The Henderson County Chamber of Commerce and Pardee UNC Health Care, along with Morris Broadband and Judy Stroud – State Farm Insurance, are pleased to announce the 14th Annual ATHENA Award of Henderson County in memory of Vanessa, Y. Mintz. Nominations are now open for the 2021 ATHENA award, which will be presented at the Professional Women’s Luncheon, tentatively scheduled for May, to an exemplary leader who has achieved excellence in their business or profession, served the community in a meaningful way, and, most importantly, actively assisted women to achieve their full leadership potential.
ATHENA International is a women’s leadership organization that supports, develops, and honors women leaders through the programs it administers. Vanessa Y. Mintz brought the ATHENA award to Henderson County in 2008 and she embodied the values underlying ATHENA International’s philosophy of incorporating the talent and expertise of women into the leadership of our businesses, our communities, and our government. This program is facilitated locally by the Henderson County Chamber of Commerce as a licensed ATHENA host organization.
Nominations are sought throughout the community. Recipients are selected by a diverse group of out-of-town professional judges, based on ATHENA leadership criteria. Those interested in nominating should plan to tell their compelling story as if to a stranger. The deadline for nomination is Friday, April 2 at 5:00 pm. ASAP’s annual Business of Farming Conference, held virtually in 2021, brings together professional and aspiring farmers from across the Southeast to network and share resources to build viable farm businesses. Farmers will learn about marketing, business planning, branding, and management from regional experts and innovative peers. Within the virtual format, attendees will have the opportunity to meet, connect, and form supportive relationships. The popular Grower-Buyer Meeting, a chance for farmers to meet directly with grocers, distributors, and chefs to discuss sourcing, will return in virtual form as well. The conference is designed for beginning and established farmers as well as those seriously considering farming as a profession. One Buncombe Launches Monday
Attention “Gig” Workers! – This grant program will support COVID-19 affected Buncombe County-based small businesses re-open and rehire Living Wage employees. It is designed to support businesses who have had a hard time accessing relief grant capital and will prioritize funding people of color-owned, woman-owned, and sole-proprietor businesses.
The mission of the grant funds is to support COVID-19 affected Buncombe County-based small businesses in their ability to re-open and rehire employees.
The One Buncombe Grant Fund helps small for-profit businesses reopen and rehire staff through grants. Please note that funds are limited and not all who apply will be awarded. The eligible grant amount will be based on firm size:
- Up to $2,500 for solopreneurs or single-member organizations
- Up to $5,000 for firms with up to 25 full-time equivalent employees

Program Timeline
- February 8: The application window opens
- All applications completed and submitted before the deadline will be considered equally. There is no benefit to rushing an application.
- February 8: Self-scheduled one-on-one application assistance opens
- February 9:The first webinar will take place at 2 pm

We will meet at the Ingles on Tunnel Road. I’m not that familiar with this Ingles, but if there is a gas station at this Ingles please park over by it. I have a white Hyundai and will stand outside the car. Suggested car pool donation will be $2-$3 each as this is not a far drive to the trailhead.
Meeting time is 9:45 with a departure of 10 a.m.
We will then drive out to Warren Wilson to the trailhead which is in a parking area for one of the living areas. Parking is at a minimum so car pool if you can. If carpooling, please wear a mask in your driver’s car and sanitize your hands.
Once we arrive at the trailhead we will meander through the woods. I haven’t done this trail for probably 4 years so I hope it will all come back. But you might want to plan on a few mishaps and a retracing of steps.
We start out gradually uphill, will past through a dark forest with trees planted in rows, find the trail that goes down hill for a least half a mile, turn left and head towards Swannanoa River, walk up to a man made lake, retrace our steps, head towards the agricultural area of WW, turn right, crawl through the fence and pick the trail back up, now going uphill and re-intersect the trail we started out on.
This trail isn’t hard but it does have it’s ups and downs.
Bring a snack if you like but we won’t be stopping for a meal.
As usual wear shoes with a good tread, bring water, and a hiking pole if needed. There are no creek crossings.
What we’re about
For those who love to hike with a destination and photography in mind. Hikes will be categorized by slow (turtle hikes), moderate, and adventurous.
This group is intended for those whom like photography combined with hiking in nature.

Spend an hour hiking one of our six different trails with a naturalist. This is educational excursion will give you a better understanding of the flora and fauna that can be found in the Park. You may even learn some of the Park’s history as well.

Each lesson is designed to prompt questions from the reading, draw out key values and encourage discussion. John Maxwell is a leadership expert, speaker and author. Its that time again- join us for our First Friday Professional Development this Friday, March 5th at 8:30am on Zoom!
We will be featuring Jeffery Kaplan, Director of Venture Asheville, who will be presenting on Developing Your Entrepreneurial Skillset.
The skills an individual requires to act entrepreneurially can be taught and developed and this philosophy serves as the foundation of Venture Asheville’s mentorship programs. Venture Asheville builds entrepreneurs and gets startups funded through three core initiatives: mentorship, financing, and programs. Join YPA as we learn how Venture Asheville serves our community and how we can all develop our entrepreneurial skills.

We are happy to announce we will offering YPA membership for the 2020-2021 year for HALF OFF! For the entire month of June, if you sign up to be a YPA member, it will only cost $25! We recognize the membership experience has been a little different lately and we’re happy to still have the ability to connect and provide value to our members through our virtual experiences. We hope we will be back to safe, in-person events soon and hope the reduced cost of membership helps those that may have been negatively affected in these tough times.
