About Newberry & Verch:
Joe Newberry grew up in a family full of singers and dancers. He took up the guitar and banjo as a teenager and learned fiddle tunes from great Missouri fiddlers. April Verch grew up listening to her Dad’s country band play for dances in the Ottawa Valley. She started step dancing at age three and fiddling at age six. Both Newberry & Verch became masters of their traditions and tour the world with their respective bands and projects. Yet they never forget the roots of their music, that connection to the people in the audience, on the dance floor, to the community sparked by a good song.

For these veteran performers who come from distinct traditions and parts of the world, their collaboration is fueled by their kindred passion for bringing people together to celebrate traditional music. Blues and ballads stem into Canadian regional styles and originals. Their voices blend in harmony, their tasteful instrumentals prove that these masters have nothing left to prove, and then their feet kick up the dust in perfect rhythm…and together, they make you remember why this music existed in the first place.

The program will be performed twice on December 9, 2018, in the intimate Folk Art Center. Tickets are limited! General admission is $25 for this special event. Friends will limited to ONE FriendPass ticket per household/group, but will be able to purchase additional tickets for only $15 each. Student tickets are also $15. Because only one FriendPass ticket can be used per household, it is not possible to deliver your tickets to your FriendPass for this concert.

This program is supported by the North Carolina Arts Council, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.

Inclement Weather Plan:
Weather-related information about the concerts will be recorded on the BRO Weather Information phone line (828.351.4014) by 11am on Sunday, December 9. Please call to verify the time, location, and status of the concerts before traveling.

If the Folk Art Center closes but area roads are relatively clear, we will relocate to Biltmore United Methodist Church (376 Hendersonville Rd in Asheville) for a single performance at 3:30pm. All tickets will be honored at this performance.

If the weather necessitates cancelling the concerts completely, we will refund all tickets.

When reflecting on the current state of the environment, it seems that we have entered into times of seismic sorrows. Carbon emissions, water pollution, fracking, and changing climate patterns all point to a troubling reality with serious consequences for human and non-human populations. Through weavings, installations, sculpture, and print, artists Rena Detrixhe and Tali Weinberg (Tulsa, OK) explore the complex relationship between humans and the planet, offering insights, expressing grief, and creating space for resilience and change.

In Time of Seismic Sorrows is curated by Marilyn Zapf and organized by the Center for Craft. The Center for Craft is supported in part by the N.C. Arts Council, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.

Winter can be the most beautiful time of the year at Chimney Rock. Leafless trees make for expansive views of Lake Lure and the Hickory Nut Gorge. The sky is clear; you’re likely to find a quiet spot to sit and enjoy the peacefulness. You may even see a critter scamper by you in the forest. Capture that special moment or scene on your camera, enter it in our Winter Wonders Photo Contest and tell us about it. We’ll use the winning entries on our website and Facebook album, and you’ll win some fun prizes. Photos must be taken within the Chimney Rock section of the Park.

We are honored to share our passion for our Beloved Black Bears in our exhibit at the “FW Gallery” in Woolworth Walk – downtown Asheville. We are grateful to have been chosen to be their Featured Artists. We want to also thank the many lovely people who work at Woolworth Walk and have supported and assisted us with the exhibit.

The FW Gallery exhibit will end Tuesday, January 29th at 6pm. Our permanent artist booth #229 downstairs “Beloved Black Bear” has over 50 black bear canvases 11×14 at $75 each. We hope you will stop by to visit.

We are happy to say that many black bear canvases have been sold and are now adorning many homes. Our wish is for all of us to share our compassion for the black bear with our friends, family, and neighbors and create connections with the bears giving them a voice.

The Junior League of Asheville is excited to announce a new monthly education series: JLA LEAD: Leadership Education & Development. Starting in January, we will have monthly* professional development & networking events that are not only geared towards training our members, but will also be open to the public.

Our first JLA LEAD event will be on Monday, January 14th at 6pm at MOJO Coworking. The theme of the event is “How to Find Your Dream Job Where You Live, and Negotiate a Salary You Deserve.” Starting at 5:30pm will enjoy networking, snacks, and beverages, and the talk will start at 6pm. The talk will last about 45 minutes with time for a Q&A. This presentation will be lead by Lauren Karlsson, who has more than eight years of experience in both recruiting and job coaching and will be sharing some of her methods to boost your job search, networking, and salary negotiation confidence!

Having a home, living indoors, is a basic human right, one that 500 or more individuals do not have on any given night in the Asheville area alone.

Finding Home, a collection of songs, new and found monologues, scenes, and dance will tell the true stories of our neighbors who have lived for years without a home and through the work of Homeward Bound have been able to feel safe and supported for the first time in their lives.

Created and Directed by Candice Dickinson, Finding Home is an immersive show staged in promenade and she asks the audience to anticipate some movement during the performance.

Lake James Environmental Association invites you to come out to Catawba Brewing Company in downtown Morganton for our annual meeting on January 14th, 2019. We are pleased to announce that our guest speaker will be local historian Denise Bishop, who will be discussing “What Lies Beneath Lake James,” a history of Lake James, the communities that now lie beneath its waters, and the families that lived there. LJEA will also be unveiling the State of the Lake James Watershed Report, which will be the basis for LJEA’s work in the watershed for the next 5-10 years. Catawba Brewing will be donating $1 per beer sold that evening to LJEA, so come out and enjoy a beer and support the organization at the same time!

Learn East Coast Swing & Night Club 2: Starts Mon. January 7th

Time get out and have some fun. Learn East Coast Swing timing, patterns and cool moves that will have anyone looking good on the dance floor. East Coast Swing is a great foundation for other swing dances (West Coast, Shag, Blues Dancing) and a great way to meet new people with your own interests.

Club Dance Class also includes an introduction to Night Club 2, a beautiful romantic dance, bringing style and grace to those wonderful slow songs.

This 4 week pole and chair dance choreography focused series is perfect for those looking to add to their repertoire of pole tricks and skills to create performance quality movement – or just to learn something fun and new! Students will learn dance moves and combinations utilizing the chair and pole, and smoothing transitions between the two. No dance experience required but pole experience is a must – appropriate for pole level 3+. Heels encouraged.
