{Re}HAPPENING 12
Apr 20 @ 3:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Lake Eden

Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center board member Jolene Mechanic developed a fundraising idea that grew into the {Re}HAPPENING, a dinner and performance event inspired by John Cage’s 1952 Theatre Piece No. 1, considered by many to be the first Happening. For the first six years, the Media Arts Project (MAP), an artist-run non-profit in Asheville, collaborated to organize and produce the event with BMCM+AC.

The {Re}HAPPENING is a one-day event at the historic campus of Black Mountain College, 20 minutes from Asheville. It is part art event, part fundraiser, and part community instigator, providing a platform for contemporary artists to share their responses to the vital legacy of Black Mountain College by activating the buildings and grounds of the BMC campus with installations, new media, music, and performance projects.

The annual event which takes place at what is now Camp Rockmont, provides a forum for regional and national artists and an accessible, immersive, educational experience for attendees.

12 Years of {Re}HAPPENING
Apr 20 @ 3:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Black Mountain College Campus at Lake Eden

Since 2010, Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center (BMCM+AC) has hosted the {Re}HAPPENING inspired by John Cage’s 1952 Theatre Piece No. 1, an unscripted performance at Black Mountain College considered by many to be the first Happening. The annual {Re}HAPPENING brings together dozens of contemporary artists whose work responds to and extends the legacy of Black Mountain College visionaries such as John Cage, David Tudor, Merce Cunningham, Anni Albers, M.C. Richards, Ruth Asawa, Buckminster Fuller, Josef Albers, and Robert Rauschenberg.

The 2024 {Re}HAPPENING celebrates the event’s 12th anniversary, featuring a host of artists presenting work throughout the Lake Eden campus. Visitors will encounter an immersive collection of projects in the tradition of BMC—installation, sound, movement, visual art, and interactive media.

The {Re}HAPPENING will also feature all-day installations including a large-scale immersive performance sculpture installation by Cilla Vee Life Arts; an audio-visual projection tunnel by Geo Lynx; an installation exploring the relationship between music and textiles by Qianwen Yu; an interactive, animated bog ecosystem by Victoria Bradbury; a spatialized multi-channel immersive audio experience by Christopher Hamilton; a solar-powered sound collage by Matt Allison; a multi-media event with historical footage and live sound mixing by Matt Greenwell and Ron Buffington; and a prismatic playground by Swannatopia, 10-year veterans of the event.

Interdisciplinary performances will include an experimental fantasy operetta by Majid Araim; a layering of bodies, projections, fabric, and sound by Caitlyn Schrader, Sean Mulachy, and Bjorn Bates; a participatory gathering of clay, movement, and improvisational sound by Kiran Jandu and Michael Medeiros; a nomadic dance journey by Julie Becton Gillum; a three-phased interdisciplinary happening by the Chicago-based Sound Performance Land Collective; a 4-6 hour reading performed at a distance by Justin William Evans; an improvisatory music and dance exchange with a plant by Lindsey Jones and Allen Fogelsanger; a multi-channel video performance based on Xanti Schawinsky’s Spectodrama by Miles Lamberson; a workshop, film,  and performance with salvaged plastic by Tom Hansell, Trevor McKenzie, and Julie Shepherd-Powell; and an aria for the elements by experimental vocalists Alisha Erao (Lush Agave) and Elisa Faires.

Sound-based projects will also include a cello performance inspired by Robert Rauschenberg’s “Erased de Kooning Drawing” by John Popham; harmonic and polyrhythmic performances with invented instruments by Spiral Garden; a new collaborative performance by filmmaker Madison Brookshire and composer Laura Steenberge; a concrete compositional experiment between poet Rachel Allen and sculptor Nathan Carter; and a presentation of little-known works by the 20th century composer Netty Simons, performed and organized by Zach Aliotta.

Other participatory and family-friendly sessions will include a collaborative bookmaking workshop with artists from Local Cloth; a chance to build Buckminster Fuller-inspired geodesic structures with Michael Webster; and a meditative music gardening circle with Sarah Louise.

The Asheville Dulcimer Orchestra w/ Guitar Duo Mark and Beverly Davis
Apr 20 @ 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm
Enka-Candler Library

The Enka-Candler Library welcomes The Asheville Dulcimer Orchestra and Guitar Duo, Mark and Beverly Davis in our community room for a performance on Saturday, April 20 at 3 PM.

Seats are first come first serve and doors will open around 2:30. This is an unticketed and free program. Capacity will be limited and the doors will close when seats are full. No entry after seats are filled.

The program will include sets from the ADO, from the guitar duo, and an en masse set of all musicians.  The joint set will include “Da Blues,” composed by Winston-Salem’s Alan Hirsch and presented here in an arrangement specifically for these instruments.

Since 2001 the classical guitar duo of Mark and Beverly Davis have performed around their native New England as well as in many international festivals across Europe.  With their two classical guitars (and the occasional mandolin), the duo performs an original blend of music informed by early folk traditions, baroque, classical, romantic, and contemporary idioms, chosen for the qualities of musical interest and emotional depth; their over-all focus is on the beauty of sound and the expressive capabilities of plucked strings.

The Asheville Dulcimer Orchestra is a community-based, nonprofessional, all-volunteer group that has been playing together since 2019.  We are committed to honoring the history and music of the dulcimer, and participate in the dulcimer’s growth from a simple, solo 3 string instrument to multipart orchestra arrangements for today’s family of dulcimers.

This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Enka-Candler Library.

Additionally, recent research published in the American Academy of Neurology Journal discovered that people who engaged in artistic activities in both middle and old age were 73% less likely to have memory and thinking problems, such as mild cognitive impairment, that lead to dementia. The study also revealed that people engaged in craft-based activities such as sewing, woodworking and ceramics in midlife and old age, are 45% less likely to encounter cognitive issues.

These stories are told in short scenes by characters isolated in their relationships, desperately trying to discern what is real.

“The Egg”  is based on an original short story written by Andy Weir and is adapted and directed by Alex McFadden. The play follows an individual’s experience with the afterlife upon their death, and their meeting with an individual known as God.

The ensemble so far worked with the conductors Riccardo Minasi, Maxim Emelyanychev, Stefano Montanari, George Petrou, Enrico Onofri and Francesco Corti. Concert master Zefira Valova leads the orchestra in various projects. Since 2016 Maxim Emelyanychev has been its chief conductor, and since 2019 Francesco Corti is principal guest conductor.

Il pomo d’oro is a regular guest in prestigious concert halls and festivals all over Europe. After the worldwide success of the program «In War and Peace» with Joyce DiDonato, in 2020 il pomo d’oro and Maxim Emelyanychev presented My favorite things with the and is now on tour worldwide with Eden, the latest program and album of il pomo d’oro, Maxim Emelyanychev and the American Mezzosoprano.

The discography of il pomo d’oro includes several opera recordings: G. F. In 2021 new albums with Bach harpsichord concertos vol.2 with Francesco Corti, Ombra Compagna with Lisette Oropesa (Mozart concert arias) and Jakub Józef Orliński (Anima Aeterna) were released. The name of the ensemble il pomo d’oro refers to Antonio Cesti’s opera from the year 1666. Composed to the wedding celebrations of Emperor Leopold I and Margarita Teresa of Spain, Il Pomo d’Oro was probably one of the largest, most expensive and most spectacular opera productions in the still young history of the genre. 24 different stage designs, a horse-ballet of 300 horses, a fireworks display of 73,000 rockets, numerous ‚special effects’- superlatives, which should make the Emperor’s court the highlight of cultural splendor in Europe.

LISSIE WITH THE WANDERING HEARTS
Apr 20 @ 8:00 pm
Salvage Station

Midwestern artist Lissie is a multi-talented tour de force who will release her new Americana-tinged indie folk album “Carving Canyons” on September 16. Ahead of the release she has unveiled the first song two songs “Flowers” and “Night Moves”. Debuted by FLOOD Magazine, the haunting sun-soaked song Night Moves channels Fleetwood Mac grandeur as it explores sensory memory and considering multiple realities vs one’s own point of view when navigating heartbreak.

“Carving Canyons” is about looking within while dealing with the uncertainty of the future—finding hope in personal and worldly adversity, no matter what the forecast might say. Inspired by her incredible intergenerational female friend group and the nature that surrounded her, Lissie traveled to Nashville and co-wrote much of the album with a majority of female-identifying songwriters—including Bre Kennedy, Madi Diaz, Morgan Nagler, Natalie Hemby, Kate York, and Sarah Buxton—who also contribute additional vocals throughout the album.

“Carving Canyons” is Lissie’s first full-length album since her UK Top 10 album “Castles” in 2018. In 2010, her 1st full length album “Catching A Tiger” unassumingly established Lissie as a global voice. Lissie has recently appeared in TV shows Twin Peaks and Loudermilk as well as co-owns the music genre themed popcorn company Otts Pops Indie Pop and is involved with land conservation.

ABOUT THE WANDERING HEARTS:

The Wandering Hearts achieved their second consecutive #1 on the UK official Americana Chart as they built on the breakthrough success of their Wild Silence debut with 2021’s self-titled second album, recorded between Woodstock and Omaha with producers Simone Felice, David Baron and Mike Mogis.

Arriving to a second wave of critical acclaim and again championed by Bob Harris at BBC Radio 2 (who previously awarded them his Breakthrough Artist at the UK Americana Awards), the album cemented the trio’s reputation as one of the leading lights in British Folk-Americana  – as underlined by their further nomination for Album Of The Year at the UK Americana Awards 2022, alongside Yola and The Staves.

The only British act to debut at both the iconic Ryman Theatre and The Grand Ole Opry in Nashville in the same week, The Wandering Hearts have shared stages and tours across the UK and US with artists such as the late greats Tom Petty, John Prine and Justin Townes Earle, and Margo Price, Lukas Nelson, Robert Plant and Eagles.

Signed to Chrysalis Records for their third album, the band have had a busy 2023 with stand out performances at SXSW in Austin, Black Deer Festival, and a forthcoming Americanafest show in Nashville, as well as extensively supporting and performing on stage alongside Jack Savoretti on his summer tour.

The release of their EP ‘Hesperus’ in May, followed by their addition of ‘Voices’ to the much lauded Nick Drake anthology ‘The Endless Coloured Ways’ in July (alongside Bombay Bicycle Club, Feist, Aurora, Emile Sande, Self Esteem and more), all hint at a flavour of their forthcoming album (due 2024). The new material puts sharp focus on their world-renowned three-part harmonies to explore their Folk-Rock influences, blending flavours that bring to mind Simon & Garfunkel, Fleetwood Mac and contemporaries like Milk Carton Kids and First Aid Kit.

SATSANG

I just want to write and perform songs that touch the heart and help others”. Letting go of genre, expectation, and boxes, Satsang has leaned into the power of songwriting to drive their forthcoming release, Flowers From The Fray (the band’s 5th album in 6 years) due out Fall 2022.

Recorded and self-produced with the help of bandmate and longtime collaborator Parker Brown, this record finds the duo tucked away in a secluded cabin in Southwest Montana digging back into the foundation on which Satsang was founded on. These songs were all so personal to me” says Drew McManus. “Whether it was really sifting through the stage of life I had found myself in which was a kind of dark night of the soul, or leaning into the love of my wife. This record is truly me bearing my heart. I needed to seclude myself to find out where these songs wanted to go, and having Parker’s musical guidance had a big hand in that.”

This record, coupled with the band’s last release All. Right. Now. is a maturing. A growing into the songwriter and musicians that the band was destined to be. A settled and firm foundation of influences and sound that brings every external aspect in and finds it internalized and distilled into Flowers From the Fray”.

Whether he’s playing alongside Trevor Hall and the Great In Between, performing his solo show, fronting his band, or jamming with the many artists he’s shared the stage with had the pleasure of sharing the stage with, Tim Snider’s passion for music always shines through. He brings his unique style and energy to the stage and has captivated the hearts and minds of audiences worldwide.

Music runs deep for Tim, spanning back generations. His great-grandfather was a doctoral graduate violinist and composer from Harvard. His great-grandmother was an opera singer and his grandmother—a passionate violinist as well—prophesied that he would be the family’s next violinist while holding him on her deathbed when he was two months old.  An Itzhak Perlman performance on Sesame Street became his earliest musical inspiration—at just three-and-a-half—and classical music first provided the impetus to learn his instrument. Over the years other influences have come into play: from exposure to the raw energy of rock music he picked up guitar, watching a Ben Harper concert turned him onto songwriting, and sojourns in Spain and Cuba introduced flamenco, salsa, and Afro-Cuban rhythms into his repertoire. Embracing these diverse influences, Tim’s musical odyssey took him to uncharted territories. Returning to college, he spent a year studying jazz and eventually rediscovered his love of classical music.

With a career now spanning international borders, music has led Tim to tour throughout Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, Mexico, Canada, and the United States.  He has written and recorded countless string arrangements for artists across the globe including hip-hop Icon Talib Kweli, Nickelodeon’s Big Time Rush, Kairo, Baby Fisher, Justine Sky, Hire, Satsang, and many more.
