In honor of the Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr., National Park Service sites will waive entrance fees for everyone on Monday, January 17, 2022, as the first fee free day of the year. Commemorated on the third Monday of January every year, it is also a day of service when hundreds of volunteers participate in service projects at parks across the country.

Find volunteer opportunities inspired by a day of service or attend a ranger program to learn more about the history of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the pursuit of civil rights in America.

If heading to a national park, please remember to recreate responsibly and check the park’s website for hours of operations and other trip planning information.

Day of Service

MLK Day of Service is a defining moment in volunteerism, as Americans across the country step up to make communities more equitable and take action to build the Beloved Community of Dr. King’s dream. While Dr. King believed this community was possible, he acknowledged and fought for systemic change. His example is our call to action.

This is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities. Many national parks traditionally host a variety of service projects that people can sign up for as volunteers.

Find volunteer opportunities inspired by this day of service or look for a volunteer event.

MONTFORD PARK PLAYERS

Since 1972, you, the theater-lovers of WNC have supported us and we’re planning a season full of “thank you”!

With its first small production in the park back in 1972, no one dreamed that we would grow to be one of the premier Shakespeare theater’s in the country, and still be here 50 years later. But here we are.

We couldn’t be prouder of announcing our Golden Jubilee season and, since we’re thinking in round numbers, we’re expanding each of our season’s offerings to 5 weeks!

Here’s a peek at what’s on tap!

Opening 5/6/2022 – As You Like It, by William Shakespeare
Our season kick-off continues our tradition of opening with a comedy, and this is one of the Bard’s best!

Opening 6/10/2022 – The Little Prince
We’re bringing this beloved family classic to the stage. Just in time for summer vacation!

Opening 7/15/2022 – Much Ado about Nothing, by William Shakespeare

“For the first time, we’re expanding the run of every show to five weeks, in order to give even more of our patrons the opportunity to see great live theatre! Our 50th season will be a stellar one, including a North Carolina premiere, and will feature some great Shakespearean comedies along with his most famous tragedy, along with two productions that are sure to delight our youth audience as well.”, according to John Russell, Executive Director.

We hope you’ll start making plans for the new year to include some glorious time at the Amphitheatre. We know we’ll be there!

MONTFORD PARK PLAYERS Announce 2022 SEASON
Jan 22 @ 9:00 am – 9:00 pm

One of Shakespeare’s most popular and funniest shows takes us through the hottest months.

Opening 8/19/2022 – The Three Musketeers, by Catherine Bush
A new adaptation by the Playwright-in-Residence at The Barter Theatre. A WNC Premiere!

Opening 9/23/2022 – Hamlet, by William Shakespeare
We enter a somber autumn with this most-somber tale. You know it, even if you’ve never seen it. Don’t miss it!
