Carl Sandburg wrote countless words in an array of different genres, including poetry, children’s stories, journal articles, as well as a biography and autobiography! He wrote of love and nature, dreams and struggles. This year’s theme of “Memory” is echoed in much of his works. ““Under the summer roses, when the flagrant crimson, lurks in the dusk, Of the wild red leaves, Love, with little hands, comes and touches you with a thousand memories, and asks you beautiful, unanswerable questions.” Carl Sandburg
Poems submitted for the 2024 contest should reflect the theme of “Memory.” By definition, “the process or power of recallling something learned or experienced from the past” Note: Poems do NOT need to be titled Memory, as long as the poem itself relates to the theme.
Students are invited to submit a poem to Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site’s annual Student Poetry Contest. The contest encourages youth to explore writing their own poetry and is open to students nationwide!
- Submissions are accepted from grades 3-12 and must be submitted by email by Monday March 4, 2024. See below for submission rules.
- Winners will be notified by April 7, 2024, and will be invited to participate in a virtual celebration program on Sunday, April 28.
Your children are welcome anytime between 5-10 pm, pizza dinner is included, $40 for the first child & $20 for each additional sibling. Only 18 spots are available – registration is open on our website!

The sale may feature handmade items, artwork, collectibles, clothing, household goods, plants, furniture, shoes, antiques, tools, cookbooks, novels, children’s books, art books, vinyl records, toys, paintings, photography, and much more by local vendors & artisans.

Everyone is invited to our monthly game night. I bring a group of games each month but feel free to bring your own as well. No specific games are set up for the night, we just bring a bunch of stuff from our collections and play some pick-up games. We have the tables and chairs. Bring your own food if you’d like (there is a microwave and fridge). There is also a Chinese place across the street, a convenience store for drinks and snacks, and we’re in walking distance to Hot Dog World. NOTE: This event is held at a church but it is not a church event, it is a community event. Everyone is welcome, everyone should feel comfortable attending, and while I’m always happy to privately answer questions about my faith or the church if asked, proselytizing is not the purpose of these gatherings. We are only a 15-minute drive from Asheville in Swannanoa, NC. Entering the show is always free and this is a fun family-friendly event. Food and drink are available daily.

Guests will meet at Dssolvr (63 N. Lexington Ave., Asheville, NC 28801) and then depart with their treasure map on a walking team scavenger hunt where they will use their minds and feet to follow St. Patrick’s Day themed clues, solve puzzles, and crack codes to find and unlock the treasure chest for a grand prize!
The hunt involves walking a up to 2.0 miles in total and will take place rain or shine, so long as the weather does not become dangerous. The hunt typically takes about 60 minutes to complete.
Children under 10 years old are welcome to participate for free with the purchase of an Adult ticket.

Come on by for night of spoken word presented by Dark City Poets Society at Oak and Grist Distilling Company. Everyone is welcome to share a few poems or just sit back and drink for a good cause.
The event is free and $1 from every classic cocktail will be donated to Friends of the Black Mountain Library.

The Friends of the South Buncombe Library are pleased to announce their first live, in-person book sale of 2024! We will have thousands of fiction AND non-fiction books, not to mention DVDS, CDs, and puzzles at bargain prices, in every genre and for every age group. Prices are a steal at $2.00 for adult hardcovers and paperbacks for just $1.00. Children’s items are only $1.00 & 50¢! And all movies and music are $1.00. Proceeds benefit your library in so many ways: purchasing library supplies and equipment, newspapers, and large print books; providing children’s programs; and improving the grounds. Sale Hours: 10am-4pm Friday and Saturday, with 10am-12pm on Friday reserved for Friends of the Library members. Not a member? Calling all Poets! The Weaverville Library is collaborating with Weaverville WORDPLAY to host poetry workshops at the Weaverville Library. We will be working on crafting our poetry and offering feedback to writers.

Asheville Glass Market, a seasonal open air market hosted at Level 42 Gallery & Studio, focusing exclusively on regional glass artists! The AGM will be hosted once a season in the Spring, Summer, and Fall, with the first one being hosted on Saturday, April 13th, from 10am-5pm, and will feature over 40 local glass artists. These markets will coincide with “Second Saturdays” in the River Arts District which is by far our busiest foot traffic days of the year. While the market is hosted around the exterior of our building, inside we will be serving drinks in the gallery, and we will host an open studio with free studio time for local artists who want to collaborate, and for the public to watch.
