In this world of push and pull, the power of mindfulness of breathing is the right antidote.
The Buddha explained that the quickest way to enlightenment is mindfulness of breathing, because this profound practice brings us to the complete stilling of thought, which allows insight to arise and uproot the erroneous view of self.
This retreat will explore the correct way to practice as it is explained in the suttas, and we will discuss how to overcome the hindrances that arise in meditation.
While this practice is a “hack,” or, direct path, to jhanic attainment, it is also one of the most dynamic practices, requiring constant and resolute mindfulness. Having Venerable Pannavati and Venerable Pannadipa provide you with guidance will assist you in discernment and skillfulness, teaching you to be an island unto yourselves.

Asheville Music Hall and Envisioned Arts ATL presents Minnesota w/ Pigeon Hole!
Minnesota
Christian Bauhofer, known by his fans as his party-crushing alter ego Minnesota, is one of the most innovative and proficient electronic producers to come out of the West Coast bass music movement. His sound breaks away from the various subgenres of EDM but holds onto origins of dubstep and hip-hop, creating a truly authentic experience for his audience. Early on in his career Minnesota said, “My goal is to make bass heavy dubstep/glitch-hop music that’ll get you dancing, but it is not the same old three note transformer step… I try to focus more on the melodic side of dubstep, and hopefully, make quality songwriting a more relevant factor in the genre.” For the past four years Minnesota has followed through on his word and designed smooth, melodic, uplifting sounds, which fans have celebrated nationwide.
So far in his career, Minnesota has traveled to over 50 cities and performed at nearly every major festival nationwide. Last year he headlined his first two tours, and performed with the likes of STS9, Big Gigantic, MiMOSA and Gramatik. His music has been lauded by the likes of Bassnectar, Adventure Club, Paper Diamond and many others in his genre. Discussing Minnesota’s track “Push It,” Bassnectar once commented, “[It’s] quickly becoming a staple in my sets,” and “perfect for when I need a track that is epic and churning but also melodically hyped.” The support of Minnesota’s management team, agency, and some of the world’s greatest artists can only attribute to his hunger for more time spent on the road and in the studio. To those that haven’t had the opportunity to see Minnesota perform, make sure to be on the lookout for the next time he rolls into your city. To put it lightly, Minnesota is a name to watch.

Pigeon Hole
Vancouver Island duo Pigeon Hole first forged their name in the underground hip hop culture of the mid-2000’s. From there, the drive to experiment with new forms of production saw them splinter off from rap onto the fringes of the bass music scene. True to their roots, Pigeon Hole’s sound leans heavily on nostalgic reference to their early hip hop influences; establishing themselves at the forefront of Canada’s Bass music scene with their new approach to the genre.
Pigeon Hole (Lee Napthine and Colin McCue) got their start as members of west coast hip hop collective Sweatshop Union. Years on the road led into the summer of 2011, where the group toured the bass music festivals, and were exposed to a new array of genres and sounds. The decision was made to cut ties with Sweatshop Union and head back into the studio to redefine themselves excited by the many forms of electronic music they had been inspired by. The 2013 LP ‘Chimp Blood’, on Urbnet Records, was Pigeon Hole’s first dip into electronica and played to their strengths as lyricists and performers. The albums anthemic singles, ‘Champion’ and ‘Higher State’, brought a refreshing voice to the rap world, and introduced a group in the infant stages of discovering it’s new sound.
Recently, a series of quality singles and EP’s on home-base label Sleeveless Records saw Pigeon Hole pick up where they left off with their brand of broken hip hop bass tunes, and dabble in the newly coined ‘Halftime’ Drum & Bass sub-sect. The 2017 sticky-analog single ‘Headnod’ on Saturate Records, and the G-funk inspired ‘6 AM’ on Gravitas, got international playlist support from DJ’s and were rinsed throughout the summer. Pigeon Hole fuelled momentum by touring North American festivals, highlighted by prime time slot performances at Shambhala, SXSW, and Burning Man’s Camp Questionmark Stage.
Pigeon Hole won’t stop there. They begin the new year at the front of the pack in an emerging bass music landscape. One in which they have secured a position as both pioneers of the past and innovators of an ever more promising future.

illanthropy.
illanthropy, known off the stage as Stephen Blasy, is an Asheville, NC-based producer with more than his own agenda in mind. Several years into his DJ production pursuits, he decided that his live performances should be more than just a show that hypes up the crowd, makes the floor bounce, and is forgotten the next day. He blends big bass sounds, clear, ethereal melodies, and conscious thoughts in his production, working to inspire his crowd not only to dance, but to also try and expand their minds in a way that positively and significantly impacts their environment.
illanthropy has performed alongside artists such as Opiuo (with the Opiuo Band), Thriftworks, Andreilien, Spankalicious, Sixis, Levitation Jones, and many more, and has performed at the New Mountain Theater in Asheville, the Asheville Music Hall, and the OneStop, located also in Asheville, NC.

Reclaimed Creations is a unique sculpture exhibit created by renowned artist Sayaka Ganz. Utilizing reclaimed plastic objects, such as discarded utensils, Ganz creates amazing sculptures that visually appear unified at a distance, but are in fact separated when examined up close. Described as using a “3D impressionistic” style, Ganz’s exhibit includes installations of animals in motion, which are in rich in color and energy, to create an illusion of form.
About the Artist
Born in Yokohama, Japan, Sayaka Ganz grew up living in Japan, Brazil and Hong Kong. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Indiana University, Bloomington, and a Master of Fine Arts degree in sculpture from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. A lecturer and teacher, Ganz’s work has been displayed at various institutions around the globe, including the Hermann Geiger Foundation in Cecina, Italy, the Isle Gallery in Isle of Man, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California.
My work is about perceiving harmony, even in situations that appear chaotic from the inside. When observing my sculptures up close, one might see gaps, holes and items being held on only by small points; step away, however, and the sculptures reveal the harmony created when the objects are aligned to the same general (but not identical) direction. Similarly, it is important to gain perspective by stepping back from current problems and look at the larger picture. Then one can perceive the beauty and patterns that exist.”

When reflecting on the current state of the environment, it seems that we have entered into times of seismic sorrows. Carbon emissions, water pollution, fracking, and changing climate patterns all point to a troubling reality with serious consequences for human and non-human populations. Through weavings, installations, sculpture, and print, artists Rena Detrixhe and Tali Weinberg (Tulsa, OK) explore the complex relationship between humans and the planet, offering insights, expressing grief, and creating space for resilience and change.
In Time of Seismic Sorrows is curated by Marilyn Zapf and organized by the Center for Craft. The Center for Craft is supported in part by the N.C. Arts Council, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.

Peace Western North Carolina Friends!
Starting in November, we invite YOU to join us at our urban home-base @smithmillworks to revitalize and expand our space!
We will gather on Sundays to start a bio-intensive garden FROM SCRATCH, to be located by the pond, where we will be cultivating community through empowerment events, educational field trips and a variety of artistic, socially-engaged shin-digs with a mission. <3
Throughout fall, we will establish the new garden by making lasagna for the earth (aka sheet-mulching >> layering compostable matter that breaks down over winter to build soil for spring!) We will also practice whole-ecosystem design together, and feature eco-art projects throughout the Sunday sessions.
Our grassroots project is about exploring the intersections between food sovereignty, decolonization, DIY health, art and social justice. We believe that FOOD (how we grow, harvest, buy, distribute, prepare & eat it) is an incredibly optimal platform to create a web of change/evolution in communities small and large.
If you have been wanting to get involved, to get your hands in the earth, to spend time with people who see a better world for all of us, to learn and share a thing or two, then please join us for #Soulandsoilsundays !!!
Learn something, teach something, be inspired, and get connected in the beautiful web of an ever-growing community.
