A free screening of four recently restored experimental short films (1923-1929) by artist Man Ray with a new soundtrack by Sqürl. The evening will begin with a live performance by Chad Beattie.
Film Screening + Performance: Man Ray’s Return to Reason With a solo performance by Chad Beattie Thursday, June 20, 2024 at 7 PM Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center {120 College Street} Free and open to all Join us for a screening of Man Ray’s newly restored experimental masterpieces Return to Reason (1923-1929) with a new soundtrack by Jim Jarmusch-Carter Logan combo Sqürl. The evening will begin with a solo performance by the Asheville-based multi-instrumentalist Chad Beattie, followed by a free screening of the films. About Return to Reason: The four films Man Ray directed between 1923 and 1929, Le Retour à la raison, Emak-Bakia, L’Étoile de mer and Les Mystères du Château du Dé represent a high watermark of early European avant-garde cinema, a seminal nexus of experimental technique, surrealist narrative, and playful abstraction as suffused with dark eroticism. In these films Ray began discovering the limitless possibilities of montage as well as the direct application onto celluloid of objects such as salt, pepper, pins, and thumbtacks. Juxtaposing undulating geometric patterns, a twirling fairground ride, and a female nude, among other striking images, Ray finds subconscious correspondences among seemingly incongruous materials and figures. In celebration of the hundredth anniversary of Le Retour à la raison, the Jim Jarmusch-Carter Logan combo Sqürl present Man Ray: Return to Reason, with a newly-recorded drone rock soundtrack for that title as well as the three other Ray films. The band’s cosmic sounds complement Ray’s work by conjuring the beautiful, ineffable, haunting, and sublime. Born Emmanuel Radnitzky in the United States in 1890 to Russian Jewish immigrants, Man Ray is considered a pioneer of the surrealist and Dada movements, with work spanning painting, sculpture, photography, and filmmaking. Disillusioned with conventional art and shaped by the trauma of World War I, along with the emergence of modern media culture, Man Ray and other Dadaists turned to audacious formal experimentation to capture an unreasoning world. Though Man Ray is perhaps best remembered for his striking fashion photography, and the camera-less pictures he called “rayographs”—photograms made by positioning objects directly onto photosensitive material, which he then exposed—his inventive forays into filmmaking are lesser known. In his silent shorts, Man Ray expanded his avant-garde techniques to the realm of moving images, playing with chance and light to fantastic effect. About the performance: Chad Beattie has been making music under the name Yes Selma for the past decade, rummaging through clatter and drones. Since relocating from Baltimore to Asheville in 2021, he has found a distinct voice in the hammered dulcimer, exploring its dynamic range through the repetition of melodic patterns, the reverberation of harmonic phrases – both in his solo work as well as with vibraphonist Adam Lion under their duo, Aperture. Beattie’s latest album Tapioca Daydreams was released in 2023.

This first-hand account documents the brutality of combat and the raw nature of killing and death. It’s a journey of innocence lost, and the scars of war etched into the minds of service members. An untold account everyone should hear.

The Ranger Creed states that, “I accept the fact that as a Ranger my country expects me to move further, faster and fight harder than other soldier.”

After the release of RANGER, Further Faster Harder Foundation was created to give veterans a platform to tell their stories and find their purpose and voice again through documentaries, books, art, podcasts, and many other avenues.

Friday, June 28th marks the 19-year anniversary of the largest loss of Special Operations life since the Vietnam War. This event honors the memories of the 19 men who paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

Those and countless other quotes from the 1984
“mockumentary” This is Spin̈al Tap have long since entered
popular culture. The misadventures of Britain’s Loudest
Band™ were chronicled by director Marty DiBergi (Rob
Reiner) in the uproarious cult classic. The fictitious heavy
metal group featured Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest),
David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean) and Derek Smalls
(Harry Shearer). The hapless musicians endure countless hilarious misadventures in the classic
film. This is Spin̈al Tap was a critical smash and an extremely influential motion picture. A sequel
is set for release next year.
Sure, interested parties can view This is Spinal Tap at home. But some movies were designed to
be enjoyed as part of an engaged audience. And this film is most definitely one of those. And the
film has been out of theatrical circulation for years, so opportunities are few. Described as
“culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” by the Library of Congress and was selected for
preservation in the United States National Film Registry. But the main thing is that it’s really, really
funny and on-target.
Don’t miss this fun and rare opportunity. Black t-shirt optional.
As part of the Music Movie Mondays series, Grail Moviehouse in Asheville hosts a special one-
night-only showing of the film. Presented by Asheville-based speaker, author, music journalist (and
hardcore Spinal Tap fan) Bill Kopp, the evening will include a screening of the
film followed by an interactive discussion.

“Going to the movies has always been a kind of
communal experience,” says Kopp, host of Music
Movie Mondays. “Especially in this post-lockdown
era, the opportunity to not only watch a film but then
to discuss it with others is something even more
special. And music-related films lend themselves remarkably well to this
shared, interactive experience.”
Music Movie Mondays is a monthly series moderated by Bill Kopp, hosted by Grail Movie House

According to the science of Ayurveda, heat, inflammation, and irritation rise in our bodies over the summer. We use our yoga practice to cool our bodies every week to insure we are not allowing toxins and inflammation to build.

Must have some experience with yoga. Class is held outside on the backyard stage at One World Brewing West. Bring a mat and water bottle!

Drop ins welcome, no need to preregister.

Movies in the Park: Free Family Films

Pack Square Park

Movies in the Park returns with free family favorite films projected on a massive outdoor screen in Pack Square Park just after dusk on the second Friday of the month! Community members are invited to bring blankets and lawn chairs to the beloved summer tradition produced by Asheville Parks & Recreation (APR) and sponsored by Au Pair in America.

The APR Rec n Roll Play Zone opens about an hour before showtime with games, music, and other activities for kids and teens, as well as themed giveaways while supplies last.

🌜 All movies begin after dusk in Pack Square Park on 80 Court Plaza in downtown Asheville. Approximate showtimes listed above, but plan to arrive at least 15 minutes prior.

👛 Bring money for treats from local vendors Kona Ice of Asheville and Kernel Mike’s World Famous Kettle Corn.

🚲 Parking is free in marked spaces on city streets and in city-owned lots on Marjorie and Valley streets after 6pm, so there’s no need to feed the meter.

A Hickory Nut Gap tradition, back by popular demand! Bring your mat and mindfulness to the Big Barn to get centered.

Mary Beth believes yoga should be potent, but playful. She strives to deliver fluid, well balanced vignettes that offer physical expansion and mental restoration. She teaches gentle and vinyasa flow, all levels welcome! Variations encouraged, feel free to bring blocks, blankets or straps.
