Spoonin’: A Showcase of Handcrafted Spoons will open at Grovewood Gallery in Asheville on Saturday, September 14, with a reception from 2-5pm (free and open to the public). This group exhibition will include both functional and sculptural works from 18 notable artists from across the country, whose mediums range from wood to sterling silver and copper. Spoonin’ will remain on view through Sunday, October 13, 2019.
Save the date for our End of Summer Pop Up Market featuring some of Asheville’s finest artisans. Celebrate our Indian summer with shopping, bubbly, and tasty treats on Saturday, September 14th from 4-6pm!
Atlas Beauty will be hosting a market like no other that will feature local makers including Rachel Weisberg Apparel and Natalie Ray Fine Art, Sleep Swag, and Robin Lee Essentials, among other exciting brands!
For the French aristocrat in all of us, this rough-cut, crown-emerald of a race sweeps participants through a mystical journey, back to a time, when the estate might have resembled an 15th century countryside plantation, complete with a game-stocked forest, working vineyards, and a cold mountain river rushing by. Racers on this day will be lords of the land they claim under fast plowing feet & spokes.
The Asheville off-road series of multi-sport events at Biltmore Estate consists of 3 main events, each come with various privileges for participation.
All three of the off-road events in September are entirely on the historic grounds of the Biltmore Estate property. The Asheville Duathlon and Gravel Grinder events both get to explore the west side of Biltmore Estate, which is typically off-limits to guests. Join endurance athletes of all abilities and step to the start line, hearts booming in anticipation, to challenge mind and body while competing in the Annual Multi-Sport event series held at Biltmore Estate.
Event is limited to 750 spots. We expect the 6th Annual Event to sell out prior to race day! Sign up as an individual, or a 2—3 person relay team for the AVL Duathlon.

Hot Works 4th Asheville Fine Art Show, October 26 & 27, 2019 takes place in Pack Square Park, downtown Asheville. This art show is juried by art professionals and brings artists to sell his/her art in all discipline including paintings, sculpture, clay, glass, fiber, jewelry, wood and more. All art is original and personally handmade by the artist who is present at the show. There is something for everyone, in all price ranges. You will see many artists at this show who do not attend other shows in North Carolina or South Carolina.
As part of our commitment to bring art education into the community, a Youth Art Competition for grades K-8 or ages 5-13 is integrated within a 10×20 space at the Asheville Fine Art Show. Sponsored by Institute for the Arts & Education, the associated 501c3 non-profit organization, all students in grades K-8 or ages 5-13 are encouraged to enter his/her original and personally handmade art that will be publicly displayed in the art show the entire weekend. On Sunday, October 27 at 3pm, there is $250 in youth art awards presented. Students are exposed to the rules and entrepreneurship opportunity of doing art shows for a living. The program brings families to the art show and exposes them to great art.

Event Info: Sunday, September 15, 2019 at 7:45 am – Gravel Grinder Bike events (20, 40 and 60 mile options), 8:00 am – Asheville Duathlon – run/bike/run and 10k off-road run.
Duathlon: The Asheville Duathlon – a 5k off-road run, 13 mile off-road bike, and a final 5k packed dirt and trail off-road run. The off-road bike is non-technical riding on the west side of the estate, which is typically off-limits to regular guests at the estate. Individual participants or 2 or 3 person relay teams available.
Gravel Grinder Events: The Asheville Gravel Grinder Bike Events come packed with something for every type of rider, a 20, 40 or 60 mile option. Whether you are a seasoned athlete, a weekend warrior or scenery seeking rider, these events are for you! The Gravel Grinder Bike events are the only bike events at the estate that allows the participant to access the front of Biltmore House and on the west side of the estate on their bike.
10k Run: The Asheville 10k features an off-road 10k with paved, packed dirt and trail that takes the runner to a marvelous adventure. The course consists of paved greenway, hard packed dirt surface and single track trails that give extraordinary views of the mixed forests, fields and rugged landscape by Antler Hill Village and the Biltmore House, all while relishing the beautiful forests these extraordinary grounds offer.

Mills River and cross suspension bridge. Follow the river north on the Bradley Creek trail; then left on Squirrel Gap to a snack break on Poundingstone Mtn. Descend on Poundingmill trail to S. Mills River Trail, back to the suspension bridge; then right to the parking lot. Type: loop. Ascent: 1200’. Max elev: 3100’. Avg moving pace: 2.6 mph. Difficulty (1=effortless, 10=hard): 5. From Mills River Ingles to the trailhead (8.1 miles): Right (south) on NC-280 Boylston Hwy for 6.9 miles. Right on Turkey Pen Rd to parking at the end. Storytime & Art takes place at Enka-Candler Library on third Wednesdays at 10:30am.

Artist Henry Richardson arrives this week to install his sculpture Reflections on Unity, Thursday, September 19. The two-ton sculpture, to be placed upon a boulder selected by Richardson from a local quarry, will be the first work installed in the Museum’s plaza as part of its inaugural public art sculptural exhibition.
- 6-foot, 2-ton, glass orb to be installed on the Museum’s plaza.
- The boulder will be installed by crane at 8am, followed by the orb at 11am.
- Pack Square will be closed only in front of the Museum for the crane from 8am to approximately 2pm at the latest.
- TIMES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE. Due to the nature of this installation (art and a crane are involved) we might run a little early or late.

Tour artists will be present and will
exhibit an example of their artwork to be found on the tour. Art Pod Maps
and refreshments from the Artful Cup will be available. The evening will
also include an art raffle benefitting Backpacks for Kids. Attendees can
catch the Rhythm and Brews music as a bonus.
This month visit ha! as we celebrate the launch of a new addition to the ha! shop textile collection. Designed by amber m. jensen and made entirely by hand of woven wool and waxed canvas – just in time for the season of cozy weather and holiday. What is it, you ask? Shhhhh…Its top secret until the opening!
We are also thrilled to showcase a large scale ceramic installation created by textile and ceramic artist Eleanor Anderson. Over eight feet tall the work is made of hard fired clay yet a clear reflection of her weaving practice and love for hand-drawn line and color.
Finally, our dear friend and baker Brennan Johnson of Walnut Schoolhouse joins us in a celebration of our shared Scandinavian Heritage with decadent Scandinavian pastries and baked goods. we can’t wait to invite you in!

Make It Happen! Series
As we install artworks in the Museum’s plaza, atrium, and rooftop sculpture terrace in anticipation of our grand reopening, we are offering Museum Members exclusive behind-the-scenes access to artists and curatorial staff. Watch your email for dates, featured presenters, and registration information.
Today’s Art Break features a sneak peak of Reflections on Unity, currently being installed on the Museum’s plaza, and Q&A with artist Henry Richardson.

Kudzu is actually tremendously useful, and the time will come (sooner rather than later) when we will appreciate that. Young leaves are delicious cooked like spinach, the flowers make a lovely jelly, and the vines themselves make durable cordage as well as fiber rivalling bamboo and hemp fibers now being used in everything from carpeting to bedsheets and clothing. This free self-guided tour is a
celebration of local art when once a year artists across Henderson County
open their doors and invite the public behind the scenes to experience
their creative process. Meet the artists and see their latest work; find
special buys; view demonstrations of their craft. Original works in painting,
sculpture, pottery, jewelry, fiber arts, metal arts, woodworking and glass will
be offered by over 60 artists in 40 studios in the towns of Flat Rock, Tuxedo,
Hendersonville, Horse Shoe, Mills River, and Laurel Park. The Art League
of Henderson County is the Premier Tour sponsor.

Saturday, September 21, 1 – 3 PM
Learn the basics of colorwork in this two hour workshop! This workshop comes with a copy of the beautiful Foliole Cowl pattern by Christina Danaee, and 20% off our Ranger DK yarns. During the workshop, you’ll work through as much of the Foliole cowl as possible with guidance from the teacher, Emilie Gate. By the end of the class you’ll have the skills you’ll need to finish your cowl on your own, and the skills for any other pattern that involves colorwork.
About the teacher
Emilie works for Echoview selling their Yarn to Shops around the country. She has been knitting for several years and loves to help others learn how to knit, grow in their skills, and be stretched in new ways. When she isn’t knitting she can be found with her four boys or raising their herd of Miniature Dairy Goats on their Mini Farm in Candler.
Come learn the basics of felt painting and needle techniques to create 2D felt wall hangings. We will demonstrate how to create wet felted batts as a base, the quickest way to start a 2D project. Then, we will needle tack merino, alpaca, angora and other types of wool to create a 2D painting of whatever your heart desires. Finally, we’ll run them through Echoview’s Felt Loom to quickly finish the project, a process that would take hours needling by hand! All supplies are included, but feel free to bring your own wool or roving if you’d like.
About the teacher:
Yoko is a felter, spinner, knitter, gardener and mother to many rabbits and ducks, including 8 Angoras who share their wool for lots of fiber fun. She has been an artist her entire life and rarely follows a given pattern, preferring to find a medium and make it her own. Working at Echoview with all the roving around her, she took up felt work and hasn’t looked back. She’s constantly on the lookout for new fibers, techniques and creative friends – whether chatting at craft night or cruising the isles of local craft events. She has taught a variety of art mediums to makers from babies to hospice patients over the years and enjoys bringing out the creative side in everyone!
