The Biltmore Estate has been planning the largest exhibition in its historic gardens for almost a decade. And finally, last week, Chihuly at Biltmore opened with a mega installation of glass sculptures from the famous artist Dale Chihuly. Tens of thousands of glass pieces from all around the world reside in 14 locations around the Estate (which is the very first large-scale N.C. Chihuly installation).
The exhibition is up from now until Oct. 7th, free admission with a Biltmore day pass (and free for annual pass holders). Chihuly at Nightis a special, ongoing event where the glass sculptures are lit up, plus live music in the gardens + a wine bar. Three new works were blown just for Biltmore, and 6 new compositions were put together.
Open 7:30 – 11:30 p.m. Advance tickets are rquired. It’s safe, scary fun for the whole family! Kids will enjoy the Halloween shows and trick-or-treating. And take a chilling journey into the night on the Ghost Train – if you dare!

Would you rather spend your time doing just about ANYTHING else, even cleaning your studio? Then this is the class for you! Join Gabriel each Friday as he demystifies the techniques that will help you learn to love the glazing process, achieve more dynamic results, and get your work noticed. Topics will include under and overglaze decoration, glazing large and delicate work, spraying glazes, and multiple firings. Tuition: $255 + $35 Lab Fee
When reflecting on the current state of the environment, it seems that we have entered into times of seismic sorrows. Carbon emissions, water pollution, fracking, and changing climate patterns all point to a troubling reality with serious consequences for human and non-human populations. Through weavings, installations, sculpture, and print, artists Rena Detrixhe and Tali Weinberg (Tulsa, OK) explore the complex relationship between humans and the planet, offering insights, expressing grief, and creating space for resilience and change.
In Time of Seismic Sorrows is curated by Marilyn Zapf and organized by the Center for Craft. The Center for Craft is supported in part by the N.C. Arts Council, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.

Chihuly at Biltmore represents the first art exhibition in Biltmore’s historic gardens, and the first garden exhibition of Dale Chihuly’s works in North Carolina. The world-renowned American artist’s work is included in more than 200 museum collections worldwide, and now, for a limited time only, they can be seen at Biltmore.
We invite you to immerse yourself in this unique visual experience, an absolute must-see presentation of unparalleled artistic expression.
Dazzling in daylight, the exhibition takes on an entirely new dimension when viewed after nightfall; experience the brilliance and beauty of these awe-inspiring marvels of color, form, and light.
Have you ever wanted to scale up the size of your work, but weren’t sure how? The sky is the limit in this class, so let’s go big! Join Mac McCusker as you learn to make large, freestanding floor vases with slabs and coils. You can then theme your piece by adding imagery to the leather hard clay. Demonstrations will include experimenting with carving, additive methods, surface design, sgraffito, underglazes, and the use of decals to achieve a visually stunning finished piece. All skill levels are welcome.
Level: All Levels
Tuition: $255 + $35 Lab Fee

The Holy Ghost Speakeasy and Revival: A reading and talk with author Terry Roberts
Jedidiah Robbins is a man on a crusade. From town to town, his Gospel train rides the rails of 1920s Appalachia, spreading the Good News with his daughter and a loyal group of roustabouts in tow. But Jedidiah’s traveling revival company has a secret: in addition to offering the gifts of the Holy Spirit, it also delivers spirits of another kind. Prohibition is in full swing, but The Sword of the Lord train keeps the speakeasies in the towns it visits in business by providing the best that mountain stills have to offer. While beyond the gaze of federal agents, the operation eventually runs afoul of an overzealous small-town sheriff and a corrupt judge, setting in motion a series of events that could land them all in chains. Told with haunting lyricism, this is the story of a preacher full of contradictions, a man for whom the way is never straight and narrow. It bends like the river, a river that leads him in the paths of a different brand of righteousness—and perhaps even to salvation.
Author of The Holy Ghost Speakeasy and Revival (Turner Publishing, 2018), Terry Roberts’ direct ancestors have lived in the mountains of Western North Carolina since the time of the Revolutionary War. His family farmed in the Big Pine section of Madison County for generations and is also prominent in the Madison County town of Hot Springs, a consistent setting in his novels. Among his forebears are prominent bootleggers and preachers but no one who, like Jedidiah Robbins, from The Holy Ghost Speakeasy and Revival, combines both occupations. His debut novel, A Short Time to Stay Here, won the Willie Morris Award for Southern Fiction, and his second novel, That Bright Land, won the Thomas Wolfe Memorial Literary Award as well as the James Still Award for Writing about the Appalachian South. Both novels won the annual Sir Walter Raleigh Award for Fiction, given to the author of the best novel written by a North Carolinian. Born and raised near Weaverville, North Carolina, Roberts is the Director of the National Paideia Center and lives in Asheville, North Carolina. He has three children: Jesse, Margaret, and Henry.
“In his latest novel, Terry Roberts has created an unforgettable character in Jedidiah Robbins, a reverend who delivers both sermons and whiskey to his followers, but his novel transcends mere satire to become much more. Ultimately, The Holy Ghost Speakeasy and Revival contemplates complex questions of faith and morality in a world ripe with hypocrisy. Terry Roberts is an immensely gifted writer and he gets better with each book. Bravo!” – Ron Rash, author of Serena and The Risen
Appalachian Evenings are free of charge and all are welcome. The event will be held in the Ramsey Center, which is located inside Renfro Library on the campus of Mars Hill University.
For events that happen before 6pm on a weekday, please park in the lot on Bailey Street just next to the Greenway – across the street from Chambers Gym. After 6pm, visitors may park in any available green or white parking space, even if it is designated “faculty” or “students.”

French Broad Brewery presents Jordyn Pepper, Thursday, Sept. 27th from 6 PM to 8 PM.
This Nashville based, but Colorado raised young artist is the perfect blend of organic, deep-mountain roots, folk (with a little splash of soft blues), rock and country. Put it all together and you have the makings of an Americana artist. Her name is Jordyn Pepper, and she has something to sing about. Recently signed to Howlin’ Dog Records Jordyn just released her freshman album “Mountain Rain.” Her first single “Back to My Roots” was released earlier last year followed by her second single “1862” both from the album. She also is proud of her official music video for “1862” which can be viewed on Youtube. This Nashville based singer/songwriter is described by many as a breath of fresh air, with crystal-clear vocals and a uniqueness that only says, “That’s Jordyn Pepper.” “We here at Howlin’ Dog hear shades of Loretta Lynn, Natalie Maines, Stevie Nicks and others in the lineage of great female singers, but most of all we hear Jordyn Pepper, weaving all of these threads into a seamless expression of a young woman venturing out into the world,” Don Richmond, engineer/producer at Howlin’ Dog, said. 2016 & 2017 WINNER for Vocalist of the Year for Folk/Americana/Bluegrass – The Josie Music Awards

FREE PATIO SHOW :: Carrie Morrison at The Grey Eagle
Carrie is a singer/songwriter/pianist whose style has a big range – Celtic, blues, folk, rock, and a whole bunch of other styles she couldn’t possibly categorize (as she has no idea what they are). She writes strong melodies and wise lyrics. Her ballads break your heart in the best way, and her blues-y wit makes creates a wry smile. Carrie, an exceptional children’s teacher in Transylvania County, has lived in WNC for 15 years, and has been a working musician most of that time. She released her first full-length album, Miles and Miles, in fall 2017. The project was produced by Chris Rosser of Free Planet Radio. Her EP, Carolina Blonde, produced by the late Terry Wetton, was released in 2014. She performs regularly in WNC venues, and collaborates with many regional musicians onstage and in the studio. An avid hiker when not gigging, Carrie loves the mountains and the artistic community here. She is grateful to share her music and connect with her audiences.

Join us for a moderated Town Hall, featuring candidates for US House Districts 10 and 11. We’ll be focusing on the issues facing WNC voters.
We had hoped this event would be a debate, so the voters would have a chance to hear both candidates, and fully understand the differences in political philosophies. But neither of the incumbent candidates, Mark Meadows (R) District 11, or Patrick McHenry (R) District 10, accepted our invitation. We reached out to both candidates inviting them to participate. Patrick McHenry’s Gastonia office said they would check and get back with us. We attempted to follow up, with both the office, and his campaign manager, but our calls were never returned.
Mark Meadows office told us that Rep. Meadows would only participate in one debate, and that debate would be at Western Carolina University in October. We have been unable to confirm that event, and at this date, Phillip Price (D) hasn’t received notice of the event.
We’ll do our best to give a fair summary of both Representatives track record on the topics We’ve invited all four candidates for District 10 and District 11 to a moderated town hall forum focused on the issues facing WNC voters.
