Blood Moon: The Magic of Lunar Eclipses
Nov 28 @ 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm
YWCA of Asheville

On the evening of Sunday, January 20th, observers in the Americas are well positioned to experience a total lunar eclipse – the first seen in Asheville since September 2015.

Since the dawn of humankind, we have gazed up at the Earth’s only natural satellite – our Moon – with a sense of enchantment and wonder. How strange it must have seemed to past civilizations when this constant celestial companion suddenly darkened and glowed in shades of copper and blood! What for them was often a terrifying experience is, for modern humans, a thing of beauty to be witnessed at least once.

This presentation will explore why lunar (and solar) eclipses happen, including why they don’t occur more often, and how ancient cultures explained these mysterious events. Finally, we will describe what to expect during the evening of January 20th, 2019, and we’ll offer some observing tips to best see this magical spectacle.

Dominic Lesnar was first drawn to the night sky as an adolescent, exploring the universe from his backyard in Las Vegas, NV. More than forty years later, he remains captivated by an evening under the stars. A resident of WNC since 1991, he has served as president of the Astronomy Club of Asheville since 2015.

An Evening with Tough Old Bird
Nov 28 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm
Isis Music Hall

Formed in the small community of Fillmore, New York by songwriting brothers Matthew and Nathan Corrigan, Tough Old Bird plays modern folk music that reflects the landscape it comes from, a place where the last train just pulled out and the carnival is always on its way to the next town.

Since its formation in 2013, Tough Old Bird has taken its music to bars, festivals, coffee shops, music clubs and radio stations all over the United States. Tough Old Bird’s latest release, “Where The Great Beasts Are Buried,” a new collection of sparse songs recorded at home, is available now.

The core of Tough Old Bird’s sound comes from Matthew Corrigan’s intricate acoustic guitar work, and from the voice and nimble harmonica playing of Nathan Corrigan, who holds a degree in literature and brings a poetic sensibility to the duo’s lyrics. Accents of accordion and waves of electric guitar give Tough Old Bird a sound that is at once modern and ancient.

About Spirals in Contact:
After studying and training with The Axis Syllabus for the couple years, Aaron has begun to grasp that there is not a straight line to be found in the human body, nor in the ways that the body moves. We are twisting, spiraling beings, and our movement pathways can resemble that of a fish, or a tornado, or a falling leaf… Finding spirals in contact improv duets opens doors to ease, safety, and the harnessing and recycling of momentum. Come take your spine for a drive. Beginners welcome!

Please wear loose, comfortable clothing, natural fibers preferred. Avoid earrings and jewelry, and out of respect for those with sensitivity, no scents please.

SUSTO Stories: An intimate acoustic show with Justin Osborne of SUSTO at The Grey Eagle

“In the early days of SUSTO I was touring almost completely solo, and the shows had a vibe that was very personal and there was an environment that encouraged me to tell the stories behind my songs. In the past two years I’ve been able to do tours like this in Europe, but haven’t had a chance to do something similar in the US. This tour is meant to remedy that, and to recreate that atmosphere I used to love so much, that intimacy with the audience. I’m looking forward to being there again, and seeing what comes out.”
