Purple Ribbon Charity Pickleball Tournament

HRC is proud to announce the Purple Ribbon Charity Pickleball Tournament!  This one day tournament will be on Saturday, May 4th.  Profits will be donated to the Alzheimer’s Association as part of their Longest Day initiative.

The divisions will be:  Men’s,  Women’s and Mixed Open Doubles
18+ Men’s, Women’s and Mixed  3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5 Doubles.
There will be no singles.

Each team is guaranteed to play at least 3 matches during the tournament.  All participants get a swag bag on check-in and free food and drink will be provided.  Awards will be given for the 1st and 2nd place teams in each division.  There is a $40.00 entry fee for each event entered per person.  Each participant can play up to two events.

Hendersonville Racquet Club is a ten acre complex that includes 5 outdoor pickleball courts, 6 outdoor tennis courts, 3 indoor tennis courts, four indoor pickleball courts, four racquetball courts, an outdoor swimming pool, fitness center, group fitness classes, and outdoor leisure area by Shaw’s Creek and pond. Kids Fishing Tournaments

Kids Fishing Tournaments: For young anglers, the first kids fishing tournament will be taking place on April 13 at Charles D. Owen Park from 8-11:30 a.m. There will also be kids fishing tournaments at Lake Julian Park on May 4 and August 24, from 8-11:30 a.m. These events are open to all youth 15 and under. Competitors will be divided into age groups (0-5, 6-10, and 11-15) with prizes in each for biggest fish caught, smallest fish caught, and most fish caught. The admission for these fishing tournaments is $10, which includes bait, beverages, and grab-n-go breakfast items. Pre-registration is encouraged. 

Spring Kids Fishing Tournament

Buncombe County Parks & Recreation is excited to announce its 2024 Spring Kids Fishing Tournament, which will be taking place at the beautiful Lake Julian Park on May 4, from 8-11:30 a.m. Families are invited to join us for this annual event where the love of nature and joy of fishing unite!

This event is for youth ages 15 and under. Young anglers will be divided into three age brackets for the competition: 0-5, 6-10, and 11-15. Participants can win prizes for the biggest fish, the smallest fish, and the most fish caught. Each fish caught must be brought to the designated measuring station one at a time. After measurement, the fish will be released back into the lake.

For a registration fee of $10, each young angler will receive a bucket, bait, and an assortment of snacks and refreshing beverages that will be available throughout the morning. Pre-registration is recommended, but walk-up registration will be available on the day of the tournament. Registration will open at 7:30 a.m. Fishing begins promptly at 8 a.m. and will end at 11:00 a.m. Prizes will be handed out at 11:30 a.m. Winners must be present to accept the prize.?Prizes include a mix of fishing gear, with the grand prize being a kayak donated by FeelFree kayaks and Waterways kayaks.

No fishing license is required for residents under 16 years old. No boat fishing is allowed for the tournament participants. All competitors must be accompanied by an adult, but the adult may not cast or reel. Only one fishing pole may be in the water per participant. Competitors are required to bring their own fishing poles and tackle.

Get ready to enjoy moments with fellow anglers, excitement, and friendly competition!

Tanger Outlets Asheville to Host Girls on the Run 5K, May 5

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (April 22, 2024) – Tanger Outlets Asheville invites families, friends and runners to participate in the Girls on the Run Spring Season Celebratory 5K on Sunday, May 5, sponsored by Advent Health. The fun-filled family event aims to promote health, fitness and empowerment for young girls in the community. Girls on the Run Western North Carolina is a non-profit organization that inspires young girls to be confident and healthy through an interactive curriculum that incorporates running. Alongside the 5K race, participants can enjoy happy hair, legos, large board games, a DJ and a dance party. The Hop Ice Creamery will sell ice cream on-site for patrons to cool off. Community runners who wish to support Girls on the Run programs are welcome to participate.

Goodwill Industries of Northwest North Carolina … teeing up success since 1926. Goodwill’s 24th Annual Golf Tournament will be held on Thursday, May 9, 2024 at Tanglewood Park in Clemmons, NC. Proceeds from the event will be used to support Goodwill’s Outreach Scholarship Fund which provides financial assistance and other resources to program participants. Fees include sales tax. Play like a kid again in Buncombe County Parks & Recreation’s first summer adult co-ed kickball league! The league will take place over the span of 4 weeks, culminating in a final game where all teams will have the chance to compete for the title. Games will take place on every Tuesday during the month of June from 6-8 p.m. at Charles D. Owen Park (875 Warren Wilson Road in Swannanoa). Each game will last 45 minutes, or 7 innings.

This kickball league prioritizes recreational enjoyment over competitiveness, and emphasizes a social environment where participants can make new friends while having fun. Participants of all skill levels and backgrounds are welcome. “Kickball is a timeless sport that encourages friendly competition, laughter and exercise,” says Program Coordinator, Mac Stanley. “This is a wonderful way to spend time with friends at one of our many beautiful parks.”

Registration for the kickball league opens on May 6, and closes on May 24. There must be 4 teams total, with a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 15 players per team. The cost to participate is $150 per team. All team members must be over 18 years old. The opening game is scheduled for Tuesday, June 4th at 6:00 p.m. on Field 1 at Charles D. Owen Park. A full game schedule will be provided to team captains prior to the start of the season. Teams can register here

Movies in the Park returns with free family favorite films projected on a massive outdoor screen in Pack Square Park just after dusk on the second Friday of the month! Community members are invited to bring blankets and lawn chairs to the beloved summer tradition produced by Asheville Parks & Recreation (APR) and sponsored by Au Pair in America.

The APR Rec n Roll Play Zone opens about an hour before showtime with games, music, and other activities for kids and teens, as well as themed giveaways while supplies last.

Discover the beauty of the 4th annual Jump off Rock Half Marathon & 10k presented by Hunter Subaru and UNC Health Pardee, an endurance running event unlike any other! Experience the thrill of one of the most scenic and fastest half marathon races in the south, running “downhill to downtown.” The Half has garnered a reputation as the most breathtaking and picturesque downhill half marathon in the Southeast, and it’s no wonder why!

Starting at Jump off Rock, a national landmark and the highest peak of the Town of Laurel Park, endurance runners will be captivated by the stunning views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the colorful blooms and blossoms of spring. Then, continue on the gently downhill and picturesque 13.1 mile route that leads straight to the heart of downtown Hendersonville at Main Street.

The 10k race is fast and fun, commencing at the base of the Town of Laurel Park at the Hendersonville Family YMCA. Runners can join in with the half marathoners along the route and enjoy the beauty of the Town of Hendersonville that surrounds them. The 10k route is moderately flat and has a couple of gentle rollers throughout.

Finish line festivities await all participants at the same location in Historic Downtown Hendersonville on Main Street, creating a vibrant atmosphere of celebration and camaraderie!

Asheville Parks & Recreation’s public pools provide safe and affordable outdoor summer fun for all ages. For info about pool schedules, please call 828-348-4770 or visit ashevillecitypools.com.

Malvern Hills Park’s 90 year-old outdoor pool will not open this summer. While we were able to keep the facility operational through last summer, the pool can no longer be repaired to safely meet the needs of our community. For more, read this article.
