Manna Food Distribution every third Tuesday at 2:30pm
Most people know that our bodies need fat for insulation, energy, and protection, but our cultural relationship with this macronutrient has been tenuous at best for over fifty years. Even cooks who have embraced putting natural fats back into their foods are often still confused about sources, uses, and safety. “Fat is making a comeback,” says Asheville-based food writer and chef Meredith Leigh, “but we still have a long way to go.” Leigh serves as Education and Outreach Coordinator at Living Web Farms, where she will teach a class all about fat as an essential element of cooking, this coming July 17 th at 6pm at the farm in Mills River. Leigh shares that there are still people who regard fat as a food to fear, and then there are people who have allowed fat back into their cooking, on a limited level. “It’s not uncommon to run into cooks who are no longer afraid, but are only using two types of fat in their kitchen, because someone told them that was the only way to eat.” It turns out, there’s a lot more to the story about fat, and a host of other reasons to let our relationship with it mature and deepen.

Many of us are busy planning summer vacations, gatherings, and picnics ahead of July. But for over 100,000 Western North Carolina residents busy trying to make ends meet to provide for their most basic needs, that kind of celebration is out of the question.
That is why the nationally recognized WNC beer scene is collaborating again, and raising the stakes, to bring awareness to the issue of hunger in Western North Carolina. Over twenty local breweries are joining forces to help support MANNA FoodBank’s mission to end hunger for thousands of families across WNC through the 2nd annual Hops for Hunger campaign, July 1st – 31st.
Hops for Hunger is made possible through support from Asheville Ale Trail, and MANNA’s annual sponsors: Preserve Communities, Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort, Anurja Interactive, The Cantina at Historic Biltmore Village, Mast General Store, and Lamar Advertising.
Every Saturday in July the park stays open late, until 9:00 p.m., so you can make more time for family memories. Enjoy evening train and stage shows, rides at dusk, and fun throughout the park.

The 30th anniversary season of Downtown After 5, presented by Prestige Subaru, kicks off Friday, May 18 from 5-9pm. Downtown After 5 takes place the 3rd Friday of the month May – September and is held on North Lexington Avenue. Events are free and open to the public.
On Friday, July 20th, the Asheville Comedy Community comes together to raise funds for the family of the late local comedian Michael Roach. The benefit will feature Asheville’s best comedians with shows at 7:00PM and 9:30PM

And so, they were banished, sent away on a fool’s errand to conquer an insignificant shitball floating in a dark corner of the universe; the planet Earth. Once here, GWAR shaped the face of the globe, destroying and rebuilding the natural world, and giving rise to all of human history. Aliens to some, gods and demons to others, our erstwhile Scumdogs fucked apes to create the human race, and this fateful unplanned pregnancy would prove to be truly disastrous!
Their new album, “The Blood of Gods” is nothing less than a sacred text chronicling the rise of humanity against their makers, and the massive battle between GWAR and the forces of all that is uptight and wrong with the world. Along the way, the band challenges the sins of their great mistake, from politics, pollution, and organized religion, to fast food, and factory farming. Humans are shown as what they are; a parasitical disease that must be eradicated before they suck the planet dry. Bikes and Beers is THRILLED to be coming to Mills River and Asheville for 2 events this summer.
Bikes and Beers is hosting an event at Sierra Nevada in Mills River on July 21 that benefits the Blue Ridge Bicycle Club and an event at New Belgium in Asheville that benefits Asheville on Bikes. Both events feature a 15 and 30-mile ride that starts and ends at the brewery with an after party at the brewery. We host rides all around the country at some of the best breweries in the country.
