Laura Blackley and the Wildflowers
Jan 5 @ 8:00 pm – 11:30 pm
Pisgah Brewing Company

FREE SHOW
Laura Blackley is a singer, songwriter and purveyor of high lonesome Appalachian blues and soul. She was an on-air host and producer for seven years at WNCW 88.7 FM in Spindale, NC, spotlighting regional music, women in roots music, and bluegrass and old-time. She currently works (in addition to her gig schedule) as a Teaching Artist with Musicworks!, a program that utilizes music and musicianship to teach life skills to young children. A born storyteller, she has played in many bands, traveled many back roads and interstates and enjoys digging up old tunes and hearing the stories behind them. She believes that music has a healing power and is a communal act, and is very much looking forward to the next gig.

The Wildflowers are Ian Harrod on bass and vocals, Josh Gibbs on lap steel, Richard Foulk on drums. And sometimes awesome guests like Lyndsay Pruett on fiddle and Dorsey Parker on ‘lectric guitar.

Letters to Abigail LIVE at Sanctuary Brewing Company
Jan 5 @ 8:00 pm – 11:00 pm
Sanctuary Brewing Company

Letters to Abigail IS AN APPALACHIAN/AMERICANA BAND BASED IN WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA. SOME FOLKS DESCRIBE THEIR MUSIC AS A SIMPLE SOUTHERN PLEASURE. DIGGING DOWN INTO THE ROOTS OF THE REGION, THEY BLEND A CLASSIC APPROACH TO A NEW ORIGINAL SOUND, DRENCHED IN POWERFUL LYRICS, ACOUSTIC MELODIES AND SOULFUL HARMONIES.

THE STORY STARTS OUT LIKE IT SHOULD HAVE TAKEN PLACE IN NEW YORK TWO GENERATIONS AGO OR PERHAPS ON A MOVIE SET IN HOLLYWOOD TODAY: THE GIRL WAS WORKING IN A WINDOWLESS BAR HIDDEN AWAY IN THE BACK OF ANOTHER BUSINESS WHEN THE STRANGER WALKED IN WITH A GUITAR, BEGAN PLAYING AND SINGING, AND SUDDENLY SHE WAS AWARE OF NOTHING BUT HIS VOICE. CAPTIVATED, SHE INTRODUCED HERSELF AND THE TWO SOON VENTURED OUT INTO THE WORLD TO MAKE MUSICAL HISTORY.

CHANGE A FEW DETAILS AND THE REALITY OF LETTERS TO ABIGAIL IS NOT FAR REMOVED FROM THIS TALE.

SEVEN YEARS AGO, KELLI REDMOND WAS WORKING AT THE BACK ROOM, A SMALL MUSIC VENUE TUCKED AWAY IN THE BACK OF THE FLAT ROCK WINE SHOPPE. IT WAS OPEN MIC NIGHT AND JAMES HARRELL WAS THERE TO PARTAKE IN THE EVENING’S FESTIVITIES, UNBEKNOWNST TO THE FACT THAT THIS EVENING WAS ABOUT TO CHANGE EVERYTHING ABOUT HIS MUSICAL PATH. “I THOUGHT HE SOUNDED FANTASTIC” REDMOND SAYS, RECALLING HER FIRST IMPRESSION OF HARRELL. “I WAS ALREADY DOING THIS MUSIC THING IN MY LIVING ROOM WHERE A BUNCH OF US WOULD PLAY TOGETHER SO I INVITED HIM TO JOIN US.”

THE REST, AS THE CLICHÉ GOES, IS HISTORY. AS SOON AS THEY FIRST PLAYED TOGETHER THEY NOTICED HOW WELL THEIR VOICES COMPLEMENTED EACH OTHER “LIKE IT WAS MEANT TO BE” SHE SAYS WITH A TONE THAT STILL SOUNDS AS EXCITED AS SHE MUST HAVE BEEN WHEN THIS ALL FIRST HAPPENED.

FROM THIS CHANCE ENCOUNTER LETTERS TO ABIGAIL WAS BORN. THE DUO IS A MODERN DAY STRING BAND WITH A DISTINCTLY OLD TIME FEEL AND IT IS EASY TO SEE WHAT DREW THE TWO MUSICIANS TOGETHER. WHEN REDMOND AND HARRELL SING TOGETHER IN HARMONY IT REALLY DOES FEEL LIKE THE TWO WERE DESIGNED WITH THE EXPRESS PURPOSE OF BEING BAND MATES. WHETHER IT IS A HEARTFELT LOVE SONG LIKE “ANGEL IN ORDINARY SHOES” OR AN UPBEAT AND CATCHY BREAK-UP SONG LIKE “LEAVE THE LEAVIN’” THE DUO SOUNDS LIKE MASTERS OF THEIR GENRE, BOTH MUSICALLY AND LYRICALLY.

IN REALITY, LETTERS TO ABIGAIL IS STILL IN THE EARLY STAGES OF WHAT PROMISES TO BE A LONG AND SUCCESSFUL MUSICAL JOURNEY. THEY RECORDED THEIR FIRST ALBUM “SAY ANYTHING” IN 2013 WHICH MADE WNCW’S LIST OF TOP 100 RELEASES OF THE YEAR. REDMOND ADMITS, THOUGH, THAT THE ALBUM WAS HEAVILY INFLUENCED BY WHAT EACH OF THEM HAD BEEN DOING BEFORE THEY TEAMED UP. IT WAS A COMING TOGETHER OF “WHAT HE WROTE AND WHAT I WROTE” THAT THEY HAD POLISHED AND PRESENTED AS A DUO, AS OPPOSED TO A COMPLETELY JOINT EFFORT BY THE BAND.

ALL OF THAT CHANGED WHEN THEY RECORDED THEIR SOON-TO-BE RELEASED SELF-TITLED FOLLOW UP ALBUM. REDMOND PROMISES A MORE ECLECTIC ALBUM THAT REPRESENTS THE DUO’S WORK WRITING THEIR MUSIC AS A TEAM. “IT’S A LITTLE BIT OF A MOSH PIT” IN TERMS OF STYLE SHE PROMISES WITH A LAUGH. AS AN EXAMPLE SHE SPECIFICALLY MENTIONS THE INCLUSION OF A MURDER BALLAD, A BLUES TUNE, HEARTFELT LOVE SONGS, UPLIFTING TRACKS, AND EVEN A “SLOW, RAINY DAY KIND OF TUNE” COMING IN THE FORM OF “TAKE ME AWAY,” ORIGINALLY MADE POPULAR BY HAYES CARLL. THE RESULT IS AN ALBUM TRULY REPRESENTATIVE OF LETTERS TO ABIGAIL’S TALENT AND, SPECIFICALLY, THEIR LIVE PERFORMANCES, OF WHICH THEY PERFORM WELL OVER 100 TIMES A YEAR.

Dori Freeman is a singer and songwriter from southwestern Virginia. Her voice is distinct and versatile, slipping easily from Country to folk to gospel. Her songwriting is lyrically honest and frank bolstered by delicate and weaving melodies. She comes from a family of musicians and artists and childhood beginnings in traditional and old-time music. Our House Pres: Chris Fortier
Jan 5 @ 9:00 pm – Jan 6 @ 2:00 am
Asheville Music Hall

Genre: Electronic
Tickets: $15
Show: 9:00pm – 2:00am
Ages: 21+

Chris Fortier

There are few individuals within the underground dance music industry able to match Chris Fortier for both influence and achievement over the last two decades. With a mandate predicated upon the deceptively simple notion of “constant musical evolution”, the founder and owner of the globally renowned Fade Records, is not constrained by boundaries, reflected in both the music he plays and creates.

An extensive list of achievements is testament to such elevated ideals, perhaps best showcased by the iconic 2005 “Balance 007” compilation; a groundbreaking CD at the vanguard of a fresh, innovative and underground sound movement, that history would later record as an aural blueprint for the worldwide dance music explosion that followed in the subsequent decade and beyond. A further eight commercially released mix albums would also contain the Chris Fortier DNA.

As a production artist, Fortier’s portfolio of skills have been crafted and honed through an intimate 20-year knowledge of clubs across the globe’s dance-floor capitals – from Tokyo, Melbourne, Mexico City to Budapest and Buenos Aires to residencies at the legendary AAHZ in Orlando in the early 90’s through to New York’s Twilo and London’s The Cross. Always in demand and prolific in output, a continually rising 400 plus Beatport production credits tell only half of an impressive story. Fortier’s remix of Delerium’s “Silence”, was the first and original remix and sold in excess of one million copies worldwide; while work for John Digweed’s Bedrock imprint further cemented an ever-growing reputation alongside the full-length album, “As Long As The Moment Exists” and its follow-up remix album on behemoth Australian imprint, EQ.

Never one to rest on his proverbial laurels, Chris’ productions have seen him take on the mantle of highly regarded modern producer with releases spanning the underground sound including most recently on Bedrock, Selador, Balance, Mooseeka, Tulipa, Maya, Manual, Ground Factory, Maktub, Mindwarp and his own imprint Fade. His remixes and collaborations since 2009 tell their own tale, as Chris remains as integral, relevant and at the leading edge in the Underground as ever. With an innate and immaculate sense of what makes the industry tick, built upon longstanding personal experience, Fortier’s musical evolution shows no sign of extinction.

Reclaimed Creations
Jan 6 @ 8:00 am – 6:00 pm
NC Arboretum

Reclaimed Creations is a unique sculpture exhibit created by renowned artist Sayaka Ganz. Utilizing reclaimed plastic objects, such as discarded utensils, Ganz creates amazing sculptures that visually appear unified at a distance, but are in fact separated when examined up close. Described as using a “3D impressionistic” style, Ganz’s exhibit includes installations of animals in motion, which are in rich in color and energy, to create an illusion of form.

About the Artist

Born in Yokohama, Japan, Sayaka Ganz grew up living in Japan, Brazil and Hong Kong. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Indiana University, Bloomington, and a Master of Fine Arts degree in sculpture from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. A lecturer and teacher, Ganz’s work has been displayed at various institutions around the globe, including the Hermann Geiger Foundation in Cecina, Italy, the Isle Gallery in Isle of Man, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California.

My work is about perceiving harmony, even in situations that appear chaotic from the inside. When observing my sculptures up close, one might see gaps, holes and items being held on only by small points; step away, however, and the sculptures reveal the harmony created when the objects are aligned to the same general (but not identical) direction. Similarly, it is important to gain perspective by stepping back from current problems and look at the larger picture. Then one can perceive the beauty and patterns that exist.”

In Times of Seismic Sorrows
Jan 6 @ 10:00 am – 6:00 pm
Center for Craft

When reflecting on the current state of the environment, it seems that we have entered into times of seismic sorrows. Carbon emissions, water pollution, fracking, and changing climate patterns all point to a troubling reality with serious consequences for human and non-human populations. Through weavings, installations, sculpture, and print, artists Rena Detrixhe and Tali Weinberg (Tulsa, OK) explore the complex relationship between humans and the planet, offering insights, expressing grief, and creating space for resilience and change.

In Time of Seismic Sorrows is curated by Marilyn Zapf and organized by the Center for Craft. The Center for Craft is supported in part by the N.C. Arts Council, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.

A Matter of Taste Exhibit
Jan 6 @ 12:00 pm – 6:00 pm
The Bascom...A Visual Arts Center

As Virginia Woolf said, “one cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well.” Food and water are essential for survival, but mankind’s relationship to food has transformed over time from one of sustenance to one laden with personal and cultural significance.

A Matter of Taste explores depictions of food and drink in art and reveals how images of fruits and vegetables can function as complex metaphors for excess, status, memory, and politics. Drawn from southern museums and private collections, this exhibition showcases over 35 paintings, decorative arts, and works on paper by artists such as Andy Warhol, Wayne Thiebaud, Henri Cartier-Bresson and Claes Oldenburg.

This show spans 400 years and multiple continents, revealing the evolving role of food and drink in various media and cultural contexts. While depictions of fruit and vegetables appeared in ancient times, still life painting as an independent genre dates to 16th-century Holland.

In 19th-century America, still life paintings remained popular but evolved in terms of subject matter, media, and message. Painters such as Thomas Wightman, George Forster, and De Scott Evans embraced Dutch still lifes and used food as commentary on the current political climate and the transient state of the human condition.

Illustrated newspapers led to an increase of cartoons by artists such as Winslow Homer and William Hogarth, who utilized food and drink as social satire. The 20th-century modern art movement further changed the perception of food. The culture of mass production enabled Pop artists to elevate seemingly mundane foodstuffs to high art. Yet, other contemporary artists explored the symbolic and nostalgic role of food seen in works by Tim Tate, Linda Armstrong, and Laquita Thomson.

Visitors will also experience an elaborately set dining table fit for a sumptuous feast. Dining became its own art form over time and communicated one’s social standing and wealth. Each of the table’s six place settings represent a different culture and offer a glimpse into global dining customs. Selective drinkware will accompany this section revealing how tea sets and even punch bowls reflected an owner’s prestige.

Sacred Smoke: Fumitory Plants and Cultural Appropriation
Jan 6 @ 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm
Asheville Raven & Crone

All cultures used smoke in ritual and medicine. Today there are many hard conversations about the sustainable use of White Sage specifically and other threatened sacred plants used by indigenous peoples in North America. There are plants that people of non-indigenous ancestry can happily use for the purpose that White Sage has come to occupy and also to combat the destruction of sacred plant populations and the continuous disregard for the needs of indigenous peoples and their cultural and religious life.

We’ll meet a plethora of plants used for their sacred smoke from many countries that grow abundantly around us. Please join me for this complex and important conversation and learning opportunity. A booklet on the plants will be available for purchase in paper or download.

5- 20$ Sliding scale.
