a book launch for my debut novel, Songbirds and Stray Dogs, at the new Malaprop’s Pop-Up in downtown Hendersonville.
In Songbirds and Stray Dogs, 21 year old Beaufort waitress, Jolene, has spent the majority of her life living in the shadow of the pain her mother caused, and trying to prove herself worthy of her Aunt’s stingy love. Unintentionally pregnant and abandoned again, Jolene tries to outrun her shame in the mountains of Western North Carolina. Penniless, alone, and chased by demons from her past, she is forced to confront her mother’s legacy, and her own fear. Song Birds and Stray Dogs is a Southern story, born of sweet tea and the Bible Belt, chow-chow and cornbread, shot guns and porch rocking. But it is also a universal story of escaping the burden of your past and finding yourself at home in a strange land.

Fronted by eclectic guitarist-vocalist, Paul Edelman, Jangling Sparrows’ most recent release 140 Nickels was voted a “Best Indie Album” selection by the L.A. Music Critic Awards, who added, “Watch for these guys near the top of the Americana music scene!”. 140 Nickels has received stellar reviews from national publications No Depression, The Alternate Root, Music Connection and more, plus extended national/international airplay.
The group’s latest single “Highway Jawn” was described by Indie Pulse Music as “fun, rich and dynamic…Paul Edelman and Jangling Sparrows take their sound to the limit and bring you into their world, with a country, blues, rock and folk-inspired sound that captures the listener and takes them on a wild hay ride.

This comedy is often viewed as Shaw’s wittiest play! This is a borderline farce that will stimulate serious thinking about the nature of both romance and war. What is Raina to do when she finds that an enemy soldier has taken refuge in her room? What will her fiancée say? The plot, of course, thickens! Directed by Jim Reid and performed as Readers Theatre as a part of The Autumn Players’ Readers Theatre Showcase Series.
