Saturday August, 17 9amRun beside an active runway!  The Runway 5K is exciting and unique – with exciting changes this year!

Ready to run the FLATTEST 5K in the mountains?  How about a morning with music, local food trucks (think coffee and pastries) and better-than-ever plane spotting?

Asheville Regional Airport looks forward to welcoming you to the airfield!  

Our race is the most unique 5K in the mountains – it’s completely FLAT, and hey – it’s on the airfield of the airport.  Racers will run on Taxiway Bravo, beside our active Runway 17-35.  And NEW this year – we’re moving the entire event to a new location on the north side of the airfield, so all attendees will be much closer to the taxiway and runway in the festival area. Be sure to wave to the passengers in the planes that will be taking off and landing while you run!  What are you waiting for?

*Note: The race will be held, rain or shine.  If an unforeseen circumstance causes the race to cancel, a new date will be chosen in Spring 2025, and all registered participants will be notified.  No refunds will be issued.

The Runway 5K raises funds to support local aviation scholarships administered by both A-B Tech Department of Aviation and the Western North Carolina Pilots Association Educational Foundation, as well as funds to support Big Brothers Big Sisters of WNC.

The event will take place on the north end of the airfield, with parking in a nearby area. All participants will be shuttled to the event site, which is in a secure area near the airfield. Food trucks offering coffee, pastries and donuts will be at the event, as well as music, merchandise, special photo opportunities and more.

The AVL Runway 5K is brought to the region in partnership with Hunter Subaru, Gresham Smith, Hensel Phelps, and Paradies Lagardere. Additional sponsors to date include: Avcon, SM&E, CHA and Tennoca.

River Snorkeling

Time for you to see our mountain streams from a new perspective. River Snorkeling is a fast growing hobby that allows you to see a whole world just under the surface of the water. *All participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. No charge for adults attending who do no wish to get in the water/snorkel but everyone must register in advance to account for limited seating. For those who would like a ride in the van, participants will meet at 70 Gashes Creek Rd, Asheville, NC 28805.

*Each participant will be given a wetsuit, wetsuit socks, snorkels & masks. Life Jackets can be provided by request. Participants should provide shoes that can get wet and securely attach to your feet.

*Van transportation is provided.

*This program is weather dependent and may be rescheduled based on safe water levels in the river.

Kids Fishing Tournaments: For young anglers, the first kids fishing tournament will be taking place on April 13 at Charles D. Owen Park from 8-11:30 a.m. There will also be kids fishing tournaments at Lake Julian Park on May 4 and August 24, from 8-11:30 a.m. These events are open to all youth 15 and under. Competitors will be divided into age groups (0-5, 6-10, and 11-15) with prizes in each for biggest fish caught, smallest fish caught, and most fish caught. The admission for these fishing tournaments is $10, which includes bait, beverages, and grab-n-go breakfast items. Pre-registration is encouraged.
