NaNoWriMo began in 1999 as a daunting but straightforward challenge: to write 50,000 words of a novel during the thirty days of November. Now, each year on November 1, hundreds of thousands of people around the world begin to write, determined to end the month with 50,000 words of a brand-new novel.

Several branches will be hosting “Write-ins” throughout the month of November, offering quiet spaces for writers to come chip away at their word count. TFAC invites all artists: painters, sculptors, writers, performers & more — to a casual weekly drop-in gathering on Saturday mornings at 9 AM to share your works in progress, alert others, and chat about art and what’s happening in your community.
The first weekly Coffee is Saturday, August 20 at 9 am.

Great news for poets and poetry lovers: Dark City Poet’s Society is returning to the Black Mountain Library. DCPS is a completely free poetry group that is open to poets of all ages and experience levels. Join us at the Black Mountain Library from 6-7:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of every month for our (respectful) critique group. Writer Jasmin Pittman Morrell will host a class on constructing personal narratives November 11 at 10 a.m. in the Laurel Forum in Karpen Hall. Registration is $20 and open to the public. During the class, participants will explore constructing personal narratives, defined as stories about ourselves, the world, and the intersections of the two. By engaging poetry, excerpts of memoir essays, and using a tool called “the ladder of abstraction,” we’ll discuss the value of showing and telling in storytelling – and why we need both to deepen meaning. Making meaning is the purview of storytellers, and when we share our interpretations of events both public and intimate, we have a powerful opportunity to create empathy and shared understanding. There will be time for writing and feedback in this workshop that welcomes you to craft art birthed from your true stories.
Jasmin Pittman Morrell writes about identity, place, and belonging. Her work is most recently featured in “Bigger Than Bravery: Black Resilience and Reclamation in a Time of Pandemic,” as well as “Meeting at the Table: African-American Women Write On Race, Culture and Community”.

Visitors may park in faculty/staff and All Permit lots from 5:00 p.m. until 7:30 a.m., Monday through Friday, and on weekends, holidays, and campus breaks. Visitors are not permitted to park in resident student lots at any time.

National Novel Writing Month National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is a fun, empowering approach to creative writing. The challenge: draft an entire novel in just one month. Why do it? For 30 wild, exciting, surprising days, you get to silence your inner critic, let your imagination take over, and just create! We want to help. Come by our library and have a quiet space with other would-be authors to think, plan and perhaps, talk over ideas. **Outlaw Sound Festival Takes Center Stage at Revolve Gallery**
“Outlaw Sound” is a one-day musical event that promises to redefine the concert experience as a one-of-a-kind event for music enthusiasts of all generations, with a special focus on electronic and experimental artists.
Date: Saturday, November 18th
Time: Starting at 5:00 PM
Location: Revolve Gallery
Outlaw Sound Festival lineup artists include:
– Mark Hosler of Negativland, with his first solo performance in five years.
– We Are Ants to Them, a project by Andre Chomondeley, known for touring with legendary rock artists such as Pat Metheny, Adrian Belew, and Steve Howe. Chomondeley creates captivating soundscapes using modular synthesizers.
– Mike Holmes, known as Nostalgianoid, and the rising local artist Robin T100 Banks.
– A screening of the short film “Attempt to Move a Building” by A. Eithne Hamilton.
– Stoolsampler, who crafts unique dance tracks from a collage of voicemails left for Firestorm Books.
