Jerry Joseph And The Jackmormons
w/ Daniel Hutchens (of Bloodkin)
November 6, 2018
Weird Blood is Jerry Joseph’s third album released in as many years with his band the Jackmormons, Steve Drizos on drums and Steven James Wright on bass, and produced by Dave Schools (J Mascis and the Fog, Hard Working Americans, Stockholm Syndrome). Glide Magazine premieres the album opener, “Sweet Baba Jay”, “reminiscent of Elvis Costello but with more of a defiant punk edge… the song taps into a sort of UK pub rock glory, but with Josephâs own unique and vivid storytelling at the helm.” Read and listen here.
In 2015, Joseph and the Jackmormons went into TRI Studios with Dave Schools and walked out with 20 songs. Those songs became the albums Istanbul/Fog Of War (10/2015) and By The Time Your Rocket Gets to Mars (4/2016). The plan was to release a third album, an EP, with the remaining three finished songs supplemented by couple of new songs that Joseph would write. The plan went sideways.
I rented a tiny house about a mile from my home so I could write but be home for dinner and kid bedtime. I ended up writing a fistful of songs. It was cold early January but a perfect place to write. Weird stuff was happening in general, one of those weeks where I had my copy of Black Star and David Bowie died, Joseph recalls. I tend to do the mad scribble thing when I write.
When after a week of writing, Joseph arrived at Jackpot Studios, Schools was adamant they record all the new songs. They also recorded a couple written in Scotland, Sweet Baba Jay and Late Heavy Bombardment and a few that theyve been performing, but had never recorded. The past few years weve been trying to figure out album slots for some of the hundred originals that are part of our live repertoire but have never been recorded, like Wild Wild West which has been around since the late 90s, remarks Joseph. The tiny house songs became the core of Weird Blood.
âWhen I write in a flurry like that, it’s hard to see a thread. It feels more like a purge than a considered attempt at art but in the end I seem to get to stuff that I can’t get to when I’m thinking too hard.
So here is the ârecorded during a massive snow storm at Jackpot Studiosâ record. âThere was a lot of blood, it was pretty weird,â I don’t even know where that came from, scribbled on something, and turned into a uncomfortable song.â
The prolific writer has released more than 30 records and has a catalog of over 250 original songs and counting. Joseph has always stayed busy on the road, not only touring the US but also far-flung, under-explored locales. In the past couple years he has traveled to war-torn regions to bring supplies and teach and share music. In 2015 he brought instruments and volunteered as a music instructor at an underground co-ed rock school in Kabul, Afghanistan. This Spring, he brought guitars and supplies and taught and performed for the residents of a permanent refugee camp in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.
“For me, it was pretty profound. There were these teenage girls learning to play, Syrian Kurds. I wonder sometimes about the power or magic of music, but we certainly attach a lot to it. I think that there are these moments that Iâve found where music does make a difference. Showing these kids how to play a few guitar chords or teaching them ‘Three Little Birds’ by Bob Marley and teaching them about empowerment. It doesn’t matter if itâs clay or dance shoes, no one can take it away from you. They can take the guitar or the paint, but they canât take your creative thinking. A lot of these kids and adults feel isolated and alone, and you go, ‘Here [hand them a guitar and a social media account], Youâre not alone. Youâre part of something beautiful and bigger.'”

Daniel has been writing, recording, and performing his songs professionally since 1994. He has recorded and toured solo, as well as with his rock n roll band Bloodkin. He has also toured and recorded with Moe Tucker and Sterling Morrison of the Velvet Underground, appeared onstage with Lou Reed, Mike Mills, Government Mule, Allen Ginsberg, Drive-By Truckers, and the touring giants Widespread Panic (who have also recorded and regularly perform several Hutchens compositions). He has co-written songs with Widespread Panic, Jerry Joseph, David Barbe, and more. He has recorded with Johnny Sandlin, Roger Hawkins and David Hood of Muscle Shoals fame, John Keane, and David Barbe (eight records and counting).
Officially-released Hutchens compositions now number over 200, and counting unreleased material, the song catalogue has now passed 500 titles. Hutchens plans to release a book of lyrics, as well as a book of selected poems, journal entries and essays in 2018.
Justin Gage of AQUARIUM DRUNKARD has written of Daniel, “I put his catalog right up there with the likes of Townes Van Zandt, Alejandro Escovedo and Steve Earle in terms of truly capturing the nuances of humanity, both the light and the dark, in song…[Hutchens] is a national treasure.”
David Fricke wrote in ROLLING STONE that “There may be no better description of America’s original family values than Hutchens’ reference in the acid-country jangle of ‘Rhododendron’ to ‘A touch of Old Testament iron/And a whiff of wild rhododendron.’ ”
Stephen M. Deusner wrote of Hutchens’ songwriting in PITCHFORK: “As if the legacy of Faulkner or even the Beats were alive on vinyl rather than in ink.”
Bassist/producer Dave Schools said in Popmatters, “I’ve been very lucky…to work with genius songwriters like the guys in Widespread Panic, Vic Chesnutt, Jerry Joseph, Danny Hutchens, and Todd Snider. Their ability to render their emotions in words blows my mind on a daily basis.”
The newest Daniel Hutchens record, THE BEAUTIFUL VICIOUS CYCLE OF LIFE, was released on April 22, 2016. Produced by Widespread Panic’s Dave Schools and engineered by David Barbe, the release also features musicians Dave Schools, Duane Trucks, David Barbe, Jesse Aycock, Frank MacDonnell, Todd Nance, William Tonks, Eric Carter, and Thayer Sarrano.

In addition to being a successful touring comedian, Emma is the cofounder and artistic director of the 208 Comedyfest, the codirector of Comedyfort (part of the Treefort Festival), as well as a mother of three and third generation beekeeper. She was named Jackie and Laurie’s “Comic of the Week” in 2018, and needs literally nothing else from life after that. Her self-released comedy special, “Yes, Please”, is available on her website and you should watch it, it’s fun. When not touring, Emma lives in Idaho, where she keeps kids and bees with varying degrees of success.

Reclaimed Creations is a unique sculpture exhibit created by renowned artist Sayaka Ganz. Utilizing reclaimed plastic objects, such as discarded utensils, Ganz creates amazing sculptures that visually appear unified at a distance, but are in fact separated when examined up close. Described as using a “3D impressionistic” style, Ganz’s exhibit includes installations of animals in motion, which are in rich in color and energy, to create an illusion of form.
About the Artist
Born in Yokohama, Japan, Sayaka Ganz grew up living in Japan, Brazil and Hong Kong. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Indiana University, Bloomington, and a Master of Fine Arts degree in sculpture from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. A lecturer and teacher, Ganz’s work has been displayed at various institutions around the globe, including the Hermann Geiger Foundation in Cecina, Italy, the Isle Gallery in Isle of Man, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California.
My work is about perceiving harmony, even in situations that appear chaotic from the inside. When observing my sculptures up close, one might see gaps, holes and items being held on only by small points; step away, however, and the sculptures reveal the harmony created when the objects are aligned to the same general (but not identical) direction. Similarly, it is important to gain perspective by stepping back from current problems and look at the larger picture. Then one can perceive the beauty and patterns that exist.”

Hours: Tuesday through Saturday, 10am – 4pm
This beautiful exhibit celebrates the works of photographer Lauren Rutten and quilter Kari Morton. What these two artists share in common are a partnership in the five-woman, artist-owned Flow Gallery in historic downtown Marshall, and a deep love of Madison County, their newly chosen home.
In 2015, Lauren and her husband Andy, traveled the US for one year searching for a home. “From the very moment I arrived in Marshall while on this journey, I had a sense of having dreamt of this place since childhood – I knew this was where I wanted to be.
I have found that my life here is not confined within four walls, so I’m very interested in reflections, when the light shines through a structure, or a barn begins to dilapidate so the outside and inside merge.
Marshall finds itself in a season of change. Many families who are moving here to homestead live alongside families who have farmed here for generations. This collection hopes to show the range of those who have come to call Marshall home, as well as the hard reality of homesteading and its immense beauty, which are in direct relationship with each other here. In this land I dig my hands in the earth and muddy my feet on the ground, while at the same time experiencing the transcendence of being and connecting to so much beyond my body. I hope those who view these photos might experience this too.”
Kari and her husband, Mike, moved to Madison County in 2012, after having lived a fairly nomadic life. They decided Madison County was the place to put down roots and call home.
“This collection is inspired by my immediate world, the things I live with and the things I see – the garden in my front yard, the chickens in the back yard, the buildings in downtown Marshall, where I spend many hours working at Flow and serving as a guardian ad litem in the county courthouse. Each of my pieces tell a story of connection, to my community, to my world. I love sharing this part of myself with others.”
Flow Gallery is located on Main Street in the historic, picturesque town of Marshall, which lies along the French Broad River, just 25 minutes north of Asheville, NC. The gallery is in its 8th year of business and showcases the work of over 65 talented, regional artists.
When reflecting on the current state of the environment, it seems that we have entered into times of seismic sorrows. Carbon emissions, water pollution, fracking, and changing climate patterns all point to a troubling reality with serious consequences for human and non-human populations. Through weavings, installations, sculpture, and print, artists Rena Detrixhe and Tali Weinberg (Tulsa, OK) explore the complex relationship between humans and the planet, offering insights, expressing grief, and creating space for resilience and change.
In Time of Seismic Sorrows is curated by Marilyn Zapf and organized by the Center for Craft. The Center for Craft is supported in part by the N.C. Arts Council, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.

The Haen Gallery, located in downtown Asheville, North Carolina, is proud to present their 12th Annual Lynn Boggess Exhibition. The exhibit will run through November.
Lynn Boggess is one of the most unique and noteworthy American landscape painters of the 21st Century. He resides in West Virginia, a state whose diverse mountains, forests, and rivers provide abundant inspiration for the artist’s plein air paintings. In place of brushes he uses palette knives and trowels to thickly layer the broad sweeping strokes and exquisite fine detail that capture all the colors of the seasons in rushing rivers, snow covered hillsides, and thick forest vegetation. Mr. Boggess’ work is recognized internationally for its incredible three-dimensional texture, rendered solely in oils. These remarkable paintings combine elements of Abstract Expressionism and Photorealism to create a style that is totally unique and original.
The Haen Gallery in Asheville is located at 52 Biltmore Avenue between City Bakery and Chestnut. There is a parking garage at the Aloft hotel across the street, another garage just up the hill, as well as street parking.
The gallery is open Monday through Saturday 11am-6pm & Sunday 12-5pm. For more information: 828-254-8577 or www.thehaengallery.com. Gallery contacts: Chris Foley, Director; Leslie Logemann, Gallery Manager.
With locations in Asheville and Brevard, The Haen Gallery offers the work of established artists whose distinctive and unique style sets it apart from ordinary and imitative efforts. Visit the website at thehaengallery.com.
