Embedded within the names of many yoga poses there are intricate and ancient Indian myths and stories. These stories answer timeless questions about our human nature and serve as a compass in the complexities of navigating the human experience. Myths help us make sense of the world and may offer insights into our personal experience with the sacred. Modern yoga has been mostly connected to its physical benefits, however when we explore the mythological nature of yoga and learn about some of these heroic figures, we may connect to our psyche and the divine. As Joseph Campbell wrote in his book The Power of Myth, “Mythology is not a lie, mythology is poetry; it is metaphorical. It has been well said that mythology is the penultimate truth…”
Come and explore with Joe Taft an experience of a fun yoga practice interwoven with the perennial truths found in these ancient mythologies. Joe Taft has been studying India’s fabulous mythological heritage with renowned yoga scholars for nearly two decades. Joe’s enjoyment of these stories is contagious. He will conduct this workshop in such a way as to provide a deeper knowledge of the divine Gods and Goddesses so that you will have fun discovering which ones resonate with you and how these mythic figures are alive in each of us to a greater or lesser degree. Joe promises an uplifting and playful asana practice interwoven with these stories as empowering metaphors. All levels are welcome!

Gary Machlis presents The Future of Conservation in America: A Chart for Rough Water. A Special Founders Day Celebration of National Parks
This is a turbulent time for the conservation of America’s natural and cultural heritage. From the current assaults on environmental protection to the threats of climate change, biodiversity loss, and disparity of environmental justice, the challenges facing the conservation movement are both immediate and long term. In this time of uncertainty, we need a clear and compelling guide for the future of conservation in America, a declaration to inspire the next generation of conservation leaders. This is that guide–what the authors describe as “a chart for rough water.”
Written by the first scientist appointed as science advisor to the director of the National Park Service and the eighteenth director of the National Park Service, this is a candid, passionate, and ultimately hopeful book. The authors describe a unified vision of conservation that binds nature protection, historical preservation, sustainability, public health, civil rights and social justice, and science into common cause–and offer real-world strategies for progress. To be read, pondered, debated, and often revisited, The Future of Conservation in America is destined to be a touchstone for the conservation movement in the decades ahead.
Gary E. Machlis is a professor of environmental sustainability at Clemson University and former science adviser to the director of the National Park Service.

The Beloved Comedy Fantasy Comes The Capitol’s Screen This August
The Capitol Theater of Greeneville, Tennessee continues their popular Classics At The Capitol Series with their August selection of the beloved 1987 comedy The Princess Bride. This classic romantic adventure will play at The Capitol August 25th at 7:00PM. Tickets will be only $5.00 and can be purchased at the box office or online.
Directed by Rob Riner and based upon William Goldman’s 1973 novel of the same name, The Princess Bride stars: Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Mandy Patinkin, Chris Sarandon, Wallace Shawn, André the Giant, and Christopher Guest. This family favorite was well received by critics upon its original release in 1987 but was not a hit at the box office. Over time it’s grown into his rightful reputation as a beloved classic.
The Princess Bride tells the story of a farmhand who must rescue his true love, along with the help of friends, from an evil prince–and the adventure that happens along the way to complete his quest. The Princess Bride will be introduced by local film writer Andy Ross, he says “This is one of those movies that shows just how much time is the true test of any film, not box office success. This is a classic example of that, even shown as recently as 2016 when the film was added to The National Film Registry. I’m so looking forward to sharing this with everyone at The Capitol this August.”

Laura Blackley is a singer, songwriter and purveyor of high lonesome Appalachian blues and soul. She was an on-air host and producer for seven years at WNCW 88.7 FM in Spindale, NC, spotlighting regional music, women in roots music, and bluegrass and old-time. She currently works (in addition to her gig schedule) as a Teaching Artist with Musicworks!, a program that utilizes music and musicianship to teach life skills to young children. A born storyteller, she has played in many bands, traveled many back roads and interstates and enjoys digging up old tunes and hearing the stories behind them. She believes that music has a healing power and is a communal act, and is very much looking forward to the next gig.

Ian Harrod is a singer, songwriter, guitar, and bass player. Known for playing bass in The Honeycutters, Velvet Truckstop, Ride With Daddy, and 176 as well as many other projects. His solo show is usually him on guitar singing a mix of originals and his favorite songs. He mostly covers 70s rock with a bit of soul, bluegrass, and jazz. But his originals are either an abstract story painting kind of song or something about universal truth and love. With a smooth easy to listen to voice and developed guitar style, you are sure to fall in love with the muse as it flows through him.

HEAR SOME MUSIC: https://milesnielsen.bandcamp.com
SEE A VIDEO: https://youtu.be/CPxz26ZMyHw
For Miles Nielsen, every experience, every conversation, every dream is a potential song in the making. Miles’s songs breathe with a sense of yearning and ownership. You want to have another record, another song- you want to hit rewind…you want to know more about this world created in song by Mr. Nielsen A captivating wordsmith, instrumentalist, and creator of hooks- rare indeed, but present in the person of Miles Nielsen. There are very few people writing music that makes you immediately wish there was “more”- another song to make you turn up the volume , another nugget of melody or lyric that you can find some part of to make your own. Gifts like Miles’s come along very infrequently, and one can only hope that his ability to be so “in the now” -listening for the songs spoken in the everyday world, will continue to grow. Then maybe that “more” we are looking for, will be given to us all… in the songs of Miles Nielsen.
