Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library Free Books for Children ages 0-5
Jun 9 all-day
online w/ Literacy Together

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library impacts the pre-literacy skills and school readiness of children under the age of 5 in Buncombe County. The program mails a new, free, age-appropriate book to registered children each month until they turn five years old. Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library creates a home library of up to 60 books and instills a love of books and reading from an early age. If you have any questions about the program, please send an email to [email protected].

A national panel of educators selects the Imagination Library titles, which include: The Little Engine that Could, Last Stop on Market Street, Violet the Pilot, As an Oak Tree Grows, The Tale of Peter Rabbit, Llama Llama Red Pajama, Look Out Kindergarten, here I come, and many more (take a look at all the titles).

Register your child now!

Program Launch and Expansions

Literacy Together became a Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library affiliate in November 2015 with support from the Buncombe Partnership for Children. Through this program, registered children in Buncombe County receive a free book in the mail each month. Their parents also have the opportunity to attend workshops to learn how to build their children’s early literacy skills. Parents in need of literacy assistance are encouraged to receive tutoring through Literacy Together’s adult programming.

The program served 200 children during the 2015/16 fiscal year. The program expanded to serve 400 children in July 2016, and 600 in August 2017. In July 2018, capacity increased to 1,900 thanks to a special allocation in the North Carolina state budget. We’re now serving 4,600 kids in Buncombe County.

The RAD Half Marathon + 10K
Jun 9 @ 7:00 am
Asheville NC

The RAD Half Marathon & 10K is an exhilarating and picturesque race that takes participants on a captivating journey through Asheville’s famed River Arts District (RAD). With its scenic course meandering along the French Broad River and through the heart of Asheville’s artistic and cultural hub, this event offers not only a rewarding athletic experience but also a unique opportunity to soak in the local area’s artistry and creativity. The PR-worthy course boasts a net elevation loss making it one of the fastest races around. The RAD Half Marathon is more than just a race; it’s a celebration of the city’s rich artistic spirit and the natural beauty that surrounds it, making it a must-attend event for both local and visiting runners alike.

Exciting course upgrades are here for 2024! New route maps have now been published!

The RAD Half Marathon & 10K run through the best parts of the City of Asheville, North Carolina, including downtown city streets, River Arts District, and the French Broad River Park. This is a city-style, point-to-point race that begins in Pack Square and concludes in the River Arts District. These fast races are a dream come true for runners looking to get a personal best in the mountains of Western North Carolina. The majority of the miles are downhill from downtown and ‘flat’ running along the river on the greenway and through the city parks. Endurance runners will have an opportunity to ‘break in’ the brand-new section of the newly completed greenway section of the French Broad River Greenway on Riverside Drive and Lyman Street.

POST RACE FESTIVITIES

The post-race party following the RAD Half Marathon & 10K is a lively and festive affair that perfectly complements the exhilaration of the race itself. Held in the heart of the River Arts District, this celebration brings together participants, spectators, and the local community in a spirit of camaraderie and shared achievement. The party features wellness services, live music from local musicians, and food and beverage vendors.

BARK & BOLT RACES

Presented by Hunter Subaru

Unleash the Fun at this Dog-Friendly Race Event

JUNE 14, 2024

The Bark and Bolt race in Hendersonville, North Carolina, is a thrilling and heartwarming event that brings together both paws and people. This unique race allows dogs and their owners to celebrate physical fitness and outdoor activity together. It’s not just about the race, though; the event fosters a sense of community, promoting the bond between dogs and their owners while also raising awareness about responsible pet ownership. With its lively atmosphere and the joyful barks of four-legged participants, the Bark and Bolt race is an exciting race for humans and their canine companions to run or walk across the finish line together!

All races will begin and end in Hendersonville’s Patton Park. The 5K course is a scenic, out and back route that follows the Oklawaha Greenway. There are some moderate hills but the majority of the course is flat. The 1-mile race also follows the Greenway and has one hill just before the finish. It too is on paved surfaces and both courses will have a single water station along the route. The Paw Pursuit 100 Meter Dash is our shortest race for the most well-behaved pups. It’s a quick sprint where dogs run alongside their owners to demonstrate their speed and agility. Dogs will be divided into three weight classes: Lightweight, Middleweight, and Heavyweight.
