Film: ENDURING CARE
Feb 6 @ 2:30 pm – 3:30 pm
Asheville Art Museum

The Asheville Art Museum is proud to partner with Visual AIDS for Day With(out) Art 2021 by presenting ENDURING CARE, a video program highlighting strategies of community care within the ongoing HIV epidemic. The program features newly commissioned work by Katherine Cheairs, Cristóbal Guerra, Danny Kilbride, Abdul-Aliy A. Muhammad and Uriah Bussey, Beto Pérez, Steed Taylor, and J Triangular and the Women’s Video Support Project.

From histories of harm reduction and prison activism to the long-term effects of HIV medication, ENDURING CARE centers stories of collective care, mutual aid, and solidarity while pointing to the negligence of governments and non-profits. The program’s title suggests a dual meaning, honoring the perseverance and commitment of care workers yet also addressing the potential for harm from medications and healthcare providers. ENDURING CARE disrupts the assumption that an epidemic can be solved with pharmaceuticals alone, recasting community work as a lasting form of medicine.

Visual AIDS is a New York-based non-profit that utilizes art to fight AIDS by provoking dialogue, supporting HIV+ artists, and preserving a legacy, because AIDS is not over.

Presented in conjunction with Ruminations on MemoryGenerous funding for exhibition programming provided by Art Bridges.

MLK/FBI documentary
Feb 10 @ 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm
Harvest House Community Center

MLK, Jr and J Edgar Hoover

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is remembered today as an American hero: a bridge-builder, a shrewd political tactician, and a moral leader. Yet throughout his history-altering career, he was often harassed and  treated by U.S. intelligence and law enforcement agencies like an enemy of the state. This acclaimed documentary lays out a detailed account of the FBI surveillance that dogged King’s activism, fueled by the racist and red-baiting paranoia of J. Edgar Hoover, reminding everyone that true American progress is always hard-won. Call 828-350-2051 for more info.

Mr. Poitier was a Bahamian American actor, film director, and diplomat. Born in 1927 in Miami, he was the
first Black actor and first Bahamian to win the Academy Award for Best Actor (1963). He grew up in the
Bahamas, but moved to Miami at age 15, and to New York City when he was 16. He received two
competitive Golden Globe Awards, a competitive British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA), and
a Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album.
Poitier was one of the last major stars from the Golden Age of Hollywood cinema. He joined the American
Negro Theatre, landing his breakthrough film role as a high school student in the film Blackboard
Jungle (1955). In 1958, Poitier starred with Tony Curtis as chained-together escaped convicts in The Defiant
Ones, which received nine Academy Award nominations; both actors received nominations for Best Actor, with
Poitier's being the first for a Black actor. They both also had Best Actor nominations for the BAFTAs, with
Poitier winning.
In 1964, he won the Academy Award and the Golden Globe for Best Actor for Lilies of the Field (1963),
playing a handyman helping a group of German-speaking nuns build a chapel. Poitier also received acclaim
for Porgy and Bess (1959), A Raisin in the Sun (1961), and A Patch of Blue (1965). He continued to break
ground in three successful 1967 films which dealt with issues of race and race relations: To Sir, with
Love; Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, and In the Heat of the Night, the latter of which won the Academy
Award for Best Picture for that year.
He received Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations for his performance in the last film, and in a poll the next
year he was voted the US's top box-office star. Beginning in the 1970s, Poitier also directed various comedy
films, including Stir Crazy (1980), starring Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder, among other films. After nearly a
decade away from acting, he returned to television and film starring in Shoot to Kill (1988)
and Sneakers (1992).

Cry, the Beloved Country won the 1952 David O. Selznick Golden Laurel Award for its contribution to

California, Lawson was charged with Contempt of Congress and spent time at the Federal Prison in Ashland,
Kentucky.
His storied career continued off the stage, serving as a Bahamian Ambassador to Japan. Sir Sidney he was

Film: First Language
Feb 20 @ 2:30 pm – 3:30 pm
Asheville Art Museum

Free for Members or included with Museum admission

The Cherokee language was spoken in North America thousands of years before the arrival of Europeans and is still used today by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in the mountains of North Carolina. However, this fascinating language is now endangered, with the final generation to learn the language in the home now reaching middle age and the number of native speakers dwindling. In addition to long-standing efforts by the tribal schools and a summer language camp, a total immersion preschool and elementary school offers fresh hope that the Cherokee people may retain this vital component of their history and heritage. This Emmy award-winning film documents the extraordinary fight to rescue the very heart of Cherokee identity.

In English and Cherokee with English subtitles. Presented in conjunction with A Living Language: Cherokee Syllabary and Contemporary Art.
