RAFFLE for a customized native pollinator garden
(location must be in Buncombe County or adjacent)
Winner will receive a fully installed 10 ft X 10 ft native pollinator garden (valued at $1,500).

Farm Beginnings® is training the next generation of farmers in the many skills required to start and expand a successful farm business: passion, clear goals, production experience, financial and marketing know-how, and more. Farm Beginnings® will help you build these skills through one year of farmer-led training, mentoring, and networking. We support individuals in clarifying their goals and strengths, developing agricultural skills, and growing profitable, equitable, and ecologically sound farm businesses. We use a holistic management frame, farmer-led classroom sessions, on-farm tours, mentoring, and an extensive farmer network. The topics of equity and justice in the food systems are woven into the curriculum, including examples of realistic approaches within the scope of your business models. Guided by our commitment to social justice, our programming is led by farmers and mentors active in food, farming, or social justice. By empowering people with skills, knowledge, and access to resources, together we can build a more diverse, equitable food system that enriches the environment and creates a thriving food and farming community.
Although students do not need to own land, some farming or production experience is required to get the most out of the program.

Journeyperson Program
Early bird discount: $100 off if you apply by September 1st, 2022.
The Journeyperson Program is designed for farmers who have been independently farming for three or more years and are serious about operating farm businesses in the Southern Appalachian region. This program will give you the space and time to work on your business while making connections that deepen your peer-to-peer support.
Qualifications
Eligible applicants have:
- A minimum of three years independently farming
- A demonstrated commitment to farming in the Southern Appalachian region
- Production goals of feeding their community and region
- A demonstrated commitment to sustainable practices
Although not required, The Journeyperson Program is best suited for applicants that have the following:
- Secure medium to long-term land tenure (such as owned land or a lease contract)
- A focus on livestock and/or crop production for direct-to-consumer and/or wholesale markets
- An established farm business that needs support to refine their vision, apply whole-farm planning practices and willingness to fully utilize the resources of the program
Program Components:
OGS offers you a comprehensive package of support over 12 months:

Soil test kits and information about the EMG Learning Garden activities and Gardening in the Mountains seminars will be available! Please stop by to learn more!

After a two year hiatus, the Extension Master GardenerSMPlant Clinics are back and in-person at Asheville City Market. Formerly known as Info Tables, Master Gardener volunteers will be at the Asheville City Market, located at 52 N. Market Street, Asheville, NC 28801 on May 28, June 25, July 30, and August 27 to answers to all of your gardening questions and address your concerns.
Feel free to bring plant or insect samples for identification and/or problem resolution. You can pick-up soil test kits and receive information about activities at The Learning Garden and Gardening in the Mountains seminars. Please stop by to learn more!
The Urban Garden Tour is FREE and open to everyone! Seven local food producing gardens will open their gates for visitors, educational activities and tours. There is no cost to visit the gardens. Local chefs will be preparing small bites for sampling and local (nonalcoholic) drinks will be available. Register below to join the tour and to purchase food and beverage tickets. To sample at every garden, tickets are $35 in advance. You will receive a tasting punch card when you check in at the West Asheville Park Pavilion.
Here is a link to a bike route created by Asheville On Bikes on their Ride with GPS App for folks who would like to take the self guided tour by bicycle. Many of the gardens are quite close together, so walking is also an option. Our goal is to raise awareness about urban agriculture and long-term food security solutions in uplifting the work of organizations, businesses, and nonprofits. We want to celebrate all we can grow with inclusivity, collaboration and a low carbon footprint.

Participating Gardens include Lucy S. Herring Elementary School Garden, Sunny Point Cafe Garden, The People’s Plot Community Garden at West Asheville Park, Peace Gardens and Market at Bryant St., Hall Fletcher Elementary School Garden, Elder and Sage Community Garden, and Bountiful Cities Pearson Garden.
Ticket holders will get to sample unique creations and confections from The Hop Ice Cream, OWL Bakery, East Fork Pottery Chefs, Stony Hill Bistro, Nani’s Piri Piri Chicken, Chai Pani, Chef Camille Cogswell of Walnut Family Bakery, Sunny Point Cafe, Chef Steve Goff with Tastee Diner, Everyday Gourmet, and more.

Developed by Fairies and dedicated volunteers, Bullington Gardens’ Fairy Trail is a whimsical treat for the young and the young at heart. Featuring charming vignettes and villages, the fairy trail will charm you with its thoughtful design, eye catching displays and secret woodland trail.
Rules of the trail:
Do not move or rearrange fairy displays. The fairies are very fond of their own decorating.
Do not leave trash on the trail. Fairies do not like litter in their town.
Please ensure children and pets are supervised at all times. Dogs and loud noises can scare the fairies into hiding.
Do not disturb wildlife or vegetation. The fairies depend on the vegetation to build their homes.
The trail is one way only. Please stay on the trail at all times.

Each year, Asheville GreenWorks plants more than 1,000 trees as part of our commitment to restore Asheville’s tree canopy. However, we can’t do it without the help of our volunteers. Each year hundreds of tree lovers dedicate a day (or more) to potting, planting, or caring for the saplings that will keep urban Asheville cool and green now and in the future.
You are welcome to schedule a specific workday for your group or to join one of our public workdays every Tuesday from April to July from 10am-12pm. |

An entire group can register or you can sign up as an individual. We will alternate between School Garden Trainings and Farm to Preschool Trainings. See below for the descriptions, dates, and times. Trainings are held via Zoom.

The Journeyperson Program is designed for farmers who have been independently farming for three or more years and are serious about operating farm businesses in the Southern Appalachian region. This program will give you the space and time to work on your business while making connections that deepen your peer-to-peer support.
