From Thursday, May 2nd until Saturday, June 22nd, Momentum Gallery hosts a two-person, mixed media exhibition called Dissolution. The collection features individually created and collaborative works by two artists, Seth Clark and Jason Forck. Original collages mounted to panels play off architectonic sculptures in glass and wood culminating in a cohesive body of work that explores the notion of deteriorating architecture. This event is free and open to the public.

A new temporary exhibit titled “Dressing for the Occasion: Mid-Century Sandburg as Celebrity and Family Man” opens on May 13, 2019. The exhibit, which runs through October, is part of the Sandburg Home tour and features clothing and accessories from both the park’s permanent collection and loaned items from the Sandburg family.
“Dressing for the Occasion” offers visitors a window into the style, culture, and feel of mid-century America. The family’s clothing and accessories weave together the roles of Carl Sandburg as a prominent writer, celebrity, father, and husband. This temporary exhibit offers an exciting opportunity for the public to view objects that are normally in storage or in the possession of Sandburg family members. Tours of the Sandburg Home are offered daily from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. Tickets are available first come, first served, each day from the visitor information area in the ground level of the Sandburg Home.
Nearly every room in the historically furnished house museum will be included in the exhibit. Visitors will see the characteristic scarves Carl Sandburg wore as he played his guitar and sang folk songs to entertain his family and guests, the dress Lilian Sandburg wore to meet President Lyndon B. Johnson, and many other mid-century pieces worn by the Sandburgs and their daughters. Historic photographs, paired with the clothing, will provide context.

Learn to write icons from professional icon writer Melissa Moss. This retreat is intended for those new to icon writing.
The retreat will be held in as close to a scriptorium atmosphere as possible. We will start with prayer, have prayer at noon-day, and end the workday with prayer. We pray especially that the Holy Spirit will work through our hands to help us depict the holy images. Technique and icon lore will be covered, and questions welcomed from the participants, but otherwise, we will work in silence.
All materials are provided.
We will be working with the icon of Christ Pantocrator from St. Catherine’s monastery in the Sinai. You will leave the 5-day retreat with your own icon.
On Tuesday evening the group will travel to Grace Church in the Mountains, Episcopal in Waynesville for a lecture and visit to the stunning traveling exhibition that presents the mystery and spiritual power of icons through the work of artist Ludmila Pawlowska’s exhibit Icons in Transformation. Overnight participants will purchase dinner in Waynesville on Tuesday.
Commuter and overnight options are available. Registration fees and other information are available on the Lake Logan website.

An exhibition of youth art titled “Let a Joy Keep You,” is on display from April 1 to May 31, 2019. The inspiration for the art comes from the first line of Carl Sandburg’s poem “Joy.” Each of the 70 canvases reflects how the young artists chose to interpret what joy means to them. Visitors can see the installation at the Sandburg Home when they visit. Young artists are represented from across the country and locally, including students from Sugarloaf Elementary School in Hendersonville, NC.

Join us for another free legal name change clinic. We will supply you with all of the paperwork needed for the name change and help you answer any questions you may have while navigating this often confusing process. It’s easier with friends!
Our clinic is free, but there are different costs associated with the name change process that you will pay to different agencies along the way, and they are as follows:
Fingerprint fees: $10 each (you’ll need 2 sets)
State background check: $14
FBI background check: $18
Name change petition: $120
Notary fees: vary by location
There is also a charge for a new copy of your birth certificate, but that depends on what state you were born in. To find that info, check https://www.vitalchek.com.
Not all fees are due at the same time in the name change process. Fingerprints are the first step in the process which you then send off for the the state and FBI background checks. The federal background check can take up to 3 months to return, so you will have a little time to get the filing fee for the name change petition together.
If you feel like you would be more comfortable with an escort to the ID Bureau for fingerprinting or to the courthouse to file papers, please let us know in advance of the clinic date so that we can make the proper arrangements.

Photos Day or Night: The Archive of Hugh Mangum is an intimate look at the life and work of this early 20th-century American photographer. The book was made in close collaboration with Mangum’s granddaughter and features never-before-seen photographs and ephemera from their family archive.
Sarah Stacke is a photographer and writer based in Brooklyn, NY. In 2012 she received a graduate degree from Duke University tailored to analyze photographic representations of African and African American communities. For her capstone project, Stacke extensively researched Mangum’s archive and curated the first-ever solo exhibition of his work, which was shown at Duke’s Center for Documentary Studies (CDS) in 2012. Shortly thereafter she wrote pieces for The New York Times and Aperture about Mangum, and curated a major installation of his work, Keep All You Wish: The Photographs of Hugh Mangum, at the Asheville Art Museum in 2015. She has been an instructor at CDS since 2013 and is an adjunct professor at CUNY’s Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism and the International Center of Photography, where she teaches a course about the role archives play in society. In her photography work, Stacke looks at daily life in communities whose geographic borders were formed during periods of colonization. Often spending time with a community over the course of months or years, she looks at the intersection of culture and memory, and questions how land—and the loss of it—shapes identities. Her work has appeared in National Geographic, The New York Times, The New Yorker, BuzzFeed, and Photo District News.
Presented in partnership with Malaprop’s Bookstore/Café. Books will be available for purchase at Malaprop’s.

Negro Terror is a documentary film that tells the story of one band’s influential role within the vibrant and eclectic underground music community of Memphis, TN.
As a band, Negro Terror champions the history, music, and various politics of their beloved hometown through social and political ideologies that are far more complex than just being another hardcore punk band with a provocative name.
