Giving Tuesday 2021 is only two weeks away. This year, every dollar you donate on Giving Tuesday will be matched up to $50,000.

Let me tell you about Zach.

When Zach was 23 he was involved in a horrific car crash. He sustained a traumatic brain injury, severed his spinal cord, and was paralyzed from the neck down. Along with tremendous pain came addiction to prescription pain-killers, depression and anxiety. Eventually Zach lost his job, his marriage, and soon after he was homeless.

$27 a day will provide housing and case management support for one person for a year. Your Giving Tuesday donation to Homeward Bound will help folks like Zach get into their own homes this holiday season.

Reconnecting with the Magic of Live Theatre

On October 15th, 2021, something magical happened at 35 East Walnut Street. For the first time since March 2020, the magic of live theatre returned to ACT, as once again audience members, technicians, and performers raised the curtain on a nearly sold-out show. Laughter and applause filled our theatre again, and we all feel brighter for it.

How was this possible? YOU! Your support of theatre for and by the community is what makes the arts come alive at ACT. 

How can you help keep the magic alive in 2022? You can make a gift to support the education programs that will welcome thousands of students next year! You can make a gift to support the development of new plays by local playwrights! Wine and Wolves! Donate to Full Moon Farm Wolf Sanctuary

Full Moon Farm is an organization dedicated to the well being of the wolfdog (wolf hybrid). Situated on 17 beautiful mountain acres in Black Mountain, NC, we operate as a federally recognized 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization for abused and refused wolfdogs who find themselves in need of love, shelter, and care through no fault of their own.

Full Moon Farm provides a safe haven for animals that cannot be placed into homes for the rest of their lives.  Our rescued wolfdogs come from animal control agencies, closed breeding situations and occasionally, an owner in crisis.  We evaluate each animal upon intake and work with them at their level of comfort.

Some animals are “hands off” and we respect their choice, as well as that of the animals that crave human interaction.  Our goal is to enrich the lives of the residents, allowing them to reach their highest potential.  Your support by donation or sponsorship makes our task possible.

Though they may be abused or neglected, homeless because of death or divorce, they are all God’s Creatures and worthy of a lifetime of respect. We are here to serve them.

Originally from North Carolina and having just graduated college, Maddie Wiener is a stand-up comedian with a style described as “irreverent humor … with a streak of brazenness,” and “abrasive and likable at the same time.” At 23 years old, she was selected as a “New Face” at the 2021 Just For Laughs festival. Maddie has appeared on You Up with Nikki Glaser on Comedy Central’s Sirius XM channel, was a 2018 semi-finalist for Stand-Up NBC, and performed at the 2019 Limestone and Asheville Comedy Festivals. Most recently she taped a set for Comedy Central which will be airing later this year. Maddie currently resides in NYC.

Getaway Comedy: Andy Sandford

Andy Sandford is a comedian who got funny in Atlanta, GA and is now based out of New York City. Andy has performed his jokes on Conan and The Late Late Show with James Corden, as well as other, less prestigious shows. Andy’s debut album, Me the Whole Time; was one of Splitsider’s “9 Best Standup Albums of The Year.” His hour special, “Shameful Information,” is currently featured on Amazon Prime. Sandford even played an animated version of himself on Adult Swim’s Aqua Teen Hunger Force. FLAT ROCK PLAYHOUSE

 

In 1937, a group of struggling performers, led by Robroy Farquhar, organized themselves as the Vagabond Players. The Vagabonds worked in a variety of places over the course of three years, and in 1940 found themselves in the Blue Ridge region of Western North Carolina. The local and tourist community welcomed them with open arms when they presented their first summer season of plays in a 150-year-old grist mill they converted into The Old Mill Playhouse at Highland Lake. So successful was that summer, they returned in 1941. After WWII, the Vagabond Players reorganized came back to the region and opened a playhouse in nearby Lake Summit. The Lake Summit Playhouse thrived during the post-war years and soon the Vagabond Players were looking for a larger and permanent home. In 1952, the troupe of performers, and a newly formed board of directors made an offer to buy an 8-acre lot in the Village of Flat Rock. This new home made the Vagabonds “locals” and a rented big top gave birth to Flat Rock Playhouse. As the beautiful Western Carolina region continued to grow, so did the Playhouse and in 1961, by Act of the North Carolina General Assembly, Flat Rock Playhouse was officially designated The State Theatre of North Carolina. What began as a few weeks of summer performances in 1940 is now a nine-month season of plays including Broadway musicals, comedy, drama, and theatre for young audiences. The Playhouse’s dual mission of producing the performing arts and providing education in the performing arts includes a professional series; a summer and fall college apprentice and intern program; and Studio 52, year-round classes and workshops in theatre and film for students from kindergarten through adults. Flat Rock Playhouse now hosts over 98,000 patrons annually and is a significant contributor to the local economy and the Arts in North Carolina.

The Montreat Conference Center (MRA) is planning to build a 40 room hotel with meeting rooms and an underground parking garage on Assembly Drive in the center of Montreat, directly across from Robert Lake Park. We are strongly opposed.
Montreat Lodge Proposal Update
Last week, after 50+ hours of meeting over several months, expert testimony, and significant financial resources, the BoA has decided to approve the MRA’s permit application. The Special Use Permit granted to the MRA allows them to build a 40 room hotel with underground parking and meeting rooms on Assembly Drive. This is adjacent to public and privately owned property that will be significantly impacted by major development. Along with the Montreat Stewards, we are very disappointed with this decision. We believe that the proposed hotel would be detrimental to Montreat as shown by the evidence presented by the Hayner and Jones families and the demolition of invaluable historic resources is needless at best. As further legal action is considered, please consider making a donation to support the effort. Find more information at montreat-stewards.org.

He’s performed stand up on CollegeHumor Live, as a warm for The Opposition with Jordan Klepper,and was listed by TimeOutNY as one of Brooklyn Comedy Festival’s Biggest Stars. He’s been featured in Broad City webisodes, Amazon Prime’s Red Oaks, and is a regular guest on The Comedy Cellar’s Live From America Podcast. He’s a writer and director for political comedy channel We The Internet TV, where his work won a 2017 Webby Award and a 2018 Webby Award Honoree. He’s also written and performed with UCB Digital sketch teams and hosts Impro(VS)tandup every month at UCB East, The Breakdown with Boris Khaykin every month at The Red Room, and co-hosts the monthly traveling comedy show Undie-Party with Justin Perez and Corinne Fisher.
