Departing from Bryson City, this 4 hour excursion travels 32 miles round-trip to Dillsboro and back to the Bryson City Depot. Pass by the famous movie set of The Fugitive starring Harrison Ford!

The Tuckasegee (tuck-uh-SEE-jee) River Excursion includes an 1½ hour layover in the historic town of Dillsboro, where you’ll find more than 50 shops, restaurants, bed and breakfasts and country inns. There is time to shop, snack, and visit the many unique shops before returning to Bryson City.

The Sowing Circle Series will hold a free Zoom presentation on identifying and preventing common invasive plants in WNC.  

Non-native invasive plants introduced into North Carolina are causing problems for our native plant and animal species. These plants are taking over our natural areas, parks, forests, urban environments, yards, and gardens. We have invited Barb Harrison, Buncombe County Extension Master Gardener, to teach you how to recognize and identify the most common invasive plants in our area and how to reduce their spread.

Designing a landscape is like creating a sculpture that we walk through.  We are shaping space.  What does the design of that space contribute to a satisfying experience in the garden?  On the other hand, what detracts from it?

During this talk, we will explore design fundamentals such as scale, balance, coherence, context, texture, and color.  We will review the landscape design process, starting with the all-important site assessment.  Insights gleaned from both successes and failures will be salted throughout the presentation.

Join a guided tour of Historic Oakdale Cemetery, Hendersonville’s municipal cemetery which whispers stories of the town’s early days. The famous Italian marble monument which inspired the title of Thomas Wolfe’s novel Look Homeward, Angel is in Oakdale, along with both marked and unmarked graves of historic figures. The heritage of the local African-American community is told in the Black section of the cemetery, while the designated Jewish cemetery reveals how the town grew to embrace ethnic and religious groups through the years. How and why the cemetery was created, names of those who helped build the town and where they were laid to rest, where the Sunshine Lady is buried, and more questions will be answered. The walk will begin at 10 a.m. in the cemetery, two miles west of downtown on U.S. 64 at Valley St. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, space is limited and reservations are required. Participants should wear a cloth face covering. Phone history walk leader Mary Jo Padgett at 828-545-3179 to make a reservation. Private tours for small groups can be arranged anytime.

GHOSTED: COMEDY WALKING TOUR

COVID has postponed our bus tours, but it won’t stop us from laughing! Our brand new experience is an up tempo theatrical walking tour of haunted Asheville. You and 13 others will depart from the LaZoom Room and follow an undead guide through Asheville’s creepy streets in search of window into the past. Along the way, we’ll encounter real ghosts that will have you jumping out of your skin. Not really! Or really? Take the tour and find out!

Meander through this historic part of town encircling the old Railroad Depot. When the first steam locomotive arrived in Hendersonville on July 4, 1879, crammed with tourists and visitors from the low country of South Carolina, it was the beginning of an exciting era of big-band music, dancing, numerous inns and hotels, much real estate trading, and huge agricultural growth. Money was made and lost, famous musicians and sports figures came calling, delicious food was enjoyed at every inn and boarding house … Hendersonville was in its hey-day from that moment until the financial crash of 1929. This neighborhood boasted many businesses run by Black and white owners. Let’s hear about it. The walk will start at 10 a.m. at the front steps of City Hall, corner of Fifth Avenue E. and King St. . Due to COVID-19 restrictions, space is limited and reservations are required. Participants should wear a cloth face covering. Art in Bloom pairs art that has been created in a range of media with creative floral displays inspired by the artwork, and idea that came from the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.  On the remaining dates, Saturday, September 26 & Sunday, September 27, this event is free and open to view during the Gallery at Flat Rock’s normal operating hours.

The preview party will be structured for social distancing, with limits on the number of people inside the gallery at any one time at this event and during the open viewing hours on Saturday & Sunday.
