Southern Sixer Hiking Challenge
Did you know more than 40 peaks in the Southern Appalachians of NC and TN reach over 6,000 feet elevation? And, most of these “Southern Sixer” summits fall within Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy’s six conservation focus areas. (The map below shows Southern Sixer locations relative to our focus areas).
Many of these peaks can be accessed from public lands and trails — such as Mt. Mitchell, Roan High Knob, Mount Kephart, and Black Balsam Knob.
In 2017 we launched the Southern Sixer Hiking Challenge, to challenge YOU to summit at least six of these 6,000+ ft. peaks and receive a commemorative patch!

5th Annual July 4th Freedom Gala: Picnic and Bike Ride
Southern Sixer Hiking Challenge
Sunday Hike DAy
Consider Haiti’s 5th Annual July 4th Freedom Gala Benefit will be held in-person once again on Sunday, July 4th, 2021!
You can be a part of a great cause while still having loads of fun. All proceeds will go to Consider Haiti, a local 501c non-profit that provides sustainable food, clean water, and medical care to children in Haiti.

Bike Ride Info: (sponsored by Downtown Asheville Racing Club (DARC)
There will be multiple bike ride options based on skill level including:
• A gravel and/or mixed surface ride that starts at 8:30 am
• A family ride only that starts at 10:30 am
• For information on bike routes, details, and pricing, click here.
• If you register for bike ride on or before June 16th, you will receive a free t-shirt with your registration.
Meal Info: (sponsored by Chop Shop Butchery, Siemens Family Law Group and Patton Parker House)
• Picnic meal on the lawn starts at 6:00 pm and ends at 10:30 pm and includes live music by the fabulous, Barsters.
• Meal will include: shredded pork & buns, baked beans, potato salad. There will be a vegetarian option. BYOB
• There will be PLENTY of parking for the event.
• Guests will have plenty of room to spread out on the lawn with gorgeous sunset views of downtown Asheville skyline. We do encourage guest to bring their own lawn chairs and/or blankets but seating will be provided as well.

Lookout Trail Hike in Montreat Details
Difficulty: Moderate
Length: 1.4 miles round trip (with the option of adding other trails for a longer hike)
Region: Montreat
Duration of hike: 1 Hour

Features: Pet Friendly, Views
If traveling from downtown Asheville, you can be stepping on the Lookout Trail in Montreat in about 25 minutes and, after a brisk hike, stepping off it under an hour later. Rock outcroppings near the peak make for perfect picnicking, and the horizon is dotted with the peaks of the Seven Sisters of the Black Mountains.
Fall color is spectacular here, but the views are impressive any time of year. The trail is steep and includes a few scrambles at the top, but the views are well worth the effort.
The trailhead is marked by a wooden sign that features an area map and other information. The trail is relatively steep but does begin with gentle slopes. Once you pass this section, you’ll cross over the wide, flat Old Trestle Road. Keep going straight up rather than turning left or right on the road. On the upper part of the trail, you’ll encounter some rough and rooty sections, steep wooden steps and, a few scrambles up rocks. From here, you reach the impressive views of the surrounding peaks of the Seven Sisters that can be seen from the rock outcroppings.
Lookout Rock is the official end of trail, but you can scramble up a little further to the top of the ridge on Lookout Mountain. From here, you can go back down the way you came or connect to one of the other trails to extend your hike (the brief Hickory Ridge Trail starts on the ridge top and connects to several other trails).

Auditions held atThe Autumn Players will be performing a readers theater program of two delightful one-act comedies this summer at Attic Salt Theatre (while ACT is closed). The program is called Love, Marriage and the Irish!: Two Comic One-Acts by JM Barrie and George Bernard Shaw. Fireworks fly in the drawing room as an unexpected visitor sends Harry Sims Into a tailspin on the day before he is to be knighted in JM Barrie’s delightful play The Twelve Pound Look. And George Bernard Shaw infuses comedy into the terrible experience of war in O’Flaherty, V.C. as he depicts an Irish soldier trying to come to terms with what it means to be a hero. The Twelve Pound Look will be directed by Jim Reid and O’Flaherty, V.C. will be directed by Ellen Pappas. The plays will be performed as reader’s theatre. All are welcome to audition! |

Fern Way Farm School Summer Camps
Southern Sixer Hiking Challenge
Fern Way Farm School summer camps are open to and inclusive of EVERYONE! All the camps are set at a sliding-scale price system, and families may pick the respective price option that works for their budget and family. Fern Way believes everyone should have access to beautiful places to tend, play and explore.
Descriptions of the camps are below! More info can be found here:
• The Fern Way Farm School Family Camp June 13-17 offers outdoor fun for all ages. Hike our 6+ miles of trails and cool streams, do some gardening, play with our chickens, cook together with fresh produce and stay in our cozy cabins together.
• Marvel & Mystery summer camps this July are for kids in grades K-5. They will spend their days outside exploring trails, learning about forest plants and creatures, gardening and spending time with chickens.
• At Fern Way Farm School’s Curiosity & Connection Overnight Camp for middle schoolers from July 27-30, campers will get to choose from fun and educational sessions involving wildcraft skills, nature art, outdoor cooking + more!
• High schoolers may attend an overnight camp June 28-July 2, where they will spend time outdoors gardening, hiking and exploring, learning about interconnection in our beautiful, yet often uncertain and confusing, world.
• Girls will have SO MUCH FUN at a special Girls on the Run summer camp! Designed specifically for girls in grades 3-5, campers will be empowered to learn about positive self-esteem and community engagement through gardening, hiking and other outdoor activities. This camp integrates the powerful Girls on the Run curriculum and is supported by Girls on the Run of WNC

Audition for Clue!

AUDITION DATES: Monday, August 2 and Tuesday, August 3, 2021; 5:30-7:30 pm **Please come prepared to wear a mask, except when auditioning onstage.** Audition sides may be viewed and downloaded HERE.
VIDEO AUDTIONS: If unable to attend in person, you may submit a video application HERE. Applications are due by Tuesday, August 3 at 10:00pm. Please prepare this Wadsworth monologue. Actors are welcome to perform a piece of their own choosing in addition, however the Wadsworth monologue must be included in their video submission for consideration.
PRODUCTION DATES: October 15-November 7, 2021; Performances Friday and Saturday nights at 7:30 pm, Sunday afternoons at 2:30 pm. Cast must plan to arrive at least 1 hour prior to show time.
REHEARSALS: Rehearsals begin August 16, 2021; full rehearsal calendar available at auditions – you are able to list any conflicts you have with the rehearsal schedule at this time. Tech Week will take place over two weeks; casts are expected to attend October 3-7 AND either October 12-14 or October 19-21.
DIRECTOR SEEKS: 11 actors; Actors of any gender identity, race or ethnicity will be considered for any desired role indicated on their audition sheet. All roles will be presented as they are gendered in the script.

Actors are welcome to perform a piece of their own choosing in addition, however the Wadsworth monologue must be included in their video submission for consideration.
PRODUCTION DATES: October 15-November 7, 2021; Performances Friday and Saturday nights at 7:30 pm, Sunday afternoons at 2:30 pm. Cast must plan to arrive at least 1 hour prior to show time.
REHEARSALS: Rehearsals begin August 16, 2021; full rehearsal calendar available at auditions – you are able to list any conflicts you have with the rehearsal schedule at this time. Tech Week will take place over two weeks; casts are expected to attend October 3-7 AND either October 12-14 or October 19-21.
DIRECTOR SEEKS: 11 actors; Actors of any gender identity, race or ethnicity will be considered for any desired role indicated on their audition sheet. All roles will be presented as they are gendered in the script.

Many of these peaks can be accessed from public lands and trails — such as Mt. Mitchell, Roan High Knob, Mount Kephart, and Black Balsam Knob.
In 2017 we launched the Southern Sixer Hiking Challenge, to challenge YOU to summit at least six of these 6,000+ ft. peaks and receive a commemorative patch!
Originally started as part of our “For Love of Beer & Mountains” Partnership, the Southern Sixer Challenge has become so popular we’ve decided to keep it going. Since starting the Challenge, many hikers have shared stories and images from their adventures — including the cover photo for our 2018 View from the Highlands newsletter, submitted by Steve Bridges.
