Asheville on Bikes, the Blue Ridge Bicycle Club, and more have worked with representatives of the City of Asheville for almost 10 years to find out how many people are walking and bicycling in various locations around the city. You can help!
This year, in coordination with the National Bicycle and Pedestrian Documentation Project, we will count non-motorized users of our streets at a number of specific sites from 5-7 p.m. on one of the following dates:
*Tuesday, September 10th, OR
*Wednesday, September 11th, OR
*Thursday, September 12th.
There are also a few sites available from 7-9 a.m. on those days, and a few sites that are counted on Saturday, September 15th from 9-11 a.m. Volunteer hours are extremely valuable in this effort. A short training is required, but no special skills are needed. Sign up at Bike/Ped Site Registration or if you have questions, email [email protected].

This urban scavenger hunt will take teams of four around the downtown area via a series of clues to sixteen different locations where they will be required to complete a task before receiving their next clue. Two volunteers will staff each secret location, checking teams in and out, throughout the day. Friday 9/6: Tinctures, Teas, and Oils for your Home Medicine Cabinet (9:30am to 4:30pm)
Homemade herbal remedies are accessible, safe, and easy. All cultures on earth use the plants around them for their medicinal properties. Whether you grow herbs, wild harvest them, or purchase them, there are many forms with which to use and preserve them. This is a crash course for new growers and processors interested in understanding how to use herbs in their everyday self care. Explore processing herbs into:
Teas: Made from an herbal infusion (adding hot/warm water) or a decoction (simmering in water) using all parts of the plant.
Tinctures: Herbal extracts produced by soaking herbs in alcohol, thus enhancing and preserving the medicinal properties.
Oils & Salves: Fresh or dried herbs are soaked in oil, infusing their properties, sometimes using heat to aid the process. From there the oils can be made into salves.
Learn about the qualities and benefits of the herbs, methods for preparing, the benefits of using fresh vs. dried herbs, assessing herbal quality when purchasing, supplies and tools, labeling tips, and how and when to use the preparations.

Forest Farming
Friday: Agroforestry & Silvopasture
Saturday: Forest Gardening
James Geoffrey Steen
Do you dream of a diverse and beautiful farm or yard filled with food-bearing plants?
Instead of fighting a landscape that quickly returns back to its natural forested state, learn to use tree crops and land practices that enhance productivity, beauty, and usefulness. Forest farming or ‘agroforestry’ is the art and science of putting plants together in ways that forge mutually beneficial relationships and create vibrant and resilient ecosystems.
As you prioritize these sustainable design systems, you’ll discover the extraordinary ecological and social implications such as: renewal and regeneration of soil, reduction of erosion, enhanced beauty and usefulness, sequestration of carbon, and mitigation of water issues. Each effect leads to climate resilience and further integration with natural designs.
In these two full-day workshops, learn everything you need to know about working with trees on your land, no matter the scale.
