In Times of Seismic Sorrows
Aug 28 @ 10:00 am – 6:00 pm
Center for Craft

When reflecting on the current state of the environment, it seems that we have entered into times of seismic sorrows. Carbon emissions, water pollution, fracking, and changing climate patterns all point to a troubling reality with serious consequences for human and non-human populations. Through weavings, installations, sculpture, and print, artists Rena Detrixhe and Tali Weinberg (Tulsa, OK) explore the complex relationship between humans and the planet, offering insights, expressing grief, and creating space for resilience and change.

In Time of Seismic Sorrows is curated by Marilyn Zapf and organized by the Center for Craft. The Center for Craft is supported in part by the N.C. Arts Council, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.

David Joy presents The Line That Held Us
Aug 28 @ 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm
Malaprop's Bookstore/Cafe

From critically acclaimed author David Joy comes a remarkable novel about the cover-up of an accidental death, and the dark consequences that reverberate through the lives of four people who will never be the same again.

When Darl Moody went hunting after a monster buck he’s chased for years, he never expected he’d accidentally shoot a man digging ginseng. Worse yet, he’s killed a Brewer, a family notorious for vengeance and violence. With nowhere to turn, Darl calls on the help of the only man he knows will answer, his best friend, Calvin Hooper. But when Dwayne Brewer comes looking for his missing brother and stumbles onto a blood trail leading straight back to Darl and Calvin, a nightmare of revenge rips apart their world. The Line That Held Us is a story of friendship and family, a tale balanced between destruction and redemption, where the only hope is to hold on tight, clenching to those you love. What will you do for the people who mean the most, and what will you grasp to when all that you have is gone? The only certainty in a place so shredded is that no one will get away unscathed.

This book is available for purchase in-store, by phone, or online by visiting https://www.malaprops.com/book/9780399574221

We ask that you purchase the books you want to be signed at our events from Malaprop’s. When you do this you are not only supporting the work it takes to run an events program, you are also telling the publishers that they should keep sending authors here.
Can’t make it to the store for the event? Call us or order the book on our website in advance, and we’ll get it signed for you. Make sure you write your preferences in the comments if you purchase online.

MUSIC
The Posey Quartet can’t give you anything but rhythm – and they have SO MUCH to share. This small jazz combo is led by Asheville’s own stride pianist, James ‘Posey’ Posedel. The Posey Quartet performs rhythm-centric arrangements of hot jazz and swing obscurities from historic Storyville, LA to the red light districts of St. Louis. The group is heavily influenced by the likes of Fats Waller, Count Basie, and Jellyroll Morton, and features a balboa-worthy eruption of highly danceable rhythm set to turn-of-the-century Harlem Stride.

BLUES
Band finished and you’re not done dancing? You’re in luck… stick around for our vintage blues hour! Continue dancing to DJ’d music until the bar kicks us out. $2 suggested donation for those coming just for the blues hour.

FOOD: Feeling peckish? The bar has a small selection of vegan goodies to help keep your stamina up! Ask a bartender for more details.

CLASSES
*****************
7pm: Continuing Class: Level-Up Lindy – Momentum & Moves w/ Sparrow & Keith

Lindy hop is all about momentum- keeping it going or changing it smoothly. We will be exploring and honing in on this concept, shining up our swing outs, getting our connections to click, and expanding our repertoire of ideas.

“Continuing” classes are for those dancers who have cemented the basics of the dance being featured that specific month. This includes knowing (and being able to execute cleanly and consistently) basic footwork and lead/follow skills for that dance. Some continuing classes may require no advance knowledge of a dance. This will be noted in the the class description.
*******************

8 pm: Core Class: Intro to 8 Count Lindy Hop w/ Sparrow & Keith

Learn the foundations of the 8 count Lindy Hop, the high energy dance from Harlem that swept the nation and then the globe. Starting from the very beginning, breaking down the steps and rhythms in easy to understand ways, Keith and Sparrow will get ya on the dance floor and having fun in no time. No partner required and drop in friendly, though of course you’ll learn the most if you start at the beginning of the month and stay till the end!

“Core” lessons stress the fundamentals of swing dancing for beginning dancers. Lessons rotate monthly to focus on a different kind of swing dance (6 Count Lindy, 8 Count Lindy, Charleston, Balboa, etc.). Because good fundamentals are hard to develop in one month, we recommend repeating Core lessons (on the same topic) to help develop the solid foundation you’ll need in continuing classes. Core lessons are also great for intermediate and advanced dancers who want to “get back to basics” or learn a different dancing role (lead vs. follow).
*************************

GIFT CERTIFICATES
Do you want to buy a gift certificate for our classes as a gift, or to pre-pay for a block of classes for yourself? You can purchase gift certificates at the door at our weekly dance! They are $40 for a block of 4, and a great way to dive into the fun world of dance.

These are My Hours – Documentary with live score by Lobo Marino
Aug 28 @ 7:30 pm – 10:30 pm
The Mothlight

These Are My Hours –
Documentary Viewing with live score from Lobo Marino
with special guest Utah Green
at The Mothlight
Doors 7pm, Show 7:30
Tickets: $10,
https://www.ticketfly.com/purchase/event/1744677?utm_medium=bks

The #MeToo movement is about the abuse of women, and perhaps nowhere in American society is that more pervasive and insidious than in the authoritarian system which dictates how and where women give birth. Human rights in childbirth is plausibly the next frontier of the #MeToo movement, and THESE ARE MY HOURS, which is the only film shot entirely during a woman’s labor and told from her perspective, stands as an absolutely necessary, feminist response: a raw, intimate, sensory immersion into the primal intensity of the birth process as experienced within the depths of one woman’s body.

For the first time ever… Witness the universally lauded documentary with a live score.

LOBO MARINO
Named after the enormous Pacific Sea Lion, Lobo Marino’s brand of experimental folk draws from a rich palette of international and folk influences.
Built primarily on harmonium, bass drum, banjo and various unique instruments and voices, Lobo Marino continues to evolve as the musical response to the continuous travels and ongoing spiritual journey of its members, Laney Sullivan and Jameson Price.

REVIEWS:
“Whoever watches These Are My Hours becomes a companion, a godparent in this woman’s labor, a participant in a small yet enormous slice of life. The film contrasts the true glory of the female body and its muscular and existential potential: Emily is not just a pregnant woman; she is the primal life-giving woman who wishes to do, can do and does do. This is, simply and in all its complexity, experiencing a revelation – of a new person, who will grow up to view the female naked body naturally, with respect and curiosity, in its beauty and ugliness, the way it really is.” – Leda Galanou, FLIX Magazine

“These Are My Hours is not a documentary about giving birth — it is birth. It follows Emily Graham through her labor, birth, and immediate postpartum. Or rather, we journey with her, inside her, as part of her. I’m not one to use hyperbole, so when I say that this film was revolutionary and groundbreaking and magnificent and shattering, I mean every word.” – Professor Rixa Freeze, PhD.

“I’ve never seen anything like These Are My Hours. Without fear or anxiety, it looks closely at birth, and the body that moves through it, to deliver something that is both emotionally righteous and visually profound. Like its protagonist, the film is unafraid of its own power.” – Carmen Winant, acclaimed artist whose work My Birth is currently featured at the MOMA

“Nothing has ever captured the transformational experience of birth more than These Are My Hours. From the first note of music you know this is not simply a birth documentary, or even the beautiful telling of a birth story. This is a symphony of the utmost intimacy. And in our world of infinite landscapes, you’ll never see one like this… the deep knowing of a laboring woman’s body, her instinctual self.
Please watch this film. It’s transcendent.” – Whapio Bartlett, Birth Educator and founder of The Matrona

“These Are My Hours is the most intimate portrayal of a woman in labor I have ever seen. The power, strength, and everyday miraculousness of birth are all captured in this new homebirth film. I recommend it for all parents-to-be as well as practitioners seeking to expand their trust in birth-giving parents.” – Anne Frye, CPM, author of Holistic Midwifery

“While other documentaries on birth have faithfully recorded and narrated a wide range of birth stories, Kirschenbaum’s brings the viewer close to feeling the sensations of birth… This ability to access the physiology of birth through film on the level of the sensory, as opposed to just the visual, is rare.” – Anna Hennessey, Visiting Scholar, UC Berkeley

“I just finished watching it and loved it. In particular, I appreciate that Emily births with minimal commentary (and that the commentary is limited to her own), disruption, or politicization. The result is a portrayal of birth that requires patience in the absence of sensationalism and/or fear. The audience is presented with a birth that unfolds instead of becoming a glossed-over caricature.” – Kim Dau, RN, MS, CNM, Director, UCSF Nurse-Midwifery/WHNP Education Program
