Asheville Triathlon

Asheville Recreation Park Pool
The Asheville Triathlon course is a super event for every level of triathlete, from novice to elites. Novice + Beginner triathletes love this race! The pool swim is great for new swimmers & the run is flat and easy to navigate. Please note: the bike course has been challenging to some beginners in years past. Be prepared to ride over several challenging hills with steep grades. You will be required to stay on your bike. You may not get off your bike and push it up hills, as this is a safety hazard. Elite athletes – get ready for a PR! This race is fast and is a huge hit among local elites. The time trial swim start in a 50m pool allows swimmers to spread out. The bike leg is flat the first couple miles, so get down in your aero bars and push it. The middle section has some steep hills. Just get outta the saddle and roll over ’em! There are several downhill sections that are smokin’ fast! Many elites have PR’d during the 5k run, so bring your racing flats!

The “One Singular Sensation,” A Chorus Line, is coming to Flat Rock Playhouse for the first time and we are thrilled to share this award-winning musical with everyone! A Chorus Line is a celebration of those unsung heroes of the American Musical Theatre: the chorus dancers. The show follows 17 would-be dancers in their quest to make the cut for a new Broadway Musical. One by one, the dancers come forward to share the stories of their lives, giving it their all and putting themselves on the line to make the cut. Only eight will remain. Capturing the spirit, tension, and hope of an audition, A Chorus Line is the musical for everyone who’s ever had a dream and put it all out there to make it come true!

A Chorus Line once held the record as the longest running show on Broadway with over 6000 performances, and heralds nine Tony® Awards including Best Musical, Best Director and Best Choreographer, as well as the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Conceived and Originally Directed and Choreographed by Michael Bennett. Book by James Kirkwood & Nicholas Dante, Music by Marvin Hamlisch, Lyrics by Edward Kleban. Co-Choreographed by Bob Avian. Auditions For Honky Tonk Angels

Auditions for our September show, Honky Tonk Angels, will be held

Sunday, July 16, 2023 @ 3:00 p.m. and
Monday, July 17, 2023 @ 7:00 p.m.

at Tryon Little Theater Workshop, 516 S. Trade St., Tryon, NC.

Show dates: September 28- October 1 (5 performances at Tryon Fine Arts Center).

Rehearsals will begin mid-August. Director: Dan Harvey & Music Director: Pam McNeil

Needed: 3 women

Strong singers in the country/gospel style

Each Auditioner will:

1. Sing a short SOLO in the country or gospel style. (Bring sheet music for the accompanist.)
2. Participate in a short DANCE audition.
3. READ from the script.

When three gutsy gals from different backgrounds take charge of their lives, they decide to follow their honky tonk dreams to the city of Nashville. Combining 30 classic country tunes (including “Stand By Your Man,” “9 to 5,” “Harper Valley PTA,” and more!) Honky Tonk Angels is a hilarious, foot-stomping good time from the creator of Always… Patsy Cline.

CHARACTERS:
– ANGELA (late 30s- early 40s). A Texas housewife who has a great sense of humor and a fiercely independent streak. She identifies with “Roseanne,” an earth-mother comedienne.
– DARLENE (late teens- early 20s). A young woman from the Deep South. She is pretty, sweet, and simple. She grew up in a coal mining town in West Virginia and the Mississippi Delta. She plays simple guitar. She also clogs.
– SUE ELLEN (early to mid- 30s). A Los Angeles career woman. She is a “citified” country girl. Smart, very attractive, sexy and frustrated. She dances, roller skates, and twirls baton (if possible). She also clogs. She should be a very good dancer.

ROCK OF AGES
Jul 16 @ 3:00 pm
Hendersonville Theatre

Book by Chris D’Arienzo
Arrangements and Orchestrations by Ethan Popp
Presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals
www.concordtheatricals.com

Director: Victoria Lamberth

This five-time Tony Award-nominated musical tells the story of a small-town girl, a city boy, and a rock ‘n’ roll romance on the Sunset Strip. But when the bar where rock reigns supreme is set to be demolished, it’s up to these wannabe rockers and their band of friends to save the day – and the music. Rock of Ages takes you back to the time of big bands with big egos playing big guitar solos and sporting even bigger hair! This jukebox musical features all of your favorite ‘80s rock anthems and power ballads from bands including Styx, Journey, Bon Jovi, Whitesnake, Night Ranger, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister and more.

Approximate Run Time: 2 hours, 15 minutes

Rating: PG-13 due to adult content, alcohol use, and language.

Chris Ruggiero: Teenage Dreams + Magic Moments
Jul 16 @ 7:00 pm
Wortham Center for the Performing Arts

Chris Ruggiero comes to Pittsburgh for one night only – joined by Pittsburgh icon Jimmie Ross and special guest star Donna Groom.

Chris has been touring the country at a dizzying pace, taking his audiences on a musical journey through the golden age of rock and roll. His PBS-TV appearances, feature on Good Morning America and hit albums have brought an even bigger audience, selling out shows all over the country on his recent 37-city tour! Chris shares his incredible story by breathing new life into the timeless music of the 50s, 60s & 70s with a live 6-piece band. If you remember songs like “Unchained Melody,” “My Cherie Amour,” & “This Magic Moment,” you’ll relish an evening spent with Chris. His unique interpretations of those and more are not only vocal triumphs, they feature brand new orchestrations by Four Seasons arranger and pop-rock legend Charlie Calello.

Jimmie Ross may be best known as the leader of The Jaggerz, but his solo shows, singles and album have been garnering more attention as of late, including his recording of “The Impossible Dream” which The Times cited for its elegance and “soulful sheen.” Jimmie’s current show consists of songs such as “Gotta Find My Way Back Home,” “Statue of a Fool,” and more iconic songs from his career. And, of course, considering Jimmie and Chris brought the house down with a duet the last time they appeared together at the Benedum, there’s always a chance for a magic moment or two when they’re under the same roof. You can also expect a special guest appearance from Donna Groom, whose duet with Jimmie on “I’m on the Outside (Looking In) / It’s Gonna Take a Miracle” has been the talk of the town lately.

“Songs you know and love from a voice you’ll never forget.” – BroadwayWorld

“Chris is what I call ‘the ultimate entertainer.’ I love his voice!” – Darlene Love

“Chris is so good at making the classics his own. I went to his show and loved every minute.” – Bill Medley of the Righteous Brothers

Funds for Fields: Youth Wellness Initiative

Pisgah Health Foundation is raising funds for renovations to the Ecusta Field, which is currently used by area athletes and community members and is in dire need of upgrades. The upgraded facility will allow for the expansion of youth athletic programs as well as open the field up for more events and recreational activities for everyone in Transylvania County.

With your donations and support, you can positively impact the lives of young athletes now! Soccer and other sports are integral in youth development, fostering physical, mental, and emotional growth. Additionally, outdoor recreational facilities are vital to our community’s wellbeing, especially since the pandemic led to higher levels of anxiety, depression, and stress as a result of decreased physical activity.

Along with others in our community, we hope you will join us in raising funds to renovate this field for all to enjoy in Brevard.

Jul 20 @ 10:15 am
Carl Sandburg Home

Carl Sandburg created his own version of American fairy tales when he published Rootabaga Stories (1922) and Rootabaga Pigeons (1923). He replaced the European fairy tale cast of princes, princesses, castles and kingdoms with icons American children would recognize — taxi-drivers, movie actors, skyscrapers, prairies and automobiles. Rootabaga Express! brings the stories of the Five Rusty Rats, Bimbo the Snip and more to life. You’ll meet new characters and journey farther into the Village of Liver and Onions and Sandburg’s imagination than ever before.

The 30-minute shows are appropriate for all ages and held rain or shine. These shows are supported by the Flat Rock Playhouse and the Park Store, operated by America’s National Parks.

For young visitors who attend the plays, there is a Rootabaga Junior Ranger program available. Activity sheets will be available at the amphitheater after the play and can be turned in at the Sandburg Home for a limited edition “Rootabaga Ranger” badge.

Apprentice actors from the Flat Rock Playhouse have performed adaptations of Sandburg’s works for park visitors since 1974. Using Sandburg’s own words from his collections of children’s stories, poetry, collected music, biography of Abraham Lincoln and his own autobiography, the performances provide visitors with a sense of the scope of his work and imagination. Sandburg was an expert storyteller, and easily wove important messages of fairness, empathy and social justice into his writings. Whatever play you are able to attend you will walk away with a smile on your face and a better understanding of the legacy of Carl Sandburg.
